OhSnap’s MCON is now a real retail product, not just a crowdfunding prototype. It is a compact magnetic controller that closes for transport, slides open into a conventional gamepad layout, and supports phones, computers, Nintendo Switch control modes, cloud gaming, remote play and emulators. Its strongest achievement is portability; its main compromises are long-session comfort, phone-fit variables, accessory costs and the fact that it cannot charge the phone.
That makes “start a new mobile era of gaming” useful as launch language, but not an established market result. The evidence supports an unusually portable premium controller—not proof that it has transformed mobile gaming.
What launched, and when?
OhSnap launched the MCON commercially on January 27, 2026, after a Kickstarter campaign that ran from January 2 to February 11, 2025. The campaign set a $25,000 goal and reported $1,603,871 from 15,374 backers—6,415% of its target. Campaign-tracking data lists an average pledge of about $104. Those are company-reported reach figures, not independent evidence of market share or long-term adoption. As of August 18, 2026, the MCON is purchasable through OhSnap.

What the MCON actually is
The MCON is a phone controller built around MagSafe-style magnetic attachment. A compatible iPhone or case attaches directly; OhSnap says an adapter is included for Android phones and ordinary cases. The phone remains the display and computing platform, so this is not a standalone handheld console.
Its defining mechanism lets the controller close into a compact form and deploy its controls when you are ready to play. The folded shell is intended to protect the joysticks and buttons from accidental presses in a bag or pocket. Pulling it open reveals grips, analog sticks, face buttons, a directional pad, shoulder buttons and triggers in a familiar gamepad arrangement.
Features that distinguish the design
- Magnetic attachment: MagSafe and PixelSnap phones and cases can attach directly; other Android phones and cases use the supplied adapter.
- Locking grips: OhSnap says the grips lock open to reduce hand strain compared with holding the compact body closed.
- Kickback Mode: You can remove the phone from the controller shell and prop it up for tabletop play.
- Adjustable magnetic puck: The puck is designed to accommodate different phone sizes and can be flipped for portrait-oriented games.
- Multi-connect: Up to three devices can be paired, with switching performed by double-tapping the pairing button.
- Motion input: A built-in gyroscope supports tilt-to-aim, driving and flying-game controls.
These design and compatibility details come from OhSnap’s MCON product page. Terms such as “world’s most compact,” “console-grade” and “anti-stick-drift” remain promotional claims rather than independently established findings.

Polling rate is not the same as total input latency. In cloud gaming and remote play, the internet connection, game server and display can contribute more delay than the controller link.

How it connects
Bluetooth
Bluetooth is the simplest option for ordinary mobile play. The correct mode still depends on what the game expects: X-Input, DirectInput, DualShock-style or Switch-style controls are not universally interchangeable.
USB-C wired play
USB-C operation is listed for iOS, Android, Windows and Mac, with a published 1,000 Hz polling rate. Wired mode avoids a separate wireless link, but game and operating-system support can still vary.

2.4 GHz with accessories
The MCON can use 2.4 GHz through the MCON Dock or Key Cast, with a published 250–1,000 Hz polling range. OhSnap positions this path for lower-latency or larger-screen setups, but the polling number alone does not guarantee a lower end-to-end delay.
Phone and platform compatibility in practice
iPhone, MagSafe and PixelSnap
MagSafe-compatible iPhones and cases attach directly. OhSnap also lists PixelSnap phones and cases. The adjustable puck is intended to help with different phone sizes, and the product page says Plus- and Max-size phones, foldables and flip phones are supported.
Android and cases
Android compatibility is broader in principle because the included adapter can add a magnetic mounting point, but it is not a promise that every model and case will fit equally well. Check the phone’s width, thickness, camera island, hinge clearance and case construction before buying. Thick cases and unusually large camera modules can affect alignment and stability.

Games and operating systems
OhSnap lists iOS, Android, Windows and Mac for wired use, plus Nintendo Switch control modes wirelessly. The controller is intended for controller-enabled native games, emulators, Steam Link, PlayStation Remote Play, GeForce Now and Xbox services. A platform being compatible does not mean every game on it accepts a controller, and iOS and Android titles can differ in button mapping and native support. OhSnap says Mac users may get the best experience with Key Cast.

Portability is the MCON’s clearest advantage. It folds into a smaller package than a conventional full-size gamepad and protects its controls while carried. An Android Central hands-on highlighted that pocketability while finding the larger GameSir Galileo G8 more comfortable.
Compactness does not automatically mean comfort. Seller-hosted customer reviews include positive comments about carrying the MCON, alongside a report that it can feel small for larger hands and become uncomfortable during prolonged streaming sessions. Those are individual user reports, not controlled ergonomic testing; the practical trade-off is clear enough: the MCON favors transport over the broad grips of a larger controller.
Kickback Mode, TV play and accessories
Kickback Mode
Removing the phone from the controller shell lets the MCON prop it up for tabletop gaming. This is useful when you want the controls in your hands but do not want to hold the phone itself.
Key Cast
Key Cast is an accessory for sending the phone’s picture to an HDMI display and enabling the MCON’s 2.4 GHz connection path. It matters mainly for monitor or TV play and for users following OhSnap’s recommended Mac configuration.

MCON Dock
The Dock is intended to create a more console-like, docked arrangement. It is unnecessary if you only play directly on the phone, but relevant if the phone is becoming a living-room gaming source.
Travel Sleeve and charging items
The soft-shell Travel Sleeve protects the controller when it is carried separately. OhSnap’s bundle options also include a 35 W wall adapter, USB-C cable and HDMI cable; these are convenience items rather than requirements for basic Bluetooth play.

What the launch history tells you—and what it does not
OhSnap says the concept began when Josh King made a 3D-printed pocket controller inspired by handheld systems such as the Nintendo DS and Game Boy. The company says development stalled as costs rose, then resumed with OhSnap. That is a company-provided origin story rather than independently documented development history.

The Kickstarter totals show strong early interest. They do not establish mass-market adoption, long-term reliability or universal customer satisfaction. There are also anecdotal Reddit reports of uneven or delayed Kickstarter fulfillment, including claims that some retail buyers received units while backers were still waiting. Retail availability on August 18, 2026 is a separate fact from historical backer experiences.

Relevant alternatives include the Backbone One, GameSir Galileo G8 and Razer Kishi V2. Their current prices were not established here, so the meaningful comparison is format and use case rather than an unverified price ranking.
Limitations to check before buying
- Ergonomics: Larger hands and multi-hour sessions may favor a larger controller.
- Phone fit: Verify width, thickness, camera clearance, hinge design and case compatibility.
- Charging: The MCON can be charged by the phone through USB-C, but it cannot charge the phone. Cloud and remote-play users may need a separate charger or power bank.
- Battery: “Up to 9 hours” and “up to 1.8 years” are manufacturer estimates that vary with connection mode, polling, gyroscope use, temperature and battery age.
- Game support: Controller compatibility remains game-specific, especially on mobile.
- Total cost: Magnetic adapters, a sleeve, Key Cast, Dock and replacement cases can add to the controller’s displayed price.
- Review context: OhSnap’s product page displays a 4.8-star customer rating, but seller-hosted reviews are not equivalent to independent testing.
Who should buy the MCON?
It makes sense if you value
- A controller that can travel separately from the phone without the bulk of a full-size pad.
- Magnetic attachment instead of a clamp around the handset.
- Cloud gaming, remote play, emulation or controller-enabled mobile games.
- Switching among up to three devices.
- Tabletop play and optional HDMI-display use.
Choose another format if you need
- The most comfortable grip for several consecutive hours.
- Built-in phone charging.
- The lowest-cost route to basic mobile controls.
- Confidence that an unusually wide phone, thick case or large camera island will fit without confirmation.
- A more mature, widely established accessory ecosystem.
Verdict
The MCON is a compelling premium travel controller and an interesting design experiment. Its folding magnetic body addresses transportability better than most conventional mobile pads, while Kickback Mode, multi-device pairing and optional 2.4 GHz and HDMI accessories broaden its uses. The price, smaller ergonomics, Android fit variables and lack of phone charging prevent it from being a universal recommendation.

Buy it for portability and magnetic convenience; skip it for maximum comfort, minimum cost or a built-in power solution. “A new mobile era” remains promotional framing—the defensible achievement is making serious mobile controls unusually easy to carry.
