If Xbox One displays “Your profile was not completely downloaded. Please download it again from Xbox Live,” first check Xbox network status, then remove the affected account from the console, restart, and add it again. This refreshes the console’s stored sign-in without deleting the Microsoft account. If the message appears only inside an Xbox 360 backward-compatible game, the problem may be with that game’s Xbox 360 profile session rather than your Xbox One dashboard sign-in.
What the error means
The console has a profile locally, but it has not completed syncing with Xbox Live. That does not by itself mean your Microsoft account has been deleted or permanently damaged. The wording is associated with Xbox 360 profile authentication, and players have reported it when starting backward-compatible games on Xbox One, including Halo Wars, Fallout 3, and Fable 2 (Halo Wars report; Fallout 3 report; Fable 2 report).

- It appears on the Xbox One dashboard: Check the network, Xbox services, account credentials, and local profile registration.
- It appears only in one backward-compatible Xbox 360 game: The Xbox 360 compatibility session, that game’s local data, or its sign-in handoff may be involved.
- It started after a password or security change: The console may need a fresh sign-in and any required security verification.
- The account fails on more than one console: Look into account access, service availability, or restrictions instead of repeatedly resetting one console.
Try these checks first
- Check service status. Visit Xbox Support for current service information and support routing. If sign-in services are unavailable, wait for service to return before changing local data.
- Check the connection. Confirm the console is online. If practical, test another network, such as a phone hotspot, to see whether the router or internet provider may be involved.
- Quit and relaunch the game. Close the affected game completely, then start it again. Sign out and back in if the console prompts you.
- Power-cycle the Xbox One. Hold the console’s power button for about 10 seconds until it shuts down. Unplug the power cable, wait several minutes, reconnect it, and turn the console on. This clears temporary system state; it is not a guaranteed cache repair and does not delete games, accounts, or saves.
If Microsoft presents a security challenge or account-lock message, stop retrying passwords and follow the account recovery or verification prompts. Repeated guesses will not repair a cached profile.
Remove and re-add the account
This is the main local profile refresh to try if the quick checks do not help. Xbox’s account-management guidance describes removing and adding accounts on Xbox One; dashboard wording can vary by version and region (Xbox account-management instructions).

- Press the Xbox button, then open Profile & system > Settings > Account > Remove accounts.
- Select the affected account and choose Remove.
- Restart the console.
- Press the Xbox button and open Profile & system > Add or switch > Add new.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account used for Xbox and complete any password, two-step verification, or other security prompts.
This removes the account registration from that console; it does not delete the Microsoft account, purchases, achievements, or subscription. You will need access to the account credentials and possibly its verification method. Cloud-synchronized saves remain associated with the account, but unsynchronized offline progress is a separate risk: do not delete save data or reset the console casually.
If it happens only in an Xbox 360 backward-compatible game
Xbox One can show you as signed in while a backward-compatible title still fails to complete its Xbox 360 profile sign-in. Treat that as a diagnostic possibility, not a universal explanation for every occurrence.

- Quit the title completely and restart the Xbox One.
- Confirm the intended Microsoft account is added to the console.
- Launch the Xbox 360 game and allow its compatibility-layer sign-in prompt to finish.
- If another account is signed in, sign it out and retry with the intended account.
- Try a second backward-compatible Xbox 360 game. If that works, the fault may be specific to the first game’s data or sign-in handoff.
Reports of the message in backward-compatible titles also describe trouble saving progress or syncing achievements, so keep the console online and allow synchronization to finish before playing or changing save data (Fallout 3 report).
Handle local save data with care
Do not delete saved data as an early profile fix. Consider a local save-data remedy only if the account signs in successfully, the failure is limited to one game, and the console has had time online to synchronize.

- Where the game’s saved-data options offer it, Delete from console is the less destructive diagnostic choice: the console can download a synchronized cloud copy again.
- Delete everywhere can remove the cloud copy as well as local data. Use it only if you are certain the progress is backed up elsewhere or you intend to discard it.
- Offline progress that has not synchronized may be lost even when you expect a cloud save to exist. If synchronization status is uncertain, stop rather than deleting.
Do not treat Xbox 360 and Xbox One storage instructions as interchangeable. In particular, an older Xbox 360 “clear system cache” path is not a universal Xbox One menu procedure. Related profile troubleshooting advice also stresses that save removal depends on whether the data can be restored from Xbox network storage (profile-reading troubleshooting).
Reset the console only as a later step
If account refresh and the game-specific checks fail, a reset that preserves installed games and apps is a less destructive console-recovery option. Before proceeding, make sure you can sign in again and that important saves have synchronized. Xbox documents the reset choices and their workflow (Xbox console reset instructions).

- Open Settings > System > Console info > Reset console.
- Choose Reset and keep my games & apps.
- After setup, add the account if needed and test the affected game.
This can help when local system state is damaged, but it can remove settings, require sign-in again, and expose unsynchronized local data. It will not fix an Xbox service outage, account suspension, incorrect credentials, or a server-side account problem. Reset and remove everything is a destructive factory-reset option, not a normal first-line fix; do not choose it without a clear backup and support plan.

- The account fails on multiple consoles: Use Microsoft account recovery or contact Xbox Support rather than repeating local resets.
- You cannot access the account email, password, or verification method: Recover account access first. Removing the console profile does not bypass account security.
- You see repeated security prompts or suspect compromise: Follow Microsoft’s recovery and security steps; do not disable account protections to force a sign-in.
- Only online play is blocked: A separate message such as “current profile is not allowed to play on Xbox Live” can concern multiplayer access or entitlements, and is not the same error as an incomplete profile download (related profile-access error).
If you contact Xbox Support, note the exact message, any error code, console model, affected game, whether another backward-compatible game works, and whether another account signs in successfully.

Fixes to avoid
- Do not create a child or family account as a generic repair. Family privacy settings can affect online features, but changing family membership is not a dependable fix for this profile-download message (example of older advice).
- Do not disable two-step verification or other security controls just to make the console sign in.
- Do not delete all saved data before confirming what has synchronized.
- Do not repeatedly factory-reset the console when the same account fails across consoles or Xbox services are unavailable.
