openrl.dll is missing, not found, or could not be loaded because the application that needs it cannot access a working copy. The most common documented host is the Unity Editor, where openrl.dll belongs inside the Editor installation rather than Windows itself.

You may see one of these messages:

  • “The program can’t start because openrl.dll is missing from your computer.”
  • “openrl.dll was not found.”
  • “The code execution cannot proceed because openrl.dll was not found.”
  • “openrl.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error,” sometimes with status 0xc0000020.

Which fix applies to you

Use the first description that matches your situation:

  • The error started after installing, updating, uninstalling, or moving Unity: repair or reinstall that exact Unity Editor version.
  • The file is absent, zero bytes, or suddenly disappeared: check antivirus quarantine, then repair Unity.
  • The file exists but Windows reports “Bad Image”: repair Unity and investigate its native runtime dependencies.
  • Only one Unity version fails: repair that Editor rather than reinstalling Windows.
  • Several unrelated programs show DLL errors: check Windows components, malware, storage health, and recent system changes.
  • You downloaded openrl.dll from a DLL website: remove that replacement and reinstall the owning application from its official installer.

Do not begin by copying the file into System32 or SysWOW64. openrl.dll is an application DLL, not a normal Windows system component.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the affected Unity Editor

This is the safest and most likely solution when Unity is the parent application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Unity installations have placed OpenRL.dll in the Editor directory alongside native files including OpenRL_pthread.dll, embree.dll, tbb.dll, and tbbmalloc.dll. That arrangement matters: replacing one file from another release can create a version or architecture mismatch.

If Unity was installed with Unity Hub

  1. Close Unity, Unity Hub, and any Unity-based tool.
  2. Open Unity Hub.
  3. Select Installs.
  4. Locate the Editor version that launches with the error.
  5. Open its three-dot menu.
  6. Choose the available modify, manage, uninstall, or reinstall option.
  7. Repair the installation if Hub provides that choice.
  8. If repair is unavailable, uninstall only the affected Editor version.
  9. Reinstall the same version from Unity Hub or the official Unity archive.
  10. Start Unity again and open the project.

On Windows, Hub-managed Editors are normally under a path similar to:

C:Program FilesUnityHubEditor

The exact folder can differ if you selected another installation location.

If Unity was installed manually

Use the original installer for the same Editor release and architecture. Run it as an administrator if Windows prevents it from modifying the installation directory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not copy openrl.dll from Unity 5.6 into Unity 2019, Unity 6, or another release. Public Unity reports show that OpenRL file versions differ between Editor generations. Historical reports identify version 1.5.100.0 in older installations, but that is not a universal version for every Unity release.

Confirm the repair

Open the affected Unity Editor folder and check that:

  • OpenRL.dll exists.
  • It is not zero bytes.
  • Related native files were restored at the same time.
  • The file is inside the Editor’s own directory, not a Windows system folder.

If Unity starts normally, the application repair worked. If the same file disappears again, continue to the antivirus section before reinstalling repeatedly.

Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine and file integrity

Security software can quarantine or remove an application DLL. A community report associated zero-byte Unity native DLLs, including OpenRL.dll, with antivirus problems, but that does not prove antivirus is the cause in every case.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Choose Protection history.
  4. Look for an entry involving Unity, OpenRL, or the affected installation path.
  5. Do not restore the file blindly. First confirm that:
  6. the path belongs to the legitimate Unity installation;
  7. the Unity installer came from an official source;
  8. the file was not placed there by an untrusted program.
  9. If the detection is confirmed as a false positive, restore it according to your security software’s instructions.
  10. Repair or reinstall the Unity Editor afterward so the complete set of files is restored.

Avoid adding a broad exclusion for C:Program Files or your entire drive. If a narrowly scoped exclusion is necessary, apply it only after verifying the installer and following the security vendor’s guidance.

If the file is present but has a size of zero bytes, treat it as corrupted. Reinstall Unity instead of downloading a replacement.

Fix 3: Repair the Visual C++ dependency

Historical OpenRL builds reference the Visual C++ 2010 runtime files MSVCP100.dll and MSVCR100.dll. A missing runtime can cause a present openrl.dll to fail, but installing Visual C++ will not recreate an OpenRL file that was deleted.

  1. Identify whether the affected Unity process is 32-bit or 64-bit.
  2. Install or repair the matching Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 SP1 Redistributable:
  3. x86 for a 32-bit application;
  4. x64 for a 64-bit application.
  5. Restart Windows.
  6. Launch Unity again.

A 32-bit application needs the x86 runtime even on 64-bit Windows. Installing only x64 is not sufficient in that case. Microsoft’s official package and compatibility guidance are available through the Visual C++ redistributable documentation, the Visual C++ 2010 SP1 download page, and Microsoft’s binary compatibility guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Unity still reports openrl.dll as missing after the runtime repair, the DLL itself is absent or the Unity installation is damaged. Return to Fix 1.

Fix 4: Handle a “Bad Image” or architecture mismatch

A “Bad Image” message usually means Windows found a file but could not load it. Possible causes include a damaged DLL, a missing dependency, or a 32-bit and 64-bit mismatch.

Check the following:

  • Is OpenRL.dll in the affected Editor’s directory?
  • Is the file zero bytes or unexpectedly small?
  • Was it copied from another Unity installation?
  • Did the error begin after replacing files manually?
  • Does the Unity Editor architecture match the DLL and its dependencies?
  • Are companion files such as OpenRL_pthread.dll and embree.dll also present?

The correct fix is to restore the complete matching Editor installation. Do not mix native files between Unity versions.

Fix 5: Update graphics drivers only when the symptom points there

A graphics driver update is not a substitute for restoring openrl.dll, but it is relevant if Unity also crashes during rendering, shows display-driver errors, or fails across multiple graphics applications.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
  2. Expand Display adapters.
  3. Right-click the graphics adapter.
  4. Select Update driver.
  5. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  6. Restart Windows.
  7. If the problem began immediately after a driver update, open Properties, select the Driver tab, and use Roll Back Driver when available.

For a clean vendor update, identify the graphics adapter in Device Manager and obtain the driver from the computer or GPU manufacturer’s official support page. Do not use a graphics driver package to replace an application DLL.

When Device Manager leaves you hunting through several driver versions and Windows repair commands keep repeating without showing what changed, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers; its free scan shows the findings, while driver installation is handled by the full version. Reinstalling the Unity Editor remains the definitive fix when openrl.dll itself is missing.

Fix 6: Repair Windows components when other programs are failing too

SFC and DISM are appropriate when protected Windows components may be damaged. They generally will not restore an application-owned openrl.dll inside a Unity directory.

  1. Install pending Windows updates.
  2. Restart the computer.
  3. Open Command Prompt as administrator:
  4. Open Start.
  5. Type Command Prompt.
  6. Right-click it.
  7. Select Run as administrator.
  8. Run DISM first:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. When it completes, run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows and test Unity.

Microsoft documents this DISM and SFC repair process. If the commands report repaired system files but Unity still cannot load openrl.dll, repair the Unity installation separately.

If manually identifying damaged Windows components and repeatedly interpreting SFC and DISM results is slowing you down, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported issues; its free scan shows what it finds, while repair is handled by the full version. It is optional, and it does not replace reinstalling the application that owns openrl.dll.

Do not use regsvr32 for this DLL

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. A graphics or runtime library does not automatically support that mechanism.

Running this command is therefore not a normal repair:

regsvr32 openrl.dll

It may produce a message that DllRegisterServer failed, and it cannot restore a missing dependency, correct a damaged file, or make an incompatible DLL work. Microsoft explains the command’s purpose in its regsvr32 documentation.

Why random DLL downloads are unsafe

Do not download openrl.dll from a random DLL site or copy it into System32, SysWOW64, or a global search path. The file may contain malware, belong to another Unity release, use the wrong architecture, or lack companion libraries. It can also hide the real problem until the next update.

The safe sources are:

  • the official Unity Hub installation or official Unity installer for the matching Editor;
  • a verified backup of that exact application installation;
  • official Microsoft redistributable packages when a dependency is missing.

Prevention after the repair

  • Keep each Unity Editor version in its own installation directory.
  • Do not delete native files during manual cleanup.
  • Check antivirus quarantine if a repaired file disappears again.
  • Keep free disk space available during Unity updates.
  • Avoid mixing DLLs between Editor releases.
  • Record the affected Unity version and installation path before contacting support.
  • If several native applications fail, investigate Windows health, malware, disk errors, or a recent restore point rather than repeatedly reinstalling one DLL.

FAQ

Is openrl.dll part of Windows?

No. Available evidence places it in third-party application directories, especially the Unity Editor directory.

What is OpenRL?

OpenRL is a graphics and ray-tracing library historically associated with Imagination Technologies and bundled with some Unity Editor installations. It is not a general Windows runtime.

Is Unity the only program that uses it?

Unity is the best-documented host found, but there is no reliable public inventory proving that it is the only application that bundles the file. Identify the parent program from the error path before repairing anything.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will installing Visual C++ fix the error?

Only if the DLL exists and its required Visual C++ runtime is missing. It will not restore a deleted or corrupted openrl.dll.

Should I run SFC and DISM first?

Only when Windows itself appears damaged or multiple unrelated programs report system DLL errors. For a Unity-only failure, repair Unity first.

What should support receive?

Provide the exact error text, affected program, Unity version, installation path, Windows version, antivirus history, file size and version information, and whether the file is absent, zero bytes, or present but rejected.
