Overwatch 2’s Season 14 included two limited-time 6v6 experiments, not a permanent switch back from 5v5. Blizzard wanted to test different team formats and gauge player interest; the announcement left any lasting change undecided.
What Blizzard announced for Season 14
In an October 24, 2024 Director’s Take, Blizzard said it planned two separate 6v6 tests during Season 14. Each would have its own rules and balance adjustments, and both were to appear on a separate Unranked card rather than replace existing modes, seasonal events, or Quick Play: Hacked.

The first test was planned for a week into the season, with the second arriving around the midcycle. Blizzard described them as experiments to explore format designs and assess appetite for larger teams—not as a decision to restore 6v6 permanently.
How the two 6v6 tests differed
| Test | Team composition | In-match flexibility | What it explored |
|---|---|---|---|
| Min 1, Max 3 | At least one Tank, one Damage, and one Support; no role could have more than three players. | Players could switch roles during a match as long as the team stayed within the role limits. | A flexible middle ground between fixed Role Queue and Open Queue. |
| 2-2-2 Role Queue | Two Tanks, two Damage, and two Supports. | Fixed role slots through Role Queue. | A structured 2-2-2 format adapted with Overwatch 2 design principles, including less crowd control and hero reworks. |
Min 1, Max 3
Every team needed at least one player in each role, but could have up to three in any one role. That meant a team could adjust its composition during a match, provided it never dropped below one Tank, Damage, or Support or exceeded three of any role.

2-2-2 Role Queue
This version used the familiar two-per-role structure. Blizzard planned to pair it with selected Overwatch 2 principles and hero changes, so it was not simply a promise to recreate an earlier version of the game unchanged.
When the 2-2-2 test actually ran
Blizzard’s December 17, 2024 patch notes confirmed the 2-2-2 Role Queue experiment was available in Unranked from December 17, 2024, through January 6, 2025. It used Quick Play map selection and rules. The patch notes also listed hero balance adjustments that applied only to the 6v6 experiment; those changes did not establish a balance change for every Overwatch 2 mode.

Season 14 launched on December 10, 2024, as Season 14: Hazard. The launch notes promoted a 6v6 Role Queue event, while the later patch notes specify the test’s dates and implementation.
What “the catch” meant
“6v6 will feature in Season 14” meant players would be able to try test modes—not that Blizzard had committed to making 6v6 a permanent format or replacing 5v5. The separate Unranked card and mode-specific tuning were part of that limited-test approach.

Director Aaron Keller said, “Is there a world where both 5v5 and 6v6 exist permanently in Overwatch 2? If you had asked me a few months ago, I would have said no.” He framed that as a possibility to consider in light of player interest, not as an announced outcome. Blizzard said sustained participation would be a signal to do more, while the form of any next step would depend on player excitement.

The cited Season 14 announcements establish the formats, their intended placement, and the 2-2-2 test’s dates. They do not provide a named statistic or published response figure specific to those tests, so the announcement alone cannot support a numerical claim about their success.

Blizzard’s later Future Formats update continued to describe format changes as experiments and noted that results do not necessarily mean the main format will change. Its later participation figures concern other modes and a later period; they are not Season 14 6v6 test results.
