“Applying Update” can mean two different Overwatch 2 failures: the game may be applying a hotfix while you enter a match, or Battle.net/Steam may be unable to download, install, or verify files before the game starts. Follow the branch that matches your screen, beginning with non-destructive checks.
First, identify where it is stuck

A short pause after a patch can be normal. Troubleshooting is warranted when there is no progress for several minutes, the same screen returns repeatedly, or every mode—including Practice Range—fails.
Do these checks before deleting anything
- Check notices in the Battle.net launcher, Blizzard customer-support channels, and Overwatch bug/support forums. If many players report the same failure immediately after a patch, wait for an official update before reinstalling.
- Exit Overwatch 2 and Battle.net or Steam completely. In Windows Task Manager, end only clearly identified game, launcher, Battle.net Update Agent, or Steam processes. If a process name is unclear, restart Windows instead.
- Reopen the launcher and check for a pending update. Restart the computer if the launcher still behaves as though another installation is running. Blizzard puts a computer restart at the start of its installation and patching guidance: Blizzard’s Overwatch 2 troubleshooting article.
- Temporarily close VPNs, proxies, overlays, download managers, traffic-shaping tools, and nonessential background software. Keep antivirus and firewall protection enabled unless you are performing a brief, controlled test.
If the game hangs while joining a match
Use Practice Range as a safe hotfix test
- Restart the client.
- Select Practice Range.
- If Applying Update appears, leave it open for several minutes.
- If the range loads, exit normally and try another noncompetitive mode.
- If it remains frozen indefinitely, close the game and continue with repair steps.
Blizzard forum support suggested this sequence for a historical hotfix-related incident and said the original widespread issue had been resolved at that time; it is not confirmation of a current outage or a guaranteed fix: Blizzard forum guidance.
Reset local Overwatch settings
Damaged configuration data can prevent a game from completing its transition even when the menu loads.

- Close Overwatch 2.
- Open File Explorer and go to Documents.
- Back up any wanted local highlights or videos, then delete the Overwatch folder.
- Empty the Recycle Bin and relaunch.
This resets local configuration data; it is not a verified method for deleting account progress, purchases, or cloud-backed unlocks. Locally stored highlights and other unsaved files may be lost.
Battle.net: repair the installation and launcher
Run Scan and Repair
- Open Battle.net and select Overwatch 2.
- Click the cogwheel beside Play or Update.
- Choose Scan and Repair, start the scan, and let it finish.
- Restart Battle.net even if no repair is reported, then check for an update.
If repair repeatedly starts again, Blizzard forum guidance describes an advanced recovery: choose Show in Explorer, close Battle.net, confirm the correct Overwatch directory, and delete only its Data folder before reopening the launcher. This can trigger a large redownload, so do not use it as an early step: Blizzard forum repair-loop guidance.

Clear the Battle.net cache
- Close Battle.net and related processes.
- Press Windows key + R, enter
%PROGRAMDATA%, and press Enter. - Delete the Battle.net cache folder if present.
- Restart Battle.net.
Do not delete the Overwatch installation directory. Blizzard maintains current cache and file-deletion instructions in its support search: Battle.net cache resources.

Allow Battle.net, the Battle.net Agent, and Overwatch 2 through Windows Firewall and any third-party endpoint-security product. Also check Controlled Folder Access or ransomware protection. Re-enable any protection immediately after testing; never leave it disabled as a permanent “fix.”

Steam: verify the game files
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click Overwatch 2 and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Restart Steam and Overwatch 2 when verification completes.
Steam verification is the Steam equivalent of Battle.net repair; run the relevant tool for the launcher you are using, not both simultaneously. Steam identifies Blizzard as the official support provider for the game: Steam Overwatch technical support.
Test the network path
- Restart the modem and router.
- Use a wired connection if available.
- Disable VPN or proxy software temporarily.
- Check that the launcher has no download-rate limit.
- Try a different network, such as a phone hotspot, as a diagnostic.
- Ensure sufficient free disk space for patching.
If another network works, the local router, ISP route, DNS, VPN, or firewall path is more likely. If every network fails, corrupted files, launcher state, account state, or a Blizzard-side problem become more plausible. Changing DNS or launcher region is anecdotal and is not a guaranteed remedy.

Advanced Windows recovery
Reinstall Battle.net before reinstalling the whole game
Reinstalling the launcher replaces Battle.net and its support files while avoiding a full Overwatch redownload. Blizzard’s historical reset guidance may involve residual folders under %APPDATA%, %LOCALAPPDATA%, %PROGRAMDATA%, and %TEMP%; follow the current official instructions rather than deleting folders at random: Blizzard launcher-reset guidance.

Reinstall Overwatch 2 itself only after repair, cache cleanup, launcher reset, and network testing fail. Switching from Battle.net to Steam changes the launcher and verification path but cannot guarantee a fix for Windows, account, network, hardware, or server problems.

Try a new Windows administrator account
- Create or update a Windows administrator account.
- Restart and sign in to that account.
- Install or open Battle.net and test Overwatch 2.
If it works there, the original Windows profile or its permissions are implicated. Blizzard lists this as a later step for unresolved Windows 10 and 11 patching problems: official troubleshooting flow.
Console players
Use the console maker’s full restart, cache-clear, update, and game-repair or reinstall procedures, then consult Blizzard’s console support route. Do not delete Windows folders or run PC commands on Xbox, PlayStation, or Switch.
When to stop troubleshooting locally
A Blizzard-side issue becomes more likely when the problem began immediately after a major patch, affects multiple players, occurs on different networks and Windows accounts, and survives file repair and launcher reset. Do not claim that servers are down without a current official notice.

- Reset local settings if only match entry fails.
- Reinstall Battle.net; reserve a full game reinstall for last.
- Escalate to Blizzard with the results and logs.
