A gaming PC needs a compatible processor (CPU), motherboard, memory (RAM), storage, power supply (PSU), case, and—if you want to play demanding modern games—a discrete graphics card (GPU). You also need suitable CPU cooling and case airflow. The right parts depend on your budget, target games and performance, and preferred case size, so check compatibility by exact model before ordering.
Which parts does a gaming PC need?
CPU (processor)
The CPU runs game and system instructions. Choose it together with the motherboard: the board must have the correct socket and explicitly support the exact processor. Check whether a BIOS update is required for that CPU.
Motherboard
The motherboard connects the processor, memory, graphics card, storage, and other devices. Beyond CPU support, check its memory type, form factor, expansion slots, storage connections, and the headers and connectivity you need. Intel’s gaming PC build guide describes the graphics card as plugging into the motherboard’s PCIe x16 slot and notes that the CPU and GPU both affect in-game frame rate.
GPU (graphics card)
A discrete GPU is normally central to rendering performance in demanding modern games. Choose one based on the games, resolution, graphics settings, and frame rate you’re targeting; there is no universally right GPU without those requirements. Confirm that its interface and power connections work with the rest of the build.

RAM (system memory)
Choose memory supported by both the motherboard and processor. Verify the memory generation and the board’s supported configuration. How much you need depends on the games and other workloads; without a defined game set and use case, a single capacity cannot be called sufficient for everyone.
Storage
An SSD is a common choice for the operating system and games. Match the drive’s interface and form factor to the motherboard’s available M.2 slots or SATA ports, and choose capacity to suit your game library and budget.

PSU (power supply)
The PSU must provide enough power for the selected components and have the required connectors. Intel describes PSU selection as a critical step in its build guide. Base the choice on the actual CPU and GPU specifications and manufacturer recommendations rather than a rough wattage rule; check connector requirements for the exact graphics card and PSU models.
Case, cooling, and airflow
The case must support the motherboard’s form factor and physically fit the components. Check its published maximum GPU length, CPU cooler height, radiator and fan support if relevant, and PSU fit. MSI’s compatibility guidance calls out socket alignment, graphics-card clearance, and cooler height as practical checks. Select a CPU cooler appropriate for the processor and case, and check the exact processor’s retail package to see whether a cooler is included.

Will these PC parts work together?
Check the exact part models, not just product categories. A parts compatibility tool can help flag problems, but it cannot replace checking manufacturer specifications—especially CPU support and BIOS requirements.
- Match CPU and motherboard. Confirm the socket and check the motherboard maker’s supported CPU list for the exact processor. Verify any BIOS version requirement.
- Check memory support. Confirm the RAM generation and configuration are supported by both the motherboard and CPU.
- Check case and board fit. Make sure the case supports the motherboard’s form factor and has the clearances required by your components.
- Compare GPU dimensions. Check the graphics card’s exact length against the case’s published GPU clearance. MSI recommends measuring the card and comparing it with the case clearance in its compatibility guide.
- Verify cooler fit. Compare air-cooler height or radiator dimensions with the case specifications, and check for any relevant memory-clearance limits.
- Confirm PSU capacity and connectors. Use the component manufacturers’ recommendations for your CPU and GPU, then verify that the PSU has the required connectors for the exact parts.
- Match storage to the board. Confirm the drive uses an available M.2 slot or SATA connection, and that the board has enough connections for the drives you plan to install.
- Review the complete list. Run the parts through a compatibility tool, then investigate warnings and confirm important details in the manufacturers’ documentation.
What else might you need?
A monitor, keyboard, mouse, and headset may be necessary to use the PC, depending on what you already own. They are peripherals, not internal build components. You may also need an operating system; neither is part of the internal hardware checklist.

Start with your budget and the games and performance you want, then select components as a compatible system rather than in isolation. These factors shape the choice:
- Target resolution, frame rate, games, and graphics settings
- CPU and GPU balance for the intended use
- Memory and storage capacity for your games and other workloads
- Motherboard connectivity and upgrade options
- Case size, component clearance, cooling, noise, and power needs
- Local stock and pricing
Exact compatibility, prices, and availability vary by model and region. Without a stated budget, location, performance target, and form factor, specific models or a universal CPU-to-GPU balance would be premature.
