Optional Quests in Monster Hunter Wilds are repeatable hunts with set objectives and conditions. They are useful for gathering a particular monster’s materials, progressing Hunter Rank, and completing NPC requests—including a quest chain that rewards the Armorcharm and Powercharm.

What are Optional Quests in Monster Hunter Wilds?

Optional Quests are repeatable hunts or slay quests with preset objectives and conditions. Depending on the quest, those conditions can include a Hunter Rank requirement, time limit, player limit, and failure conditions. They are distinct from Side Missions, which are tied to particular NPCs and their own unlocks and rewards. RPG Site’s Optional Quest guide describes their use for repeatedly hunting a target to collect materials for equipment.

They are also distinct from Field Investigations and event quests; the terms refer to different quest types, even when each offers a way to hunt monsters.

How do I unlock optional quests in Monster Hunter Wilds?

Unlocks come from progressing through the game and checking the people and creatures you encounter. These are practical checks to make as you open new areas and advance into High Rank:

  • Talk to NPCs with a marker above them. A symbol can indicate that a character has a quest or request to offer.
  • Hunt small monsters in newly reached areas. RPG Site reports this as one way to prompt Optional Quest unlocks; repeat the check after reaching High Rank.
  • Continue the campaign and raise Hunter Rank. The PlayStation endgame guide says key campaign quests raise the Hunter Rank ceiling, opening more challenging Optional Quests and Field Investigations. RPG Site reports that Optional Quest unlocks continue into endgame, including the HR 50-or-higher range.

For Hunter Rank progress, the PlayStation guide also recommends taking Optional Quests and Field Investigations. On the world map, you can select a roaming monster for an immediate hunt or save it as an Investigation for Guild Points. Alma lets you take an Investigation up to three times.

Why do Optional Quests?

Choose an Optional Quest based on what you need from it. The main reasons to take one are:

  • Wild New Adventure – Monster Hunter Wilds follows the story of a special Research Commission investigating the Forbidden Lands. Fully voiced for the first time in the series, the hunter is joined in their journey by a colorful cast of characters, including a Palico partner, Guild-appointed Handler Alma, trusty smithy Gemma, and the mysterious child Nata. Together, the team ventures into an unexplored new frontier where surprises await around every corner.
  • A Living World – The Forbidden Lands spans multiple biomes with dynamic identities, such as the Windward Plains and Scarlet Forest, where the ecosystems shift between vibrant seasons brimming with life, and unforgiving climates where monsters fight over limited resources. Changes in the landscape will impact the creatures that live there and push hunters to adapt as well.
  • New Monsters and Wildlife – Monster Hunter Wilds features a variety of new creatures, ranging from herds of small species to large monsters – some of which roam the Forbidden Lands in packs. Every creature hunters encounter in the wild has carved out a special place in its habitat and possesses unique attacks and behaviors.
  • Players can also now ride atop the Seikret, an agile new mount enabling hunters to traverse difficult terrain, perform actions like sharpening weapons on the move, and switch between two weapons while out on hunts!
  • Evolved Hunting Action – The series’ acclaimed action-packed gameplay is back and more exciting than ever! Hunters can look forward to tracking down monsters with an array of new moves, special abilities, equipment, and more. The action also now flows seamlessly from cutscenes to gameplay, resulting in a new level of immersion.
  • Farm a specific monster. A repeatable quest lets you target the monster whose materials you need for equipment.
  • Gain Hunter Rank. Optional Quests are one route for raising HR, while campaign progression raises the HR ceiling.
  • Complete useful NPC requests. Prioritize Palico requests when improving Palico support abilities is a goal.
  • Earn particular rewards. Some quest chains provide valuable items rather than only a target’s materials.

Before accepting, check the monster or material you want, any HR requirement, the client or reward, and the time, player, and failure conditions. That helps distinguish a useful repeatable hunt from a quest that does not fit your current goal.

How to get the Armorcharm and Powercharm

The documented charm route starts after Chapter 4’s “Lurking Shadows.” The official PlayStation endgame guide gives this sequence:
