One Million Checkboxes was a browser game built around one shared board of a million boxes: anyone could check or uncheck a box, and the change appeared for everyone. That simple rule turned a quiet clicking task into a tug-of-war—and made “check them all” a moving target.
How One Million Checkboxes worked
There was no character to control or conventional level to complete. Players clicked or tapped boxes to toggle them. Each box had a shared state, so a check you made could be undone by someone else, while other players could change boxes you had not touched. The board was a collective space, not a personal checklist. Gizmodo’s June 28, 2024 report described the resulting effort to check every box as potentially endless.
Could players check them all?
They could try, but there was no lasting claim to a checked box. With many people changing the same million states, reaching a moment when every box was checked would not guarantee that the board stayed that way. The game’s central contest was as much about changing other players’ work as completing the board.
Why the simple game became a technical challenge
Creator Nolen Royalty says he launched the game on June 26, 2024, after building it in two days. He reports that tens of thousands of users arrived within hours, and that the site crashed repeatedly as activity grew. Those audience and performance figures come from Royalty’s own account, not an independent measurement. His technical retrospective explains why a tiny action could create substantial work for a live shared service.

A million states, updated for everyone
Royalty represented the board as a bitset: one bit for each of the million checkbox states. The client rendered only the boxes on screen, plus a buffer, rather than drawing the entire board at once. On the server, nginx and Flask workers worked with Redis for state and messaging; updates were broadcast to connected clients. The visual interaction stayed simple, but keeping a shared board synchronized as users clicked required infrastructure to receive and distribute those changes.
What happened to the game?
Royalty says he sunset the original shared experience two weeks after launch, after it had received more than 650 million check and uncheck actions. That is his reported action total, not an independently audited count—and it measures toggles, not unique players or boxes left checked at one time. The official site, onemillioncheckboxes.com, returned no readable page content when checked on October 8, 2026. That does not establish whether it is currently playable or permanently unavailable.

A tiny game with a collaborative idea
Royalty wrote that he “optimized for fun, not money” and said he turned down advertisers. He also described the project as a way to think about new collaborative experiences. Its appeal came from a recognizable social dynamic: everyone had the same minimal tools, but no one controlled the final result. Checking a box was easy; keeping the shared board in the state you wanted was another matter.
In Gizmodo’s June 28, 2024 coverage, Royalty put the project’s creative appeal this way: “This site was fun to make. It got me thinking about a new space of collaborative experiences that I want to explore.”
