Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Ping and FPS are different measurements. Ping is the time your data takes to travel to the game server and back. FPS, or frames per second, is how quickly your device renders the game locally. High ping causes delayed online interactions, rubber-banding, and teleporting; low or unstable FPS causes choppy motion, stutter, and delayed visual feedback.
Neither metric automatically matters more. The right fix depends on whether the problem is in your network, your game hardware, your display and input chain, or the game server.
Ping vs. FPS at a glance
| Metric | What it measures | Typical symptoms | Common fixes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ping | Network round-trip time, measured in milliseconds | Delayed actions, rubber-banding, teleporting, inconsistent hit registration | Choose a closer server, reduce congestion, improve connection stability |
| FPS | How many frames your device renders per second | Choppy camera movement, stutter, delayed local visual feedback | Lower demanding settings, fix bottlenecks, improve cooling or hardware |
| System latency | Time from physical input to visible result | Controls feel sluggish despite good ping and FPS | Check display, synchronization, peripherals, render queue, and game settings |
The word lag is often used for all of these problems, but it is not a precise diagnosis. A game can have excellent ping and poor FPS, or high FPS and an unstable network.
What ping means in online games
Ping usually represents the round-trip time for data to travel from your device to the game server and back. It is measured in milliseconds (ms). A lower number generally means less network delay, but ping alone does not describe the entire quality of a connection.

As a practical rule of thumb, under 20 ms is excellent, 20–50 ms is very good, 50–80 ms is usually playable, and 80–120 ms may become noticeable in fast competitive games. Above 120 ms, timing-sensitive play becomes increasingly difficult. These are guidelines, not universal thresholds: server tick rate, netcode, server location, buffering, and the type of game all matter.
A stable 60 ms connection can feel better than one that alternates between 20 ms and 150 ms. That variation is called jitter. Microsoft’s game-streaming documentation treats changing network latency as a separate issue and uses statistical variation to describe jitter.
Packet loss is another important factor. Lost data can cause missing player updates, voice-chat interruptions, rubber-banding, temporary freezes, and actions that appear not to register. A high FPS counter cannot compensate for packet loss.
Server distance and internet routing also establish a practical limit. Selecting the nearest available region usually helps, but a faster internet package does not necessarily create a shorter route to a game server. Network providers, congestion, peering, and the game’s own infrastructure affect the path. Riot’s explanations of Riot Direct and VALORANT’s netcode illustrate why network latency interacts with server placement and game processing.

What FPS means
FPS is a rendering-throughput measurement: the number of frames your system produces each second. Higher FPS generally makes motion smoother and reduces the time between visual updates, but it is not the same thing as total input latency.
Frame time is the interval represented by each frame:

Frame time in milliseconds = 1,000 ÷ FPS
| FPS | Approximate frame time |
|---|---|
| 30 | 33.3 ms |
| 60 | 16.7 ms |
| 120 | 8.3 ms |
| 144 | 6.9 ms |
| 240 | 4.2 ms |
| 360 | 2.8 ms |
Those figures describe frame spacing only. They do not mean that a 240-FPS game has just 4.2 ms of total input lag. Input processing, game simulation, rendering queues, display scanout, pixel response, and the peripheral itself add further delay. NVIDIA distinguishes FPS, a rate, from system latency, a duration, in its Reflex documentation.
Frame pacing matters as much as average FPS
Average FPS can hide stutter. A game delivering 100 frames at evenly spaced intervals may feel smooth, while another game averaging 100 FPS but alternating between short and long frame times may feel uneven.
For troubleshooting, watch the frame-time graph and, where available, the 1% low FPS figure. Frequent frame-time spikes can result from shader compilation, CPU scheduling, asset streaming, thermal throttling, driver problems, memory pressure, or background software.
FPS and refresh rate are not the same
A monitor’s refresh rate, measured in hertz (Hz), indicates how often it can refresh the image. FPS indicates how often the game produces frames.
- Rendering 200 FPS on a 60 Hz monitor does not mean the monitor displays 200 complete refreshes per second.
- A high-refresh display makes higher FPS more useful when the system can sustain it.
- If FPS regularly falls below the monitor’s refresh rate, motion may appear less fluid.
- Variable refresh rate technologies such as G-SYNC and FreeSync can reduce tearing and improve consistency when supported by the display, GPU, and game.
V-Sync, frame caps, and VRR involve trade-offs. Disabling V-Sync can reduce latency in some configurations but may introduce tearing. VRR can improve smoothness, but the best configuration depends on the monitor, GPU, frame rate, game limiter, and driver. Treat settings advice as something to test rather than a universal rule.
How ping and FPS interact
Online games do not simply add ping and frame time to produce a definitive “lag” number. Multiplayer engines may use client-side prediction, interpolation, server reconciliation, input buffering, lag compensation, and separate client and server update rates.

Your client may render at 240 FPS while the server updates its simulation at a different frequency. A high-tick-rate server also cannot make a 30-FPS device render more frames. Conversely, a powerful GPU cannot remove the delay caused by a distant server or unstable route.
Riot’s VALORANT netcode analysis shows how network latency, client buffering, rendering delay, and frame rate can interact in a competitive shooter. The effect of a particular ping or FPS value therefore depends on the game’s design and version.
Recognize the problem from its symptoms
| What you notice | More likely cause | Check first |
|---|---|---|
| Players or your character teleport | Ping spikes, jitter, packet loss, or server problems | Network graph, packet loss, server region, server status |
| The camera moves unevenly | Low FPS, frame-time spikes, or display problems | FPS, frame time, 1% lows, refresh rate |
| The game looks smooth but online actions feel late | Network delay or broader system latency | Ping, jitter, input-to-display latency, display settings |
| The game freezes briefly but does not disconnect | Local stutter, shader compilation, asset streaming, or packet loss | Frame-time graph and network-loss indicator |
| Everyone freezes or disconnects | Server outage or network failure | Server status, packet loss, route quality |
| A cloud-streamed image feels delayed | Combined network, encoding, decoding, display, or input latency | The complete streaming path |
A practical troubleshooting workflow
1. Test whether the problem is local or online
Try an offline section, single-player mode, practice range, or local benchmark. If the game is already choppy offline, begin with FPS, frame pacing, drivers, temperatures, and hardware. If offline play is smooth but multiplayer produces delayed actions or teleporting, investigate the network, server region, packet loss, and game server.
2. Turn on the game’s performance overlay
Use the game’s own statistics where possible. Depending on the title, the overlay may show FPS, frame time, ping, packet loss, server tick rate, interpolation, connection quality, and CPU or GPU timing. Menu names differ by game and software version, so there is no universal path.

3. Compare average FPS with frame-time behavior
Record average FPS, 1% lows, and frame-time spikes. Lower the resolution temporarily. If FPS rises substantially, the GPU is likely limiting performance. If changing resolution has little effect, the CPU, game engine, shader compilation, memory, storage, or another subsystem may be responsible.
4. Check network stability, not just download speed
For online games, check latency to the actual game region, jitter, packet loss, route stability, and whether other devices are saturating the connection. Uploads, backups, video streams, and large downloads can create bufferbloat, in which packets wait in an overloaded queue.

A generic speed test may use a nearby test server rather than the game’s server. NVIDIA specifically notes that a service-specific GeForce NOW test can differ from a generic Speedtest because they use different destinations. See NVIDIA’s network-testing guidance.
5. Check the server region
Choose the nearest available region when the game permits it. You cannot configure away the physical distance to a distant data center, although routing and server infrastructure can affect the final result.

Ethernet is a useful diagnostic baseline because it removes wireless interference and signal-quality variables. If Ethernet is impractical, a strong 5 GHz or newer Wi-Fi connection may be perfectly usable. Wi-Fi is not automatically unsuitable; consistency, congestion, interference, packet loss, and signal strength matter more than the label.
NVIDIA recommends wired Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi for GeForce NOW and lists a requirement of less than 80 ms to an NVIDIA data center for its service conditions. See the current official requirements.
7. Check the display and synchronization chain
Confirm that the operating system is actually using the monitor’s intended refresh rate. Also test the display’s Game Mode, V-Sync, VRR, frame cap, fullscreen or borderless mode, and GPU-driver latency settings. TVs may add substantial processing delay unless game mode is enabled.
On supported hardware and games, NVIDIA recommends Reflex as a system-latency option. Its latency optimization guide also discusses driver-level Ultra Low Latency Mode when Reflex is unavailable. Reflex takes precedence over the driver setting when both apply, but availability and ideal settings depend on the game and platform.

What to fix first
If ping is high or unstable
- Select a closer game-server region.
- Try Ethernet, or improve the position and signal quality of the Wi-Fi access point.
- Stop large uploads, downloads, backups, and streams during play.
- Investigate bufferbloat and router traffic management if latency rises under load.
- Test at different times of day.
- Check whether the game is experiencing an outage or routing problem.
- Contact the ISP if latency remains high on an otherwise idle local network.
Do not expect a faster GPU to lower ordinary game-server ping. A faster internet plan may help with congestion, but it does not guarantee a shorter route or lower baseline latency.
If FPS is low or inconsistent
- Lower resolution and GPU-heavy settings such as ray tracing, shadows, volumetric effects, reflections, and view distance.
- Close unnecessary overlays and background applications.
- Check CPU and GPU temperatures for throttling.
- Update or reinstall graphics drivers when a driver issue is suspected.
- Use a frame cap if it produces steadier frame times.
- Upgrade the GPU when testing shows a GPU limit, or the CPU when the processor is the limit.
- Increase memory capacity only when monitoring demonstrates memory pressure.
A faster internet connection will not raise FPS in a locally installed game unless the connection was causing a separate download, streaming, or congestion problem.
If FPS and ping look good but controls feel delayed
Investigate system and input latency. The path may include the mouse or controller, USB or Bluetooth transmission, operating-system handling, game-engine simulation, CPU submission, GPU rendering, frame queuing, display scanout, and pixel response. NVIDIA describes these PC-latency stages in its PC latency guide.
Check for excessive GPU utilization, V-Sync queueing, an incorrect refresh-rate selection, display processing, wireless controller latency, and game-specific low-latency options. High FPS can help, but a high FPS counter does not prove that end-to-end latency is low.
Cloud gaming is a separate latency problem
With a locally installed game, your device renders the frames. With cloud gaming, input travels to a remote machine, the game runs there, the image is captured and encoded, the video travels back, and your device decodes and displays it. The complete path can include:
- Controller or mouse input.
- Network travel to the cloud server.
- Game simulation and server processing.
- Rendering and frame capture.
- Video encoding.
- Return network travel.
- Video decoding.
- Display presentation and pixel response.
Microsoft separates these engine, input, network, encoding, decoding, and display components in its game-streaming latency documentation. A stream that displays 120 or 240 FPS can still feel delayed if the network route, encoder, decoder, controller, or television adds latency.
For cloud gaming, assess the entire connection to the provider’s data center rather than relying on a generic speed test. NVIDIA’s GeForce NOW requirements include wired or 5 GHz connectivity, latency limits, and different bandwidth targets for different resolutions and frame rates. Requirements and availability vary by service, region, plan, and date.
Buying priorities
Measure before spending money:
- Fix configuration and congestion first. Enable the correct display refresh rate, stop background traffic, and test game mode and synchronization settings.
- Use Ethernet where practical. Buy a new router only if testing shows poor coverage, congestion, outdated wireless capability, or inadequate traffic management. “Gaming” branding alone does not prove lower ping.
- Upgrade the monitor when the current display is limited to 60 Hz, has high measured input latency, lacks useful VRR, or cannot take advantage of the frames your system consistently produces.
- Upgrade the GPU or CPU only after monitoring identifies the corresponding local bottleneck.
- Consider cloud gaming only when the service has a nearby region and your connection is stable enough for its complete streaming pipeline.
Frame generation also needs qualification. Generated frames can increase the displayed FPS number without reducing the time required for the underlying game simulation and input-response frames. Judge native/rendered FPS, frame pacing, and end-to-end latency separately.
