To get crude oil in Once Human, place a Water Pump in an oil-field region and select crude oil from the pump’s available outputs. Blackfell Oil Fields in Red Sands is one documented example, but check your scenario’s map and the pump’s own output list before building. You can then collect Barreled Crude Oil or route it to a Refining Facility to make Portable Mixed Fuel.
Where to find crude oil
Crude oil is produced by a Water Pump in a region where oil is available. Blackfell Oil Fields in Red Sands is a documented location; a community guide gives an example near coordinates (5116, -1280). Treat that as a place to check, not a universal coordinate: use the current interactive map for your scenario. Its Blackfell Oil Fields page covers Manibus and Evolution’s Call and was last updated October 6, 2026.
How to extract crude oil
- Open the map for your current scenario and locate an oil-field region, such as Blackfell Oil Fields in Red Sands. Check the map’s scenario coverage before travelling.
- Place a Water Pump in the region, then inspect the outputs shown in its interface. Select crude oil if it is available. Official Version 1.5.1 notes say pump outputs depend on resources in the current region, but do not specify that a pump must sit on a visible oil patch. Use the in-game output list to confirm the location works.
- Collect the resulting Barreled Crude Oil, or connect the pump to a Refining Facility and a Water Tank. The official update notes confirm these connections and that Water Tanks can automatically store Barreled Crude Oil.
The output system and connections were described in the official Version 1.5.1 update notes, published April 22, 2025. Because regions and scenarios may differ, the pump interface is the practical check that crude oil is available where you build.
How to turn crude oil into fuel
Use a Refining Facility to convert Barreled Crude Oil into Portable Mixed Fuel. The facility’s current conversion list is the authority for your game version; community-maintained recipe figures can change between updates.

The Once Human Wiki (Fandom community; publication year not stated) reports that a small refinery uses 10 watts and converts 10 Barreled Crude Oil into 5 Portable Mixed Fuel per hour. Verify the recipe and rate in the facility UI.
Large Refinery
The same community reference reports a large refinery conversion of 10 Barreled Crude Oil into 5 Portable Mixed Fuel in 15 minutes, at 15 watts. It also says the Large Refinery Facility requires the Large Refinery Facility Memetic Specialization. These are community-reported, patch-sensitive details rather than values confirmed by the official update notes; check the current unlock and conversion UI before planning your setup.
