Monk/Martial Artist and Ranger/Deadeye recur among the strongest recommendations in the available lists; Huntress/Spirit Walker is another notable option. If you are new and want a speed-focused starting point, the Patch 0.5 editorial guide describes Ranger as relatively easy to play. Monk is a high-ranking choice, but that guide says it can be less forgiving for beginners.
These recommendations are based on third-party lists for patches 0.5, 0.5.4, and 0.5.4b—not a verified ranking for the later 0.5.5 event update reported on September 5, 2026. Treat them as a dated guide to promising archetypes, not a definitive current-patch leaderboard.

Best class and build picks by goal
| Pick | Best fit | What the available evidence supports | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monk / Martial Artist | Players drawn to a high-performing, fast-clearing archetype who are comfortable learning its playstyle. | PathofExile.gg places Monk in S tier in its Patch 0.5 editorial list. PoE2 Vault ranks Martial Artist first among 13 ascendancies in its public-build sample. PoE2 Hub includes a Martial Artist setup using Hollow Focus and Tempest Bell among its S-tier examples. | The Monk recommendation is described as less forgiving for a new player. A high popularity or editorial tier does not establish a universal power advantage. |
| Ranger / Deadeye | Players prioritizing a speed-oriented option and a relatively straightforward start. | PathofExile.gg places Ranger in S tier and describes it as a relatively easy, speed-focused choice, with Deadeye a strong ascendancy. PoE2 Hub also lists a Deadeye Twister/Whirling Slash setup among its S-tier examples. | These are guide judgments and build examples, not controlled comparisons of clear speed, damage, or survivability. |
| Huntress / Spirit Walker | Players who want a strong alternative to the two most frequently highlighted choices. | PoE2 Vault ranks Spirit Walker third by representation in its sample. PoE2 Hub includes a Spirit Walker Twister/Whirling Slash setup among its S-tier examples. | Representation and a guide’s tier label do not prove that this option is best for a particular activity or budget. |
| Gemling Legionnaire | Players considering a widely represented ascendancy beyond the top three picks. | PoE2 Vault ranks it second by representation in its public-build sample. | The cited evidence establishes usage, not that it is easier, stronger, cheaper, or more viable in a specific game mode. |
The Patch 0.5 PathofExile.gg class list also places Sorceress and Druid in A tier, Witch and Warrior in B tier, and Mercenary in C tier. Those labels are that page’s editorial assessment; they are not measured win-rate categories.
What the tier lists actually measure
A tier label can mean different things from one site to another. Compare the underlying method before using a ranking to choose a character:
#1 Best Overall
- Editorial class tiers: PathofExile.gg’s June 22 Patch 0.5 page gives class-level tiers and qualitative judgments, including its comments on Monk performance and Ranger speed. It does not present a measured win-rate table.
- Public-build representation: PoE2 Vault says its page, refreshed August 22, 2026, sampled 124,239 public builds across 13 ascendancies. It reports Martial Artist at 19.9% usage, Gemling Legionnaire at 16.2%, and Spirit Walker at 11.5%. These are the site’s representation figures, not a census of all players or a win-rate study.
- A multi-factor build synthesis: PoE2 Hub says its ranking combines endgame strength, league-start viability, meta presence, community votes, poe.ninja pick rates, and guide consensus. It reports 967 ratings from 62 voters for RankedMeta as of July 2026. Its listed builds are examples from that synthesis, not results from an independent trial.
- Guide completeness: POE2Builds’ Patch 0.5.4 list contains 85 builds: 16 S tier, 23 A tier, and 46 B tier. The site explicitly says it ranks guide completeness—including progression coverage, a positioned passive tree, and imported gear—not win rate, and says it lacks win-rate and ladder data. An S-tier entry there means a more complete guide, not a proven top-performing build.
Because these methods answer different questions, popularity can help show which builds are widely represented, while an editorial ranking can offer a recommendation. Neither alone tells you which build will perform best for your character, budget, or activity.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose for your own playstyle
Before committing, weigh the factors that the published lists do not score on a comparable numerical scale:
- Campaign and league start: Look for a progression plan that works before endgame gear is available, rather than judging only by a finished build.
- Clear speed and bossing: Fast area clearing and strong single-target damage are different strengths. Decide which matters more for the content you expect to play.
- Survivability and execution: Consider how much room the build leaves for mistakes and how demanding its rotation or button setup feels. The available rankings do not provide comparable scores for these traits.
- Gear and currency: Check whether a guide depends on specific equipment or expensive upgrades. The cited rankings do not establish a comparable cost for the listed options.
- Game mode: Trade availability can change how practical a gear-dependent setup is compared with solo self-found play. Softcore and Hardcore also put different weight on risk tolerance and survival.
For a more detailed decision, inspect a guide’s progression, passive tree, and equipment assumptions. PathofExile.gg lists an offline Path of Building planner that can help examine a passive tree and build configuration after you have chosen an archetype.
How current are these recommendations?
The tier-list evidence here dates to patches 0.5, 0.5.4, or 0.5.4b. PathofExile.gg’s home page lists a “Path of Exile 2: 0.5.5 Patch Notes – Forbidden Rites Event League” item dated September 5, 2026. That establishes a later event update was reported, but the available evidence does not establish the contents of corresponding official balance notes or whether class balance changed. Do not read the older lists as a verified 0.5.5 tier list.
