Verdict: The OneXPlayer G1 is best viewed as a powerful miniature Windows computer that also happens to be a gaming handheld. The Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 / 32GB / 2TB version is the most convincing configuration for demanding games, while the Ryzen 7 8840U model makes sense only at a substantial discount. Its excellent 8.8-inch display, integrated controls, detachable keyboard and OCuLink port give it unusual flexibility, but the roughly 880g handheld body, small keyboard, limited battery and potentially loud cooling prevent it from being the best choice for pure handheld gaming or sustained laptop work.

What is the OneXPlayer G1?

The OneXPlayer G1 combines three devices in one Windows 11 computer:

  1. Clamshell mode: attach the magnetic physical keyboard and use the G1 like a very small laptop.
  2. Handheld mode: remove the keyboard to expose the integrated gamepad controls.
  3. Tablet or desktop mode: detach the keyboard and use it wirelessly over Bluetooth while positioning the G1 as a small Windows tablet or desktop computer.

This is more than a conventional handheld with a keyboard accessory. The keyboard is part of the device’s physical design: when attached, it covers the controls. The keyboard connects through magnetic pogo pins or Bluetooth, has RGB backlighting, supports up to three Bluetooth profiles according to independent testing, and includes a quoted 60-hour battery from its 350mAh cell.

The concept is clever, but it also creates the G1’s central trade-off: every mode is useful, yet none is as comfortable as a device designed exclusively for that job.

Design and portability: compact, but heavy for a handheld

The G1 has a small footprint for a Windows PC, but “compact” needs context. At approximately 208×146.5×32mm and 880g without the keyboard, it is much closer to a small laptop computer than a lightweight handheld. Carrying the complete system brings the weight to roughly 1kg.

That extra mass is noticeable during conventional trigger-grip play. A hands-on report found the controls familiar and usable, while also noting that the weight can cause fatigue over longer sessions. Rear grip cutouts help, but they do not change the physics of holding nearly 900g in front of you.

The detachable keyboard adds about 140g, so it makes the travel package more useful while making the handheld package less minimal. The G1 works well in a bag, especially for someone who wants one computer for games and occasional desktop tasks. It is less appealing if the priority is lounging with a light device for several hours.

Display: one of the G1’s strongest features

The 8.8-inch 2560×1600 16:10 touchscreen is sharp, spacious and well suited to Windows applications. Its quoted 500 cd/m² typical brightness, 1500:1 contrast and 97% typical DCI-P3 coverage make it a notably capable screen for a handheld PC. Ten-point touch is also useful when navigating Windows without the keyboard.

The 144Hz maximum refresh rate is a useful option rather than a guarantee of 144-frame-per-second gaming. Integrated Radeon graphics will not sustain that performance in demanding games at the native 2560×1600 resolution. Older or well-optimized games may benefit from the extra refresh headroom, but modern AAA titles generally need reduced settings, lower resolution or upscaling.

For most demanding games, 1080p or approximately 1200p is the more sensible target. Tests and hands-on reports found modern games playable with mixed or medium settings and upscaling, but native-resolution gaming should not be assumed. Windows scaling also matters: the high pixel density looks excellent, although some older desktop applications and game interfaces may use text that is too small or poorly scaled.

The 16:10 ratio provides useful vertical space for desktop work. Whether 144Hz, touch accuracy, outdoor legibility, response time, backlight uniformity and variable refresh are satisfactory depends on the specific review unit and setting; those details should not be inferred solely from the headline specifications.

Controls and handheld ergonomics

The G1 includes Hall-effect joysticks and triggers, shoulder buttons, a D-pad, vibration and a gyroscope. The quoted trigger travel is approximately 6.35mm. Hall-effect components should reduce the conventional wear mechanism associated with some potentiometer controls, but they do not automatically guarantee ideal calibration or dead zones.

In use, the layout is conventional and immediately understandable. That makes the keyboard-removal transformation practical rather than gimmicky. The important limitation is comfort: the controls are usable, but the thick, heavy body can become tiring in a normal handheld posture. Heat around the hands can also vary with the selected TDP and fan profile.

The G1 is therefore better suited to shorter sessions, supported play from a lap or desk, and users who value its computer functions enough to accept the weight. Buyers choosing it primarily for gaming should compare its grip comfort with a conventional Windows handheld before paying for the additional keyboard hardware.

Is the detachable keyboard actually useful?

Yes—but mainly as a travel and emergency input device, not as a full laptop keyboard.

The physical keyboard is substantially more useful than the underside touch surface. It is suitable for browser searches, short messages, game shortcuts and modest notes. Independent testing found that the small keys and the G1’s thickness make sustained typing less natural than on a conventional laptop. On a desk it can perform the job; on a lap, the device’s corners and unusual hand position make it awkward.

The built-in touch keyboard is a fallback. It changes between keyboard and trackpad modes, and both functions cannot be used simultaneously. That makes it acceptable for short inputs but frustrating for ordinary desktop navigation. It is not a substitute for a physical keyboard and mouse when working for extended periods.

For a long email, the detachable keyboard is possible but not pleasant. Coding, spreadsheets, long documents and regular video-call productivity are better handled by a conventional ultraportable laptop. The Bluetooth connection adds flexibility because the keyboard can be used separately, but it also introduces another battery, pairing state and potential reconnection issue. The keyboard reportedly sleeps after five minutes of inactivity and wakes when a key is pressed.

Performance: the processor variant matters

There is no single “OneXPlayer G1” performance profile. The Ryzen 7 8840U, Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 and Intel Core Ultra 7 255H versions use materially different integrated graphics.

Ryzen AI 9 HX 370: the gaming choice

The HX 370 combines 12 cores and 24 threads with Radeon 890M integrated graphics. Comparative testing found it generally strongest for actual gaming workloads, particularly against the 8840U and Intel variants. It is the configuration to choose when the G1 will be used for modern PC games rather than mainly browsing, emulation or office work.

Ryzen 7 8840U: adequate at the right price

The 8840U uses Radeon 780M graphics. It remains suitable for general Windows use, older games, many indie titles and reduced-settings gaming, but it is a meaningfully weaker graphics tier than the HX 370. It should not be selected simply because the model name says G1. It becomes attractive when the discount is large enough to justify the performance trade-off.

Intel Core Ultra 7 255H: inconsistent gaming value

The Intel version uses Intel Arc graphics and can lead in some CPU-oriented or synthetic tests. However, the cited gaming comparisons favored the AMD models in Forza Horizon 5, while the HX 370 led across much of the Cyberpunk 2077 testing. The Intel model is not automatically slower in every workload, but its gaming position is less straightforward than the HX 370’s.

Testing covered 1080p and 720p at TDP levels from 28W down to 5W. That range matters because a handheld’s performance depends heavily on power limits, cooling, firmware and fan behavior—not only on the processor name.

Real-world gaming

The HX 370 G1 is powerful for integrated graphics, but it remains an integrated-graphics handheld. It is not a replacement for a gaming laptop with a discrete GPU.

  • Older and optimized games: 1600p may be viable, particularly when the game is not GPU-heavy.
  • Most modern AAA games: 1080p or 1200p, medium or low settings and upscaling are the realistic starting point.
  • Very demanding games: expect visual compromises, frame-rate dips or game streaming.
  • Competitive games: the 144Hz panel can help responsiveness, but the integrated GPU may not sustain high frame rates at native resolution.

Comparative reviews found AMD models ahead of the Intel version in Forza Horizon 5, with the HX 370 strongest in Cyberpunk 2077 across much of the tested range. A Japanese hands-on test described Forza Horizon 5 as smooth with reduced settings and Monster Hunter Wilds as playable, although some scenes suffered frame-rate drops. Another review reported around 60fps targets in Clair Obscur, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3+4, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered and Atomfall at roughly 1200p with FSR Balanced and mixed or medium settings.

Those results are game- and configuration-specific, not a universal promise. Settings, patches, drivers, TDP, thermals and the chosen upscaler can change the experience substantially. Low-power modes can also produce poor frame-time consistency if the limit is set too aggressively.

Battery life: capacity is the compromise

The G1’s battery is approximately 51.975Wh, or 13,500mAh. That is modest for a high-performance Windows computer driving an 8.8-inch high-resolution, high-refresh display.

A controlled Cinebench loop at 28W TDP and full brightness produced approximately:

Configuration Result
Ryzen 7 8840U About 69 minutes
Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 About 75 minutes
Intel Core Ultra 7 255H About 81 minutes

This is a demanding productivity loop, not a universal gaming-runtime figure. A separate hands-on estimate suggested approximately 2.5–3.5 hours under load and more than six hours for lighter use, but the conditions were different. Both sets of figures can be useful only when their test methods are kept separate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Expect the shortest runtime during high-TDP AAA gaming. Lower-power indie or retro games, 60Hz operation, reduced brightness, lower resolution and game streaming can extend endurance. Office work and video playback should last longer than demanding local rendering, but “all-day battery” is not supported by the available high-load testing.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Thermals and fan noise

One independent review measured approximately 68°C maximum temperature and up to 67dB of fan noise under its test conditions. The 67dB figure should be understood as a demanding-test maximum, not an unavoidable noise level in every game.

Actual behavior depends on TDP, fan profile, ambient temperature, workload, BIOS and firmware, OneXConsole version, boost behavior and whether the G1 is held or resting on a desk. Lowering TDP can improve battery life, noise and hand comfort, but setting it too low may cause stutter and poor frame-time consistency.

Ports and eGPU potential

The G1 has an OCuLink port, two USB4 Type-C ports, USB-A, microSD and a 3.5mm audio jack. OCuLink is particularly relevant for an external GPU because it can offer a higher-bandwidth connection than ordinary USB4 implementations.

An eGPU setup requires an OCuLink-compatible enclosure or dock, a compatible graphics card, an adequate power supply, drivers and usually a monitor. Performance varies with the GPU, enclosure, cable and connection path, so it is not responsible to promise a fixed performance uplift. An external monitor may also avoid some of the overhead involved in sending rendered frames back to the G1’s internal screen.

The official store promotes compatibility with the ONEXGPU 2, but an eGPU changes the product’s role. It adds considerable cost, requires desk-based power and makes the most sense as a home setup rather than a portable upgrade. OCuLink can be faster, but it is less convenient than a simple one-cable dock in some desktop arrangements.

Windows 11 and day-to-day use

Windows 11 gives the G1 its broad software compatibility and makes the keyboard concept meaningful. It also brings the friction of a desktop operating system to an 8.8-inch touchscreen.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Expect to manage small touch targets, desktop scaling, overlapping game launchers, controller mappings, on-screen keyboard behavior, Windows updates and driver updates. OneXConsole is important for selecting TDP and fan behavior, although exact menu labels can change with software versions. Sleep and wake, external displays, controller software and anti-cheat compatibility should be treated as part of the handheld experience rather than assumed to work like a dedicated console.

For users comfortable with Windows, this flexibility is a major advantage. For someone seeking a console-like interface with minimal setup, a Steam Deck-class device or a simpler conventional handheld may be more satisfying.

Configurations and value

Captured Japanese launch pricing was ¥163,000 for the 8840U/32GB/1TB version, ¥208,000 for HX 370/32GB/1TB, ¥228,000 for HX 370/32GB/2TB and ¥268,000 for HX 370/64GB/4TB. These are historical Japanese domestic prices, not current US pricing.

The official international store has displayed a promotional $930 price for at least an 8840U/32GB/1TB bundle, but the page contains multiple configurations and bundles. Check the exact cart price, shipping, taxes, warranty region, keyboard inclusion and return policy before ordering.

Configuration Who it suits Concern
Ryzen 7 8840U / 32GB / 1TB Moderate gaming, older titles and general Windows use Radeon 780M is considerably weaker than Radeon 890M
HX 370 / 32GB / 1TB Demanding gaming at the lowest HX 370 entry point 1TB can fill quickly with modern games
HX 370 / 32GB / 2TB Best overall balance for a substantial game library Higher purchase price
HX 370 / 64GB / 4TB Creative workloads, virtual machines, development or huge offline libraries Expensive and excessive for most gaming
Core Ultra 7 255H CPU-focused buyers who specifically prefer Intel Gaming results are less consistent against AMD

Best overall: Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 with 32GB and 2TB, assuming the price premium over 1TB is reasonable. Best value: the 8840U/32GB/1TB only when substantially discounted. Hardest to justify: 64GB/4TB for ordinary gaming.

Who should buy the OneXPlayer G1?

  • Buy it if you want one Windows device for gaming, browsing, occasional typing and desktop use; value the large high-resolution display; accept carrying roughly 1kg with the keyboard; and may add an OCuLink eGPU later.
  • Skip it if you primarily want the lightest handheld, long battery life, quiet operation, a full-size keyboard or a simple console experience.

Alternatives

A conventional Windows handheld is the better choice for buyers who prioritize lighter weight, comfortable controls and a straightforward gaming layout. It gives up the G1’s integrated clamshell keyboard.

A conventional ultraportable laptop is better for long-form typing, coding, spreadsheets, video calls and sustained multitasking. It may require a separate controller, but its keyboard, trackpad and desktop ergonomics will be superior.

A Steam Deck-class device remains the stronger fit for value and console simplicity, especially if the reader does not need Windows productivity applications.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The GPD WIN Mini 2025 is a relevant comparison for buyers who want a smaller clamshell Windows handheld using a similar HX 370 platform. It is more handheld-oriented and does not offer the G1’s same detachable-keyboard concept. The ONEXPLAYER F1 Pro and X1 Pro are also worth considering for different balances of comfort, performance and modularity, as discussed in independent comparative coverage.

Buying checklist

  • Confirm whether you are buying the 8840U, HX 370 or Intel 255H version.
