Some parents are taking new portraits of their children at home and asking generative AI to give them a school-picture look. It may offer more control over the session, but available reporting does not establish how common the practice is or whether it saves families money overall.
How parents are making school-style photos with AI
In a September 29, 2026 report, Fast Company described TikTok creator Carlie Bond photographing her three school-age children against a plain backdrop, then asking ChatGPT: “Keep them exactly the same but make it look like a school picture.” The tool added a conventional gradient background. Bond captioned the post, “So we took our own and let my good friend Chat help us out.”
That is one reported example, not evidence of how many families are doing this or what results parents typically get. Fast Company also reported that some commenters felt AI changed a child’s appearance despite instructions to preserve it. Those comments are not a controlled assessment of image-editing accuracy.
A new home portrait is not the same as altering a proof
The reported DIY approach starts with a new photo taken by a parent. Fast Company separately described people uploading a school photographer’s watermarked proof and asking AI to remove the watermark rather than buying the image. These are different practices: a photographer’s proof may be subject to purchase and usage terms that do not apply in the same way to a parent’s own new photo. Don’t treat watermark removal as a harmless shortcut; check the photographer’s terms or ask the rights holder about a specific image.

How much do school photos cost?
There is no single established price in the reporting. Fast Company cited Capturely, a company that offers at-home digital photography sessions, as estimating in 2026 that an average family spends $25–$60 on a print package, while photos of one child range from $15–$125. The article does not state a sampling method, so these are company-reported ranges, not a representative national survey.
In a December 2025 account for The Atlantic, Annie Midori Atherton said packages she encountered ranged from $28 at the low end to more than $100 at the high end. She also noted that a single digital download in packages she had seen could cost $65 without physical prints. That is one writer’s reported experience, not an industry-wide price measure.

Making a portrait at home does not automatically save the full price of a package. A fair comparison would include any printing costs, the time needed to take and edit photos, the AI service’s access or subscription terms, and what the family values in the school’s offering. The cited sources do not provide a measured average saving.
What to weigh before trying it
A DIY portrait may be appealing if you want to choose the timing, pose, and number of retakes. A school package may include physical prints or class and group photos that a home portrait does not. Neither option is shown by the available reporting to produce more faithful portraits in general, so consider whether the finished image still looks like your child.

Taking a portrait at home
A plain backdrop is optional, but it can make it easier to create the simple background used in the reported example. Set up near even light, frame your child at the distance and angle you want, and take a few alternatives before choosing one. If you use AI to change the background or styling, compare the result with the original rather than assuming the child’s appearance was preserved.
What to know before uploading a child’s photo to ChatGPT
OpenAI’s current data-controls guidance says users can turn off “Improve the model for everyone.” New conversations after that setting is off are not used to train models, though they can remain in chat history. Temporary Chats are not used to improve models while temporary, but may be retained for up to 30 days for safety purposes. Temporary Chat therefore does not mean immediate deletion.

These details apply to ChatGPT, not every AI service, and settings or features can change. Check the controls in your own account before uploading a child’s identifiable image. The guidance describes particular controls and retention conditions; it is not a promise that no person or system can ever process an upload.
There is also broader context for being thoughtful about children’s images online. Human Rights Watch reported on July 30, 2026 that Australia’s eSafety Commissioner received over 100 reports between January and March 2026 about anonymous accounts misusing images taken from official school websites and social accounts. HRW said some material involved AI-generated sexualized deepfakes, face swaps, or other manipulation. That reporting concerns publicly available Australian school imagery; it does not show that a parent’s private AI upload has the same exposure or outcome.

Who has rights to the photo?
OpenAI’s Terms of Use say users are responsible for content they submit and must have the rights, licenses, and permissions needed to provide it. They also say that, as between the user and OpenAI and to the extent permitted by law, the user retains rights in input. Those terms do not settle the rights attached to every school portrait, photographer’s proof, or image of a child. For a particular proof, check the photographer’s purchase and usage terms or ask the rights holder.
