Parallels promoted it as a performance improvement, but that does not mean every game runs faster—or smoothly—on every Mac. The practical result depends on the game’s requirements and the Mac’s hardware.
What Parallels Desktop 15 changed
Announced on August 13, 2019, Parallels Desktop 15 moved its graphics support to Apple Metal and added support for DirectX 11 alongside DirectX 10 and 9. Parallels described the change as improving graphics performance for Windows applications and games. That was the vendor’s product claim, not a general, independently controlled benchmark showing that games run faster than on native Windows or every other way of running Windows software on a Mac. Will DirectX 11 games run well?
Not necessarily. Parallels says most DirectX 11 games are demanding and that performance is closely tied to the Mac’s GPU, CPU, and hard disk. DirectX 11 support makes a compatible graphics path available; it is not a promise of a particular frame rate or smooth play. No general performance figure is established for all games and Mac configurations.
Parallels’ version 15 update notes mention work involving games such as FIFA 19, Fallout 4, Elite Dangerous, Prey (2017), Crysis 3, and Anno 1800. The notes show that these titles were relevant to updates, not that each will perform well on every Mac. They also record a fix for a Windows virtual machine crash after launching Cuphead. How to enable DirectX 11 after upgrading
Parallels’ support guidance says DirectX 11 support is included by default in Parallels Desktop 15 and later. If you upgrade from an older Parallels release, install the updated Parallels Tools in the Windows virtual machine so the new support is available. - Upgrade Parallels Desktop to version 15 or later.
- Start the Windows virtual machine and install or update Parallels Tools using Parallels’ Tools installation option for that virtual machine.
- Check the game’s graphics API, feature, anti-cheat, and hardware requirements. DirectX 11 support alone does not establish that a particular game is compatible.
What can prevent a game from working
Parallels’ current compatibility guidance—not a description of the exact 2019 launch state—warns that results vary by game and Mac. A game may fail or have limited functionality if it requires DirectX 12, specific graphics features, kernel-level anti-cheat, or hardware that the virtual machine does not support. Parallels also notes that some DirectX 12 games may run only with limited functionality. Parallels Desktop download and compatibility guidance and Parallels: playing Steam games on Mac
How to judge whether Parallels fits a particular game
Check the exact game and Mac configuration rather than relying on the DirectX 11 label alone. Useful questions include whether the game’s graphics API and required features are supported, whether its anti-cheat system works in a virtual machine, and whether the Mac’s GPU and CPU are adequate. For performance expectations, look for results measured on the same game and comparable hardware; the available Parallels product and support materials do not establish a controlled comparison with Boot Camp, native Mac versions, or other compatibility tools.
