The later policy is narrower: Blizzard says it will continue seasonal balance updates, rank resets and rewards, but does not plan to add new heroes or maps. The original roadmap remains useful as a record of what was announced, not as the current expansion plan.
What is Stadium in Overwatch 2?
At launch, Stadium was described as a best-of-seven, round-based mode. Between rounds, players earn Stadium Cash and spend it in the Armory to change and strengthen their heroes. It launched with 17 heroes and let players switch between first- and third-person perspectives. Those systems help explain why Blizzard’s initial plans focused on expanding the hero roster, maps and ways to shape builds. Blizzard’s Season 16 mode overview describes Stadium’s launch.

What did Blizzard originally plan for Stadium?
In Aaron Keller’s original Director’s Take on Stadium, Blizzard outlined content across the next two seasons. These were announced plans, not a guarantee that every feature would arrive as described.
- More heroes: Freja was slated to arrive with the Season 16 midseason patch, with additional heroes planned for each season.
- Payload Race: A new Stadium mode was planned alongside two new maps.
- Quests: Players would choose from randomly offered objectives at the start of a match and earn rewards for completing them.
- Build importer and exporter: Planned for Season 17, the feature was intended to let players create builds outside a match and select them in-game, including community-created builds.
- Unranked Stadium: Blizzard said it was investigating an Unranked version. The stated possibilities included cross-platform play for friends and a best-of-five format.
How did the roadmap change?
Blizzard’s later Weekly Recall: Journey to Season 17 revised the timing and sequence of several features. The post is a snapshot of plans at that point; it should not be read as confirmation of current delivery dates.

The later post changed the timetable and added details, but those season labels belong to that roadmap update. They are not evidence that the features remain part of Blizzard’s current expansion plans.
Is Blizzard still adding Stadium heroes and maps?
No new heroes or maps are currently planned for Stadium, according to the later policy stated by Aaron Keller, Overwatch game director, in Blizzard’s Director’s Take: Future Formats. Keller said: “With this in mind, while we’ll continue supporting Stadium with seasonal balance updates, rank resets, and rewards, we’re not planning on expanding Stadium with new Heroes or maps.”

- Fight for the future... together
- The world is your battlefield
- Games requires PlayStation Plus to play
That statement distinguishes ongoing support from expansion. Blizzard says seasonal balance changes, rank resets and rewards will continue; it does not say the mode is being discontinued. But the earlier plans for a growing hero roster and new maps should not be presented as the current policy.

In the same post, Blizzard reported Stadium Ranked and Stadium Unranked at about 3% of daily players each as of June 28. The year is not established in the retrieved official text, so the figures should be treated as a dated snapshot rather than a current measure of participation.
