Opinion: Oblivion Hit Harder Than Skyrim—and Still Does

Oblivion can feel more affecting than Skyrim because it draws an unknown prisoner into an imperial crisis before making them a hero. Here’s how the games’ premises and settings shape that difference.

Oblivion can hit harder than Skyrim because it makes an imperial crisis feel close before it makes the player feel important. You begin as an unknown prisoner, witness Emperor Uriel Septim VII’s assassination, and are pulled into the search for the lost heir as an invasion threatens the Empire. Skyrim, by contrast, introduces its protagonist as the prophesied Dragonborn. That difference in narrative distance is why Oblivion’s story still lands for me—not because one game is objectively better, but because its crisis begins with vulnerability rather than destiny.

Is Oblivion better than Skyrim?

Not in any universal sense. “Hits harder” is a judgment about how a story frames its player, and the two games offer different kinds of fantasy. Oblivion makes you feel like a small person swept into a dangerous political and supernatural upheaval. Skyrim makes you the person prophecy says can meet the upheaval head-on.

That contrast is supported by the games’ official premises, not by a measurement of how players feel. Bethesda describes Skyrim’s player as the last Dovahkiin, a prophesied hero destined to save the Empire, while the official Oblivion launch premise starts with an assassination, a vacant throne, a missing heir, and an invasion threat. I find the second setup more intimate: the stakes are enormous, but the player is not introduced as their obvious answer.

Why Oblivion’s crisis feels personal

You enter as an unknown participant

Oblivion begins with the Emperor’s death in front of you. You are not introduced as the heir, a champion, or the foretold savior; you are a prisoner whose path crosses the Emperor’s at the moment his line is under attack. The search for the lost heir gives the early story a human, practical focus: carry a warning, find the person who might inherit the throne, and try to keep a collapsing situation from getting worse.

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion: Game of the Year Edition
  • Live another life in another world, create and play any character you can imagine
  • An all-new combat and magic system brings first person role-playing to a new level of intensity
  • Groundbreaking AI system gives characters full 24/7 schedules
  • New lands to explore in the Shivering Isles expansion
  • Challenging new foes, hideous insects, Flesh Atronachs, skeletal Shambles, amphibeous Grummites and more

That modest starting point changes the scale of the journey. The player becomes consequential through what they do, rather than through a prophecy that has already assigned them a cosmic role. The result is a story that can feel less like fulfilling a legend and more like being caught in events that are too large to control.

The central threat is political before it is personal destiny

The official launch description frames the conflict around the succession crisis and the invasion threatening Tamriel. These are direct, legible stakes: an Emperor is dead, the throne is endangered, and the Empire needs its lost heir. The supernatural danger expands the story, but the premise first gives the player a damaged institution and a desperate search to follow.

That framing is not inherently more sophisticated than Skyrim’s epic, and it does not guarantee a stronger emotional response. It simply gives Oblivion a different emotional entry point—one rooted in uncertainty, loyalty, and the possibility of failure.

How Skyrim changes the emotional scale

The Dragonborn premise makes the player central from the start

Bethesda’s description of Skyrim identifies the protagonist as the last Dovahkiin, a prophesied hero. That is an immediately powerful fantasy: the player has a role in a legend and the capacity to confront a threat on a mythic scale. It also creates more distance between the player and the ordinary people endangered by events. The story announces that you matter before you have had to prove it.

  • Create your own way from the noble warrior to the sinister assassin to the wrinkled wizard or funny blacksmith and play in your way.

For some players, that is exactly the appeal. A prophecy can make exploration feel charged with purpose, and a hero’s epic can turn every major encounter into part of a grand design. But if what you want is the sensation of being drawn into a crisis from the margins, Oblivion’s less exalted beginning may be more affecting.

Cyrodiil and Skyrim give their stories different moods

The settings reinforce the narrative contrast. Bethesda’s retrospective describes Oblivion’s Cyrodiil through forests, pastures, and coastlines, while characterizing Skyrim as a harsh northern landscape. The difference is not simply “bright versus dark”: both worlds contain danger. It is that Cyrodiil’s varied, lived-in countryside can make the invasion feel like a rupture of familiar life, while Skyrim’s mountains, snow, ruins, and Blackreach make hardship and grandeur part of the landscape from the outset.

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion - Game of the Year Edition (Renewed)
  • Includes Shivering Isles and Knights of the Nine expansions

In Oblivion, a crisis moves through a broad imperial heartland; its threat feels like something breaking into a place that ought to be stable. Skyrim makes the land itself feel severe and ancient, a fitting stage for a saga about dragons and a prophesied hero. The mood of one is upheaval in a recognizable world; the mood of the other is survival and legend in a formidable one.

Why the argument still works with Oblivion Remastered

Oblivion Remastered released on April 22, 2025. Bethesda calls it a remaster rather than a remake and says the original remains at its core while elements including art, animation, effects, world details, systems, and leveling were updated. The project team described its aim this way: “We never wanted to remake it – but remaster it – where the original game was there as you remember playing it, but seen through today’s technology.”

The modernized presentation does not change the premise that gives the original its distinctive emotional shape. Bethesda’s extended look notes additions and revisions such as sprinting, updated third-person play, recreated combat animations, and a redesigned leveling system drawing inspiration from both Oblivion and Skyrim. Xbox Wire says the remaster uses Unreal Engine 5 for its visual treatment and includes the Knights of the Nine and Shivering Isles expansions. Steam’s listing also names those expansions and additional DLC.

Xbox Wire’s launch report listed Xbox Series X|S, PC, cloud, and PlayStation 5. Bethesda’s page also lists Nintendo Switch 2 launch and patch news in 2026. Availability can vary by region and store, so check the current platform and edition listing where you plan to play.

What the games’ popularity can—and cannot—tell us

The commercial figures show that both games reached large audiences, but they do not settle which one has the stronger emotional impact. In 2007, Take-Two, 2K Games, and Bethesda reported more than three million Oblivion units sold in territories where Take-Two had distribution rights; that is not a definitive worldwide lifetime total. Bethesda’s retrospective cites a 2014 press release saying Skyrim had sold over 20 million copies by then, which is a dated figure, not a current lifetime count. The figures have different dates and scopes, so they are not a like-for-like comparison—and neither measures how deeply a story lands.

Which game should you play first?

If you want an answer to “would you recommend just getting Skyrim for cheap or buying the hype and starting with Oblivion,” choose by the kind of story you want rather than by a claim that one is the definitive Elder Scrolls experience.

  • Start with Oblivion if an intimate entry into an imperial crisis, a missing heir, and a world threatened from within sounds more compelling than beginning as a prophesied hero. The current remaster is the modernized edition, with the original game at its core.
  • Start with Skyrim if you want its northern setting and a protagonist whose destiny is central to the premise.
  • Play both if you want to feel the series’ shift between a succession-and-invasion story and a mythic hero’s epic. Their contrast is more interesting than trying to turn “better” into a universal verdict.
