Passthrough on Oculus Quest 2 (now branded Meta Quest 2) is a processed, live camera view of your surroundings shown inside the headset. It lets you check the room, find a controller, see someone nearby, set up Guardian, or use compatible mixed-reality apps without taking the headset off. Quest 2 normally shows this view in black and white or grayscale—not as a full-color, transparent-lens view.
What Passthrough means
The Quest 2’s external cameras capture the room, the headset processes that feed, and its internal screens display the result. You are not looking through transparent lenses, so the image can have latency, distortion, softness and reduced detail. Meta’s safety guidance warns that the camera view may not accurately represent the physical environment (Meta safety guide).
On Quest 2, expect a grainy grayscale image. Furniture, people, pets and controllers are usually easy enough to locate, but small text, precise distances and details in a dark room may be difficult to see. This is different from the newer color Passthrough experience on Quest 3 and Quest 3S.
How to turn on Passthrough
- Put on the headset and press the Meta/Oculus button on the right controller if the system menu is not visible.
- Open Quick Settings or Settings.
- Find Passthrough Shortcut, Passthrough, or a similarly named physical-space setting.
- Enable the option for the headset’s double-tap shortcut.
- Tap either side of the headset twice to switch between VR and Passthrough. Tap twice again to return to VR.
Quest interface labels and locations can change with Horizon OS updates. If the wording differs, search Settings for “Passthrough.”

Why Passthrough may appear automatically
Quest can switch to Passthrough when you approach or cross the Guardian boundary, when tracking becomes unreliable, while you draw or redraw a play area, or when a supported app requests a mixed-reality mode. This is not necessarily a fault. Return inside the boundary or redraw it if the play space is inaccurate.

Quest 2 supports some Passthrough-based mixed-reality apps, but support is app-specific. It does not have the color, environmental understanding or newer camera capabilities of Quest 3/3S. Meta’s current Passthrough Camera API documentation lists Quest 3 and Quest 3S—not Quest 2—as prerequisites (Meta developer documentation).

What Passthrough is useful for
- Finding controllers or a nearby object.
- Checking the room or seeing who is speaking to you.
- Orienting yourself briefly without removing the headset.
- Setting up Guardian.
- Using compatible mixed-reality experiences.
It may help you locate a phone or identify a bright screen, but Quest 2 Passthrough is generally uncomfortable and unreliable for reading small text. Remove the headset for normal texting, computer work or accurate reading.
Is Passthrough safe?
Use it for a quick orientation check—not as a replacement for direct eyesight. Camera delay and distortion can make distances, motion, lighting and object positions misleading. Remove the headset before walking through an unfamiliar area, using stairs, crossing a road, driving or cycling, cooking, handling hot or sharp objects, or doing any safety-critical task. Keep the play area clear and rely on Guardian as well as Passthrough (Meta safety and warranty guide).

Why Passthrough is dark, black or blurry
- Improve lighting. Turn on room lights and avoid very dim or uneven colored lighting.
- Clean the cameras. Gently wipe the external camera areas with a dry microfiber cloth; do not spray liquid on the headset.
- Remove obstructions. Check for stickers, dust or accessories covering the camera area.
- Restart the headset. Hold the power button, choose Restart, and test Passthrough again.
- Redraw Guardian. Move to a clear, recognizable area and create the boundary again.
- Install available updates. If the problem began after an update, restart first and consult Meta support before considering a factory reset.
- Test outside the app. If Passthrough remains black and tracking also fails, contact Meta support.
A black view does not by itself prove that the cameras are broken; lighting, tracking state and software can all contribute. Meta community troubleshooting has likewise recommended restarting for Quest 2 black-Passthrough reports (community support thread).
Why does it turn on by itself?
Common causes include crossing Guardian, temporary tracking loss, accidentally triggering the double-tap gesture, a headset shift or resume event, or an app requesting Passthrough. Improve lighting, clean the cameras, recenter, verify the boundary and restart if it keeps happening. To stop accidental activation, disable the double-tap Passthrough shortcut in Settings.
Does Passthrough record your room?
Displaying Passthrough locally is different from casting, recording, taking screenshots or granting an app camera access. Passthrough does not automatically mean your room is publicly broadcast, but recordings and app permissions create separate privacy concerns. Review permissions and avoid exposing other people or sensitive spaces. Meta’s camera-data privacy requirements apply specifically to its newer Quest 3/3S camera API documentation, not as proof that Quest 2 has that API.

Should you upgrade for better Passthrough?
Stay with Quest 2 if grayscale room awareness and your existing VR library are enough. Consider Quest 3S for a newer entry-level headset with color mixed reality, or Quest 3 for the more capable overall mixed-reality system. No strap, facial interface or lens accessory can convert Quest 2’s camera system to color.

Passthrough is not Link, Air Link or casting
Passthrough shows the room inside the headset. Link/Air Link connects the headset to a PC for PC VR. Casting sends the headset’s view to another screen. They solve different problems.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use Passthrough in every Quest 2 game?
No. Basic system Passthrough is available independently, but mixed-reality support depends on each app.
Can I make Quest 2 Passthrough color?
No setting or accessory can turn Quest 2’s normal grayscale camera view into Quest 3-level color Passthrough.

How do I turn off double-tap Passthrough?
