Oracle Cloud vs Google Cloud for Hosting a 24/7 YouTube Livestream

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Neither Oracle Cloud nor Google Cloud is automatically cheaper or better for a 24/7 YouTube livestream. The answer depends on whether you want to operate an encoder on a virtual machine or use Google’s managed Live Stream API, and on your region, video format, bitrate, network route, and recovery plan. These are different architectures, so compare complete workloads—not a VM’s hourly price against a managed channel’s rate.

First, distinguish the two Google Cloud options

A self-managed virtual machine (VM) runs software you configure to send a video feed to YouTube. Google Compute Engine and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) compute instances fit this model: you manage the machine, encoder or relay, stream key, monitoring, and recovery.

Google also offers the managed Live Stream API. It accepts configured inputs and produces configured outputs; its pricing is based on active channels and stream configuration, rather than simply the price of a VM. It is not a like-for-like alternative to renting one VM. Google publishes separate Compute Engine pricing and Live Stream API pricing.

The documented OCI path considered here is a compute instance. The available information does not establish an equivalent OCI-managed live-encoding service. That does not mean no other OCI arrangement is possible; it means the fair comparison supported here is OCI VM versus Google VM, or Google’s managed API as a separate option.

Which cloud is cheaper for a 24/7 YouTube stream?

There is no defensible universal winner or all-in monthly total without a workload and deployment region. A continuous stream runs for roughly 24 hours a day, so recurring runtime and network costs matter. Build an estimate for the same video job and include the costs that the architecture actually uses.

For two self-managed VMs

Compare an OCI compute instance with a Google Compute Engine VM using the chosen regions and machine configurations. Include the VM runtime, storage, network transfer, and any additional services needed for monitoring or recovery. If encoding is required, account for the processing workload as well as the outgoing stream.

For Google’s managed API

Estimate the Live Stream API using the number and configuration of inputs and outputs, resolution, codec, active time, region, and any optional features. Google’s pricing page provides rates and examples, but an example configuration is not the bill for an unspecified channel. Use the actual intended profile and current regional rates.

Make the comparison equivalent

  • Specify whether the source is already encoded or needs transcoding, along with its resolution, codec, and bitrate.
  • Choose a region for each option and account for storage and the actual network route to YouTube.
  • Include all active hours and services needed for the same level of monitoring and recovery.
  • Check current pricing and account-specific limits before relying on an estimate; provider prices and limits can change.

For current calculations, consult Google Compute Engine pricing, Google Live Stream API pricing, and Oracle’s VCN pricing.

Does Google Cloud charge egress to YouTube?

Do not assume that traffic sent to YouTube is free—or that a general network price necessarily describes your specific route. Google’s network charges depend on the service and route classification. Check the applicable categories in Google Cloud network pricing for your configuration; the available information does not establish a universal YouTube egress exemption.

Oracle’s VCN pricing page states that the first 10 TB per month of public internet egress is not charged. This is Oracle’s stated allowance, not a complete estimate or a guarantee that every account, region, and configuration will have no egress charge. Confirm the current terms and how your traffic is classified in your account.

Continuity: what happens when the stream or service needs a restart?

With either provider’s self-managed VM approach, you are responsible for keeping the source available, supervising the encoder or relay, detecting failures, and reconnecting to YouTube. A running VM alone does not guarantee that a livestream stays healthy. Design and test the process for restarting the software and recovering a dropped feed.

Google documents a specific constraint for its managed Live Stream API: “Live stream sessions last for 24 hours after you start a channel.” An active channel may be restarted after that session. Plan for the restart and recovery if you choose the API; this limit is not evidence that a Compute Engine VM must stop after 24 hours. See Google Cloud Live Stream API quotas and limits.

Set up either cloud path for YouTube

  1. Define the stream. Record the source format, resolution, codec, bitrate, and whether it needs encoding or transcoding. Choose a region and VM shape, or—if using Google’s managed API—input and output profiles.
  2. Configure the sending system. On a VM, install and configure the encoder or relay appropriate to the source. For the Live Stream API, configure the service’s inputs and outputs. Keep the YouTube stream key private and enter it only in the system that needs to send the stream.
  3. Use YouTube’s stream URL and key. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain how to configure them. Do not publish or share the key; anyone with access may be able to stream to your channel.
  4. Test before depending on it. YouTube recommends testing representative audio and motion and monitoring stream health. Its encoder guidance says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Follow the current YouTube encoder settings guidance for supported settings, then confirm the actual feed in YouTube Studio.
  5. Monitor and rehearse recovery. Check that the stream is reaching YouTube and that audio and video remain usable. Test what happens if the sending process stops, the source disappears, or the connection drops; document how to restart it. For the Live Stream API, include its 24-hour session restart in the operating plan.

Common problems and what to check

  • YouTube does not receive a feed: verify the configured stream URL and key, confirm the sender is running, and check the service’s logs and network path. If the key may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube and update the sender.
  • The stream starts but video or audio is unstable: check the source and encoder output against YouTube’s current settings guidance. Test with representative motion and sound, and inspect YouTube’s stream-health indicators.
  • A managed API session ends after a day: this is consistent with Google’s documented 24-hour active-session limit. Schedule and test a channel restart and recovery rather than treating the API as an uninterrupted session.
  • The bill differs from the estimate: recheck region, active hours, VM or API configuration, storage, and network transfer classification. A published allowance or rate example is not necessarily your account’s final bill.
  • The tenancy cannot create the selected resources: check the current account limits in the provider console and adjust the configuration or request a limit change where available. OCI says limits vary by pricing model and directs customers to the console for current tenancy values; see OCI service limits.

  • One flat price per slot for any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
  • Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card; one free day per account.
