The project’s documented releases are old: its page lists desktop version 0.16.1 from June 3, 2018, and Android version 0.16.1a from June 11, 2017. Those dates do not establish whether either build works on a current device. If you want the actively developed official client, look to osu!’s separate lazer project.
What is opsu!?
opsu! is a community-made client for the rhythm game osu!, created by Jeffrey Han. Its project README describes it as an unofficial open-source client written in Java using Slick2D and LWJGL. It is not the official osu! client, and the available information does not establish feature parity between the two.
The opsu! project page lists support for Windows, OS X, and Linux, and describes an Android port. These are the platforms the project lists, not confirmation that its older builds install or run on current operating systems.
Which versions are listed, and will they work today?
The opsu! project page lists these releases:
| Build | Release listed by the project | What that establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Desktop v0.16.1 | June 3, 2018 | The latest listed desktop release; current OS compatibility is not stated. |
| Android v0.16.1a | June 11, 2017 | The latest listed Android release; compatibility with current Android versions is not stated. |
The project documentation does not provide a current compatibility matrix or contemporary device testing. As a result, whether a listed build will install or run on a particular Windows, macOS, Linux, or Android version remains unresolved. The Android port’s existence alone is not evidence that it works on a specific modern phone or tablet.

How does opsu! compare with the official osu! client?
The official osu! project maintains a separate client called lazer. Its repository README describes lazer as under ongoing development and lists release options for Windows 10+, macOS 12+, Linux x64, iOS 13.4+, and Android 5+. These are the README’s platform listings; check the project’s current download information for time-sensitive availability.
| Consideration | opsu! | Official osu! lazer |
|---|---|---|
| Status | Unofficial community client. | Official osu! project client; described as under ongoing development. |
| Platforms listed | Windows, OS X, Linux, and an Android port. | Windows 10+, macOS 12+, Linux x64, iOS 13.4+, and Android 5+, according to the repository README. |
| Release context | Latest listed desktop release: June 3, 2018; Android: June 11, 2017. | Ongoing development; the repository lists current release options. |
| Current compatibility | Not established for particular current operating systems or devices. | Platform minimums are stated in the repository README; consult current official download information. |
Choose based on what you need: opsu! is a separate client with older documented releases, while lazer is the official project’s actively developed client. The platform listings and release dates do not, on their own, establish comparative gameplay features.

What do you need to play beatmaps in opsu!?
Beatmaps are required. The opsu! README describes three ways to make them available:
- Use the client’s Downloads menu to download maps.
- Place manually obtained
.oszfiles in theImport/directory so the client can unpack them. - If osu! is installed, let opsu! attempt to read its beatmaps, or configure the beatmap directory.
On first run, the application parses beatmaps. The README also says to adjust Music Offset if hit objects appear out of sync with the music. These are instructions from the project documentation, not confirmation that the steps work in every current build or operating system.

What are the software and licensing requirements?
For desktop, the opsu! README states a Java Runtime Environment 7 or higher requirement. This is the project’s documented prerequisite and may be dated; it should not be read as current compatibility advice.
The opsu! repository states that opsu! is licensed under GNU GPL version 3. That license statement applies to opsu! itself. The official osu! repository describes osu!’s code and framework as MIT licensed, while noting that branding and game resources have separate terms. Neither client’s code license settles rights for music, beatmaps, branding, or other content.
