New Support Hero Doctrine is the surprising name shaping Overwatch 2’s early Season 5 conversation—but the strongest evidence is Blizzard’s own balance response, not a confirmed claim that he has the game’s highest win rate. Blizzard said Doctrine was overperforming compared with other supports during his trial weekend, then issued several targeted reductions when Season 5 began on October 6, 2026. With only two days of the season live as of October 8, it is too soon to call the post-patch meta settled.
Why Doctrine is drawing attention
Season 5, titled “A Grim Doctrine,” launched on October 6, 2026, alongside Doctrine’s arrival. Blizzard describes him as a Support Hero whose Eternal Scepter can heal allies and damage enemies at mid-to-long range. His bat-like drones add team healing and attack speed, while his ultimate redistributes life force. That mix gives him tools to influence both damage and team sustain. Blizzard’s Season 5 announcement outlines the hero and season.
The clearest evidence of unusual early strength comes from Blizzard’s October 6 patch notes: “Doctrine was generally well received during the trial weekend but was overperforming relative to other supports.” Blizzard’s wording refers to the trial weekend; it does not establish that Doctrine leads every current rank, mode, region, or platform after launch. The October 6 retail patch notes are the basis for the adjustments.
What Blizzard changed at launch
The October 6 update targeted several parts of Doctrine’s kit rather than relying on a single adjustment. The patch notes list these changes:

- Reduced Shrouded Momentum’s cooldown and defensive benefits.
- Shortened Deliverance’s effects while increasing its drone fire rate from 4 to 5.
These changes show Blizzard responding to perceived overperformance before the season’s retail launch. They do not, by themselves, show how the hero performs after the adjustments; that requires post-patch data gathered under consistent conditions.
How to check whether Doctrine is actually dominating
Blizzard’s Overwatch Hero Statistics page is the official live source for comparing hero performance. Its figures are drawn from the start of the latest patch, but Blizzard says data can take up to a day to catch up, and some values may be missing when the sample is insufficient. Those caveats matter especially in the first days of a new season.

- Open the Hero Statistics page and confirm the patch shown is the current one.
- Set the same game mode, platform or input, competitive tier, region, and map for every hero being compared, where those filters are available.
- Read the metric label before interpreting a figure. Pick rate is the share of total playtime spent on a hero; it is not the same as win rate or ban rate.
- Recheck after the page has had time to collect current-patch data. Blizzard says filters update data in real time except Role, which only hides other heroes.
The page accessed on October 8 displayed Doctrine’s values as 52.2%, 59.9%, and 0%, but the available extraction did not make the column labels and value order clear. Those figures should not be treated as a verified win rate, pick rate, or ban rate. Use the live page and confirm its labels and filters before drawing a conclusion.
What “dominant” means—and what the evidence does not establish
A hero can stand out in several different ways. High pick rate means players spend a larger share of playtime on that hero; it does not automatically mean the hero wins more often. A high ban rate reflects players choosing to remove a hero, not necessarily that hero’s match results. Any comparison is most meaningful when patch, mode, tier, region, platform or input, and map are held constant.

The available evidence supports a narrower conclusion: Blizzard judged Doctrine too strong relative to other supports during the trial weekend and made broad changes on launch day. It does not establish that he currently has the highest win rate, dominates every level of play, or has been adopted by professional teams. A separate historical Blizzard report said Jetpack Cat was the most-banned new hero during February 16–23, 2026, with ban rates ranging from 66.5% on North American servers to 80.7% on South Korean servers. That is a dated Season 1 ban-rate example, not evidence about Doctrine or the October Season 5 meta. Blizzard’s Weekly Recall report gives that historical context.

Doctrine’s post-patch performance will become easier to assess once the current-patch statistics have caught up and the sample grows. The most useful signal will not be a single headline percentage, but a sustained comparison with other supports under matching filters. For now, “early standout after a balance response” is more accurate than declaring him the settled king of Overwatch 2’s meta.
