The Grand Exchange can now accept offers worth more than the old 2,147,483,647 GP “max cash” value. Since Jagex’s 30 September 2026 update, offers can use coins and platinum tokens together, up to an approximate combined ceiling of 2.149 trillion GP. But individual stacks remain capped, buy limits still apply, and eligible sales are still taxed.
Does the Grand Exchange still have a max cash limit?
The old 2,147,483,647 GP figure is no longer the maximum value of a GE offer. Jagex’s 30 September 2026 “GE Improvements: Beyond Max Cash” update allows an offer to use coins and platinum tokens together. Jagex describes the combined-currency ceiling as about 2.149 trillion GP: 2.147 billion coins plus 2.147 billion platinum tokens.
That change affects the value an offer can represent, not the size of a single item stack. Each stack, including a stack of coins, remains capped at 2,147,483,647. When a high-value offer completes, the GE uses the necessary combination of coins and platinum tokens; it may return coins as change if tokens were used.
Known platinum-token issue
Jagex’s update lists a known issue in which GE transactions can convert platinum tokens to GP. Its temporary workaround is to carry the exact purchase amount in coins in your inventory. Jagex also notes that coins can sometimes appear as an unnecessary placeholder in the bank; right-click the placeholder and select “Release” to remove it. These are update-specific known issues, not permanent requirements for every trade.

How GE tax works
Jagex confirms that tax still applies to eligible high-value GE sales and remains capped at 5 million coins per item. The Old School RuneScape Wiki’s Grand Exchange reference, accessed 3 October 2026, describes the general rate as 2% of the sale price, rounded down per item. It also lists exemptions, including bonds and certain low-value or early-game items, so not every sale is taxed.
The 5 million-coin cap limits the tax on an individual item even when its sale price is very high. Check the amount shown on the live offer interface for a specific item, since eligibility and exemptions matter.

What the GE buy limit restricts
The 2026 high-value change did not remove purchase limits. Jagex says existing trade restrictions, including buy limits, remain unchanged. The Wiki describes buy limits as item-specific quantities that apply over a four-hour period. The timer starts when you successfully buy the first item covered by that limit.
Some related items share a limit, so buying one version can reduce the remaining allowance for another. There is no universal quantity for every item, and limits can change. Use the item’s current GE interface to see its limit and your remaining allowance.

These are purchase limits, not a general restriction on selling: the Wiki says there are no restrictions on selling items.
Why an item or account may be blocked from the GE
A buy limit is only one reason an offer may fail. Check these separate questions:
Rank #4
- Is the item tradeable? Untradeable items cannot be exchanged through the GE or ordinary player trade.
- Is it eligible for the GE? Some items can be traded directly between players but are excluded from GE trading. The Wiki gives partially charged items and certain minigame supplies as examples.
- Can this account use the GE for it? The Wiki documents limited GE access for Ironman accounts and restrictions affecting new free-to-play accounts. Account rules and specific restrictions may change, so check the account’s current interface or official guidance.
- Has the buy limit been reached? If the item and account are eligible, a successful purchase may still be blocked until the applicable allowance refreshes.
- Has your offer matched? An offer that has not found a matching buyer or seller may remain unfilled; that does not by itself mean the item is restricted.
Guide prices are references, not guaranteed trade prices
Jagex’s September 2026 update made guide prices more responsive: the maximum guide-price movement per update rose from 5% to 20%, updates became three-hourly instead of every 24 hours, and low-volume items also receive updates. A guide price is still a reference, not a promise that an offer will fill at that price. Set a limit price with current supply and demand in mind.
