Overpass is a technical off-road obstacle racer, not a conventional high-speed racer. Critics recognize its unusual premise and the satisfaction of mastering difficult courses, but often fault its steep challenge, rough handling and technical polish. Whether it suits you depends largely on whether careful obstacle negotiation sounds rewarding—or frustrating.
What is Overpass?
Developed by Zordix Racing, Overpass is an off-road racing game built around navigating obstacles and managing vehicle control. The emphasis is on picking through challenging terrain rather than maintaining speed around a conventional circuit. That distinction explains much of the critical response: the game offers a distinctive kind of driving challenge, but it is not designed to provide instant speed or forgiving handling.

What do critics say about Overpass?
Reviewers commonly praise the unusual focus on technical off-road driving and acknowledge that mastering the courses can be satisfying. Their main reservations concern the difficulty, control feel and rough edges. Some reviews describe the experience as frustrating, technically rough or short on polish; those criticisms temper the appeal of its distinctive idea.
XboxAddict’s April 1, 2020 review, reproduced on Metacritic, sums up the genre difference: “Overpass is a racing game that defies the genre, as it’s not what you would consider a true racing game.” For the Switch edition specifically, Nintendo Life’s March 11, 2020 review, also reproduced on Metacritic, called it “an awkward, ornery racing game that stubbornly refuses to indulge your need for speed and instant gratification.”

Metacritic scores by platform
Metacritic’s platform pages show different critic scores and review counts. These are platform-specific aggregator statistics, not a single score for every version of the game.
| Platform | Metascore | Critic reviews counted | Page classification or reported emphasis |
|---|---|---|---|
| PlayStation 4 | 54 | 19 | “Mixed or Average”; excerpts include praise for challenge and replaying tracks, alongside complaints about frustration, technical roughness and limited polish. |
| Nintendo Switch | 60 | 5 | Excerpts emphasize a highly demanding technical experience and mention control limitations and rough edges. |
| Xbox One | 63 | 11 | Excerpts describe an unconventional, slow-paced and difficult off-road game, with criticism of technical flaws or frustration. |
Scores and counts are those reported on the respective Metacritic pages; they can change as reviews are added or page data is updated. The Switch observations above belong to that edition’s review evidence and should not automatically be applied to other platforms.

Is Overpass worth playing?
Overpass is a better fit for players who enjoy methodical challenges, careful control and repeated attempts than for players looking for fast racing and forgiving inputs. The premise offers something different from a typical circuit racer, and the satisfaction reviewers describe comes from learning to handle demanding tracks. But if frustrating difficulty or rough vehicle handling is likely to spoil the experience, its central appeal may not outweigh those drawbacks.
One COGconnected review excerpt reproduced by MonsterCritic suggests a force-feedback wheel as a reason to try the game, while saying that without one the audience is likely to be limited to off-road racing enthusiasts. That is one reviewer’s recommendation, not evidence that a wheel is required; the available information does not establish compatibility with particular wheel models.
