PAPERHEAD is a single-player first-person shooter with horror-adventure elements, set in a cardboard world where things have taken a grim turn. The comparison to “Paper Mario got trapped in DOOM” describes its contrast of cartoon-like visuals and violent shooter action; it is not an official connection to either franchise. Steam lists the game for October 9, 2026, just ahead of Halloween season.
What is PAPERHEAD?
Developed by Paperhead te4m and published by HypeTrain Digital, PAPERHEAD combines movement-focused first-person shooting with adventure-horror exploration. Steam describes it as “a mix of a fast-paced movement boomer shooter and an adventure horror game,” with a unique soundtrack. The premise sends players through an abandoned research facility to uncover a dark mystery in a world made of cardboard.

Steam Up: A Feast of Dim Sum by KTBG, Strategy Board Game | Buy on Amazon |
The visual contrast is central to the hook: the setting looks cute and handmade, while the game advertises shotgun combat and “cartoonish blood & gore.” Its store page sums up the unsettling idea with the question, “WHY WOULD CARDBOARD… BLEED?”
How does the combat and pencil mechanic work?
The magical pencil is both a weapon and an environmental tool. Steam gives drawing bombs and doors as examples of how it can change the world. The listing also describes a shotgun and other weapons, kicking explosive barrels, tossing enemies, and boot attacks. These are announced features from the store page, not impressions from hands-on play.

#1 Best Overall
- Steam Up: A Feast of Dim Sum is a competitive 2-5 player light-medium weight Dim Sum set collection and action management game offering a delicious cultural experience.
- At the beginning of the game, steamers, filled with different types of Dim Sum, are stacked and placed on a Turntable.
- Each player takes turns performing 2 different actions each round. Actions include gaining and spending food tokens to purchase Dim Sum in Steamers within their Feast Zone.
- Players may also play Fortune cards to benefit themselves or affect their opponents. Starting the 2nd round, a Fate card is revealed each round to trigger an event that may affect all players.
- The game ends when a specific number of Steamers is purchased or the Fate deck is emptied. Final scoring is then calculated. The player with the most Hearty Points wins and leaves the table with the fullest stomach!
That mix is what makes the Paper Mario-and-DOOM comparison useful but incomplete: the official description emphasizes both fast movement and horror exploration, while the pencil adds a world-altering mechanic beyond conventional weapon combat. It is a tonal and feature comparison, not evidence that the game plays like either series.
When does PAPERHEAD release on Steam?
Steam lists PAPERHEAD for October 9, 2026. In a July announcement, the developer said the date had moved from September 18 to October 9, citing more time for polish and fixes and a better release window. The October date supersedes the earlier one.
As of October 7, 2026, Steam still showed the game as not yet available. Availability, price, reviews, and performance can change at launch; the listing reviewed before release showed no user reviews.
Can you still get the free PAPERHEAD prologue?
The developer announced that the free prologue, PAPERHEAD EP.0, would stop being available to claim when its Steam page closed on September 24, 2026. The announcement says players who had already added it to their libraries would retain access. That is the developer’s stated policy; individual account access was not independently verified.

What are PAPERHEAD’s PC requirements?
Steam lists the following Windows requirements. The game’s minimum listing says Windows 7 64-bit or later, but Steam separately notes that its client has required Windows 10 or later since January 1, 2024; that client requirement is distinct from the game’s stated minimum OS.
| Requirement | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 7 64-bit or later | Windows 10 64-bit |
| Processor | 64-bit processor | 2.4 GHz quad-core processor or higher |
| Memory | 2 GB RAM | 4 GB RAM |
| Graphics | GeForce 9800GT or equivalent | GeForce GTX 460 or equivalent |
| DirectX | Version 9 | Version 11 |
| Storage | 2 GB available space | 3 GB available space |
These are the developer’s listed specifications on Steam, not independent performance results. The listing does not establish how the game performs on specific hardware.
What features and languages does the Steam listing include?
Steam lists single-player, Steam Achievements, Steam Cloud, and Family Sharing. It names 11 supported interface or subtitle languages: English, French, German, Spanish (Spain), Japanese, Korean, Polish, Russian, Simplified Chinese, Brazilian Portuguese, and Turkish. The page does not say that all 11 languages have full audio.
The store page’s mature-content notice from the developers is “Cartoonish blood & gore,” so the cute art direction should not be mistaken for an indication that the game is gore-free.
