If your Quest 2 controller is not working, first identify whether it has no power, will not pair, is losing tracking, or has a failed button or stick. Start with the battery and a headset restart; re-pair only the affected controller if it powers on but is not recognized. These steps avoid a factory reset unless there is a separate, serious headset software problem.
Identify what is failing
| What you see | Where to look first |
|---|---|
| No light, vibration, or response | AA battery, battery fit or contacts, or an internal power fault |
| Light or vibration, but the headset does not recognize the controller | Pairing or a temporary headset/controller software state |
| Controller appears but floats, disappears, or spins | Tracking conditions, an obstruction, an accessory, or damage to the tracking ring |
| Position tracking works but a button or trigger does not | Physical input, software, or a game-specific problem |
| Menus scroll or movement happens without touching the stick | Possible thumbstick drift or an input fault |
| Works in the Quest menu but not in one game | That game’s control mapping or application behavior |
| Works intermittently | Battery fit, weak battery, contacts, pairing, or hardware |
Check the battery and wake the controller
Quest 2 Touch controllers use user-replaceable AA batteries. Press a button to wake the controller. If it still does not respond, remove the battery and check its orientation against the markings, then install a fresh AA cell. A battery that works in another device can still fail under load. Rechargeable AA cells may also behave differently from alkaline cells; the available guidance does not establish that every rechargeable cell is incompatible.
Inspect the battery compartment for dirt, white or green corrosion, loose contacts, or deformation. Refit the cover firmly and temporarily remove any third-party grip or battery cover that might keep the cell from seating. Do not scrape aggressively or put liquid into the controller. The Quest 2 safety guide identifies the controller AA battery as user-replaceable; that does not mean the headset’s internal battery should be opened by the user (Meta Quest 2 Safety and Warranty Guide).
After replacing or reseating the battery, press a button and check for a light, vibration, or recognition in the headset. If there is still no response, do not spend time repeatedly trying to pair it: pairing cannot fix a failed power contact or internal hardware fault.

Restart the headset before changing the pairing
- Hold the headset’s power button and choose Restart, or choose Power off if Restart is not offered.
- If you powered it off, wait for shutdown to finish, then turn it back on.
- Test the affected controller from the Quest home interface.
A normal restart is a low-risk way to clear a temporary software state. It is not a factory reset and does not require erasing headset data.
Unpair and re-pair only the affected controller
If the controller powers on but is not recognized, use the Meta Horizon mobile app (older instructions may call it the Meta Quest or Oculus app). The app’s labels can vary by version, and it needs to be connected to the correct headset.
- Open the Meta Horizon app on your phone and select Devices.
- Select the paired Quest 2 headset, then open Controllers.
- Select the affected left or right controller and choose Unpair Controller.
- Remove the controller battery briefly, then reinstall it.
- In the app, start pairing for that controller and follow the prompts.
Common Quest 2 pairing instructions give these button combinations: hold Oculus/Meta + B on the right controller or Menu + Y on the left until the LED blinks. Button branding can differ. Pairing guidance is available from Lenovo and Asurion.
If pairing does not start, check that Bluetooth is enabled on the phone, keep the phone near the headset, and confirm the app is managing the correct headset. Restart the phone and headset if needed. Avoid repeatedly unpairing both controllers when only one is affected. The mobile app is especially useful when you cannot navigate the headset interface with the faulty controller.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPower-cycle a controller that remains stuck
If ordinary battery reseating has not helped, remove the affected controller’s battery and leave it out for at least several minutes. Meta community troubleshooting has suggested 15 minutes or more as a conservative interval. This is a power cycle that may clear a stuck state; it is not a guaranteed controller firmware reset or a documented factory reset.
- Unpair the controller in the app first if you can.
- Remove its battery and leave it out for at least several minutes; use 15 minutes if the shorter attempt did not help.
- Restart the headset.
- Insert a fresh battery and pair the affected controller again.
Meta community guidance discusses battery removal and re-pairing in its controller pairing troubleshooting thread and a related response.
Fix a controller that pairs but will not track properly
If the controller powers on and pairs but floats, disappears, or moves erratically, investigate optical tracking rather than repeating pairing steps.
- Use a well-lit room and test in a different room.
- Move mirrors, glass, glossy furniture, and other reflective surfaces out of the immediate environment where practical.
- Make sure the headset’s tracking cameras are clean and unobstructed.
- Remove controller covers, grips, straps, and other third-party accessories temporarily.
- Keep the controller visible to the headset when testing; prolonged obstruction behind your body can interrupt tracking.
- Inspect the tracking ring for cracks or visible damage.
Meta community troubleshooting calls out lighting and reflective surfaces; users have also reported that unsupported accessories can interfere with detection or tracking (community discussion). A cracked ring can impair position tracking even when buttons still work.
If buttons work but the virtual controller is in the wrong place, focus on tracking. If the virtual controller is visible and positioned correctly but its buttons do nothing, move to input troubleshooting instead.

Check Hand Tracking and Direct Touch if interaction keeps switching
If the headset seems to switch between hands and controllers, or the controller is not selected as the input method, temporarily turn off Hand Tracking and Direct Touch, then test again from the Quest home interface. A Meta support response in a community discussion suggests checking these settings (discussion). This is a situational check, not a fix for a controller with no power or a physically broken control.

Buttons or trigger
Test the control in the Quest home interface and in a second application. If it fails everywhere while tracking works, a physical switch, debris, liquid or impact damage, or an input fault is more likely than a pairing issue. If it fails only in one game, check that game’s controls or settings before treating the controller as defective.
Thumbstick drift or a direction that will not register
Drift can make menus scroll or an avatar move without touching the stick; a direction may also register weakly or inconsistently. Test in the system interface and check whether a relevant calibration option is available in your software. A community report describes a persistent left-stick directional input problem rather than a general tracking failure (report).

Do not assume that contact cleaner, compressed air, or opening the controller will fix drift. These methods can cause more damage, and the available evidence does not establish a reliable DIY repair. If the input fault persists across apps, seek support or repair advice.
Hard-reboot the headset if a normal restart is not enough
If the headset is frozen or the controller remains unrecognized after the normal restart and pairing steps, a hard reboot may clear a stuck headset state. Meta community guidance describes this button sequence:
- Hold the headset’s Power and Volume Down buttons together until the boot screen appears.
- Use the volume buttons to highlight the boot option and the power button to select it; confirm if prompted.
Boot-screen wording and menu behavior can vary by firmware. A hard reboot is different from a factory reset: it restarts the headset without the factory reset’s intended data erasure.
When to stop and contact Meta
Contact Meta Support if the affected controller remains unusable after the relevant battery, restart, and pairing checks, or if you find signs of physical damage. In particular, stop troubleshooting and seek assistance when:
- There is no light or vibration after trying a fresh battery and checking that it seats correctly.
- The controller will not enter pairing mode or repeatedly disconnects after pairing.
- The tracking ring is cracked, the controller has been dropped or crushed, or it has been exposed to liquid or overheating.
- You see battery corrosion or a button, trigger, or stick fails in every app.
- The headset has been factory-reset but still cannot recognize the controller.
Meta community support directs users to support when standard power and pairing steps fail (controller will not turn on). Use Meta’s official support portal to check options for your device and case. Warranty or replacement eligibility depends on the individual case.
A factory reset erases headset data and requires setup again. It is disproportionate as an early response to one controller failing, and the sources do not establish it as a guaranteed controller fix. Do not open the headset or controller or attempt an invasive repair before checking support options.
