A “live” indicator only confirms that a connection was made; it does not prove YouTube is receiving usable video. First compare the YouTube Live Control Room preview with playback on your Owncast page, then check that your encoder is sending to the correct destination and inspect Owncast’s transcoder logs. That narrows the failure to the YouTube ingest path, the source/encoder, or Owncast’s video processing.
Find where the video disappears
Check the same stream in two places: the preview in YouTube Live Control Room and your Owncast page. Owncast processes an incoming stream into HLS segments for its viewers; that processing path is separate from YouTube’s ingest. A connected source can still fail later during transcoding or segment output. This comparison is a diagnostic clue, not a guaranteed root-cause test.
- Owncast plays video; YouTube preview is black or absent: Check the encoder’s YouTube destination, selected stream, key, and output routing first.
- Both Owncast and YouTube are black: Check the source and encoder output, then Owncast’s transcoding path and logs.
- YouTube preview shows video, but the published YouTube player is black: The encoder is reaching YouTube with video, so investigate the stream’s YouTube status and publication workflow rather than changing Owncast settings blindly.
These symptoms do not identify a specific cause by themselves. The encoder configuration, preview, and logs are needed to diagnose an individual stream.
Verify the encoder’s destinations and keys
If your encoder sends to Owncast and YouTube, treat them as separate destinations with separate credentials. A live indicator for one destination does not establish that the other is correctly configured. In the encoder, verify which output is actually receiving the stream.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Owncast RTMP destination
Owncast accepts RTMP on TCP port 1935 by default; the port can be configured. Its stream key is accepted on the /live/ path. In an encoder with separate server and key fields, use the server address and key as separate values:
- Server:
rtmp://yourserver:1935/live(replace the host and port with your Owncast settings). - Stream key: the matching key from your Owncast configuration.
If the encoder has no separate key field, the full endpoint format is rtmp://yourserver:1935/live/<your-stream-key>. See Owncast’s broadcasting software setup guide.

YouTube destination
In YouTube Live Control Room, use the stream URL and key for the intended stream, and enter them in the encoder’s YouTube output. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address”; keep the key private. For a scheduled stream, YouTube’s workflow is to wait for the preview and then click Go live. See YouTube’s guide to managing live stream settings and its live streaming steps.
Use compatible video and audio settings
For Owncast’s documented compatibility, choose H.264 video and AAC audio. Owncast recommends a two-second keyframe interval; do not leave the interval on auto. Its guide also provides these example broadcast bitrates by resolution and frame rate:

| Resolution | Frame rate | Example video bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1920×1080 | 60 fps | 5000 kbps |
| 1920×1080 | 30 fps | 4500 kbps |
| 1280×720 | 60 fps | 4000 kbps |
| 1280×720 | 30 fps | 3000 kbps |
These are Owncast’s examples, not universal YouTube requirements or a guarantee that a particular server and connection can sustain the settings. Match the source to the Owncast server’s processing capacity and your available upload bandwidth. Owncast recognizes some formats beyond H.264 and AAC, but does not assure the same transcoding and playback compatibility for them. See the Owncast broadcasting guide.
Inspect Owncast logs and transcoding
- Check the Owncast application/server log around the time the image goes black for stream or video-processing errors.
- If the server log does not explain the failure, inspect
data/logs/transcoder.logaround the same timestamp. Owncast recommends this log for video-related problems. See Owncast troubleshooting. - Look for transcoder initialization or output errors, and confirm that the server’s FFmpeg build supports the encoder selected for the stream.
- If using hardware encoding, do not assume a codec is working merely because FFmpeg lists it. Owncast notes that the relevant drivers and hardware also need to be configured correctly. Its hardware-codec guide suggests FFmpeg 4.1.5 or newer; that is a suggestion, not a hard minimum. See Owncast’s encoding guide.
An individual 2021 Owncast issue report described an incoming connection followed by HLS output errors and a possible FFmpeg build problem with libx264. It illustrates why a successful connection is not proof of successful transcoding, but it does not diagnose a current setup. See the historical issue report.

Check RTMPS if YouTube never receives the feed
If the Live Control Room preview never appears and the encoder reports a connection or SSL error, verify the protocol and server URL against the values shown in Live Control Room. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts RTMP over TLS/SSL. Use it only if your encoder supports RTMPS, and copy the RTMPS URL from YouTube rather than guessing or modifying the address. For certain SSL errors, YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance says port 443 may help. See YouTube’s guide to encoder streaming issues.
If YouTube’s preview already shows video, an ingest protocol change is unlikely to be the first useful step; locate the issue at the later stage instead.

Common symptoms and next checks
| What you see | What to check next |
|---|---|
| Owncast page plays video, YouTube preview is black | Confirm the encoder’s YouTube output is enabled and uses the intended stream URL and key. |
| Owncast and YouTube both show black | Check the encoder’s source and output settings, then review Owncast’s server and transcoder logs. |
| Encoder connects, but Owncast playback fails | Look for transcoding or HLS output errors in the Owncast logs; a connection alone does not prove usable output. |
| YouTube preview never arrives and the encoder shows an SSL/connection error | Verify the exact YouTube URL and protocol, check RTMPS support in the encoder, and consult YouTube’s connection guidance about port 443 for certain SSL errors. |
| The encoder disconnects immediately after starting | Use Owncast’s troubleshooting guidance and compare the configured endpoint, port, path, and key with the destination you intend to reach. |
