Palworld is a survival-crafting game built around creatures called Pals, who can be collected, bred, fought alongside, and assigned jobs at your base. That combination gives it a distinctive progression loop, but it does not make every part of the adventure equally strong. In PC Gamer’s version 1.0 review, Andrea Shearon praised the collection, workforce management, breeding, and combat experimentation while criticizing the building, exploration, and presentation. Whether it is worth playing depends on which of those systems you most want from a survival game.
What kind of game is Palworld?
Palworld mixes open-world survival and crafting with monster collecting. Players fight, farm, build, and work alongside Pals, according to its Steam listing. Developer Pocketpair describes it as a monster-raising, open-world survival-craft game: players can meet, capture, raise, and battle Pals, put them to work, and explore.
The creatures are not just combat companions. The official PlayStation description highlights production, farming, factories and automation, dungeon exploration, breeding, and multiplayer activities including battling and trading. In practice, the game’s central appeal is the way Pals connect several parts of progression: collecting them can expand your options in a fight and at your base.
Is Palworld worth playing?
Palworld is most appealing if you want creature collection to feed directly into survival progression and base work, rather than sit apart as a separate collection activity. Its strongest case is the interplay between finding Pals, developing their roles, and putting them to use. Its weaker side, in Shearon’s assessment, is the world and the work of building and exploring it.

PC Gamer reviewer Andrea Shearon described the central trade-off this way: “There’s a push and pull between some of the things that matter most to me in survival crafting games, though I can’t deny how good Palworld’s creature collecting foundation is.” Her review praised the directness of assigning Pals to jobs, breeding and role specialization, and experimenting with them in combat. She criticized base building, a lackluster open world, mundane exploration, and the game’s presentation and humor. Those are her critical judgments, not claims that every player will weigh the same elements equally.
| What you care about | What the game offers | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Creature collection and progression | Capture, raise, breed, and specialize Pals, then use them in combat and at your base. | This is the clearest strength in Shearon’s review. |
| Survival and crafting | Open-world survival and crafting sit alongside fighting, farming, and building. | Expect survival systems and resource work to be part of the experience, not just creature collecting. |
| Base management and automation | Pals can support production, farming, factories, and automation. | Shearon found base building weaker than the creature-management foundation. |
| Exploration and world design | The game includes an open world and dungeon exploration. | Shearon criticized the world as lackluster and exploration as mundane. |
| Combat | Pals can battle alongside players, and the review praised experimentation with combat roles. | The appeal described in the review is experimentation, rather than a claim that combat is uniformly strong. |
| Tone | The game combines creature raising with deliberately irreverent treatment of labor, sacrifice, and poaching. | That humor and violence are part of its presentation; Shearon criticized the presentation and humor. |
| Solo or with friends | Steam lists single-player, online co-op, and cross-platform multiplayer; PlayStation describes multiplayer. | Check the relevant platform listing for the current details that apply to your setup. |
The review’s performance setup was an RTX 4080, AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D, and 64GB of RAM; those are Shearon’s review conditions, not an independent performance test here. PC Gamer also notes that the game is Steam Deck Verified.

What changed with the 1.0 release?
Pocketpair’s 1.0 announcement names new Pals and technologies, story-oriented missions, revised battle actions, and water-base construction among the additions. These features broaden the game’s systems, but their presence alone does not resolve the review’s criticism of building, exploration, or presentation.
The full release date differs between the two official-facing listings: Pocketpair’s announcement gives July 10, 2026, while Steam lists July 9, 2026. If the exact release date matters, note which listing you are using rather than treating the dates as a single undisputed entry.
