Short answer: neither provider is automatically the better choice for a 24/7 YouTube stream. Choose a specific VPS plan whose advertised port capacity comfortably exceeds your stream’s bitrate, verify the region and traffic terms, and test the actual route to YouTube. OVHcloud advertises plan-specific public bandwidth up to 3 Gbps and a 99.9% SLA; Contabo documents port speeds from 200 Mbps to 1 Gbps on its Core and Performance VPS plans, with unlimited traffic subject to fair use. These are provider-published claims, not independent proof of sustained throughput or uninterrupted streaming.
If you want a stream to keep running without maintaining a VPS or a computer at home, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a video or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live.
OVHcloud VPS vs Contabo for YouTube streaming: what matters most?
For a stream that relays already encoded video, start with network capacity and route quality—not a generic claim of “unlimited” traffic. YouTube’s current H.264 guidance calls for 10 Mbps at 1080p/30 fps, 17 Mbps at 1080p/60 fps, 42 Mbps at 4K/30 fps, and 50 Mbps at 4K/60 fps. YouTube recommends leaving 20% network headroom. If you send a backup feed as well as a primary feed, YouTube says their combined bitrate should fit the available outbound bandwidth.
Those are YouTube ingest recommendations, not measurements of either VPS provider’s real-world sustained capacity. A port-speed ceiling also does not guarantee that a particular server can hold that rate continuously or reach YouTube ingest reliably. YouTube advises testing upload bitrate and notes that download speed may exceed upload speed; assess outbound capacity for the VPS you intend to use.

Translate your stream into a capacity target
- Record the stream’s resolution, frame rate, codec, and target bitrate. Use the recommendation for that codec rather than treating one codec’s bitrate as universal.
- Allow the recommended 20% headroom above the stream bitrate. Include the backup stream’s bitrate too if you run one.
- Compare that target with the exact plan’s advertised port speed, then verify sustained outbound performance and the route to YouTube before relying on it for a continuous stream.
For the full codec-specific table, consult YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate recommendations; for its headroom and bandwidth guidance, see YouTube’s streaming tips.
How the two VPS providers compare
| Decision point | OVHcloud VPS | Contabo VPS | What it means for a 24/7 stream |
|---|---|---|---|
| Advertised port bandwidth | Plan-specific public bandwidth; listed examples range from 500 Mbps to 3 Gbps. | Documentation lists 200–1,000 Mbps for Core plans and 500–1,000 Mbps for Performance plans. | Check the exact plan, not only the provider’s maximum. Neither figure establishes your server’s sustained end-to-end throughput. |
| Traffic terms | Unlimited traffic is advertised on the VPS page. | “Unlimited” traffic has no default cap, but is subject to fair use; exceptionally high or disruptive use can be throttled. | Read the policy for the plan and use case. Unlimited traffic does not mean unlimited transfer rate or guaranteed stream stability. |
| Compute and storage | Resources vary by plan; the current page advertises daily backups and NVMe storage for the new range. | Core VPS uses shared vCPUs and SSD; Performance VPS uses shared vCPUs on newer AMD EPYC generations and PCIe Gen 4 NVMe. | A relay of an already encoded feed differs from rendering or software-encoding video. Shared vCPU specifications alone do not establish encoding performance. |
| Continuity features | The VPS page advertises a 99.9% SLA, monitoring, daily backups, and DDoS mitigation. | Documentation describes automatic network-level DDoS protection, plan-dependent snapshots, and an Auto Backup add-on for Core and Performance plans. | These features are not proof that a particular live stream will remain uninterrupted. Backups protect data or configuration; they do not keep a feed on air by themselves. |
| Locations | Select an available datacentre or local zone that suits your audience and route to YouTube ingest. | Documentation lists locations in Europe, the UK, the US, Singapore, Japan, India, and Australia; confirm availability at checkout. | The best region depends on the actual route and your audience. Check the location offered to you rather than assuming all regions are available. |
| Price and term | Starting prices and configurations are market-specific. | Effective monthly rates may be tied to a 24-month subscription, with market-specific tax handling. | Compare the total checkout cost, renewal term, taxes, and backup add-ons for your country; do not treat an advertised starting rate as universal. |
Provider specifications and terms can change. Review the current OVHcloud VPS page, Contabo VPS documentation, and Contabo traffic policy for the plan and market you are considering.

Which VPS is better for a 24/7 YouTube livestream?
OVHcloud’s published figures may suit a buyer prioritizing a higher advertised port ceiling or a stated SLA, while Contabo’s documented plan ranges may suit someone comparing its specific Core or Performance options and locations. That is a shortlist, not a reliability verdict: the cited specifications do not show how either service performs for your encoder, region, ingest route, or sustained workload.
Make the decision against your actual setup:
- For bandwidth: match the selected plan’s port to the bitrate plus headroom, including any backup feed. Do not select solely by the largest advertised number.
- For encoding: if the VPS must render or encode, validate CPU and memory performance under your workload. Contabo explicitly describes shared vCPU resources; a vCPU count is not a guarantee of software-encoding capacity.
- For continuity: check the scope of any SLA and what monitoring, backups, snapshots, and recovery procedures actually cover. A backup is not a failover stream.
- For geography: compare the regions available at checkout and test the route from the chosen server to YouTube ingest. Audience proximity alone does not establish the best ingest route.
- For cost: compare checkout totals, term length, renewal, tax, and optional backup costs in your market.
How to evaluate a VPS before putting a stream on it
- Define the workload. Write down resolution, frame rate, codec, target bitrate, whether the VPS relays an encoded feed or encodes it, and whether a redundant feed runs simultaneously.
- Set the outbound target. Apply YouTube’s recommended network headroom and add the backup bitrate if applicable. Treat this as a minimum planning calculation, not a guarantee of performance.
- Choose a specific plan and region. Verify its advertised port speed, current availability, traffic policy, and total checkout terms. If sustained egress is critical, ask the provider about the use case or run a controlled test.
- Validate compute if encoding. Exercise the actual resolution, codec, frame rate, and content on the VPS. Do not infer adequate encoding performance from plan labels or shared vCPU counts.
- Plan recovery separately. Decide how the stream process restarts after a crash and how you will respond if the instance or region fails. Monitoring and stored backups do not, on their own, restore a live feed.
- Run a representative stream test. Include typical motion and audio, watch YouTube’s stream health, and check for dropped frames or connection instability over a meaningful period before relying on the setup continuously.
- Protect the stream key. Keep it out of public scripts, screenshots, repositories, and logs. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the streaming process.
- Recheck current terms. Before committing, verify price, renewal, taxes, available region, fair-use wording, and optional backup charges in your own checkout market.
Common problems and what to check
- Connection drops or YouTube reports an unstable stream: check outbound capacity rather than download speed, confirm the configured bitrate and headroom, and test the route from the selected region to YouTube ingest.
- Capacity appears adequate on paper but the stream still falters: advertised port speed is not a sustained-throughput result. Repeat a controlled egress test and ask the provider about policy or routing constraints.
- Encoding overload or skipped frames: determine whether the VPS is encoding or merely relaying. Reduce encoding load or move to a compute configuration proven by testing for the target workload; do not assume shared vCPUs can handle it.
- Stream does not resume after a process or instance restart: check that the streaming process is configured to restart and that its key and input files remain accessible. Snapshots and backups alone do not restart a live stream.
- Unexpected throttling or a policy concern: review Contabo’s fair-use terms if using its service, and contact the provider with the observed traffic pattern. “Unlimited” does not rule out throttling in exceptional or disruptive cases.
- Unexpected bill or renewal: inspect the checkout term, renewal price, taxes, and backup add-ons for the selected country rather than relying on a market-specific starting figure.
