There is no objectively proven best class in Path of Exile 2. In the inspected base-class tier list, Monk and Ranger share the top S tier. That is an editorial snapshot, not a measured win-rate or a guarantee that either will outperform every other class. For the current patch context, use it as a starting point: lean Ranger for a relatively approachable, fast league start, or Monk if you want strong movement, area damage and crowd control and are willing to learn its playstyle.
Best class in Path of Exile 2: the short ranking
Pathofexile.gg places Monk and Ranger in S tier among base classes. Its descriptions favor Monk for mapping, movement, area damage and crowd control, while characterizing Ranger as fast and relatively approachable for a league start. The site emphasizes Deadeye for projectile speed and bossing. These are the publisher’s editorial assessments, not results from controlled class testing or player-performance telemetry. Choose between them by the kind of play you want, not just the shared tier label. A build’s results depend on its setup, your playstyle and how well you understand its strengths and weaknesses.
Base-class tiers and ascendancy tiers are different rankings
A base-class list compares starting classes; an ascendancy list compares their specialized progression choices. They are not interchangeable, and their placements should not be merged into a single “best class” score.

RankedMeta’s August 28, 2026 ascendancy board puts Martial Artist, Disciple of Varashta, Spirit Walker and Oracle in S tier. The board labels these placements an expert-seeded baseline with no player votes yet; it is therefore not evidence of player consensus. Its methodology also distinguishes league-start comfort from pinnacle-boss power. View RankedMeta’s ascendancy board.
The two lists answer different questions: one offers a broad editorial view of base classes and ascendancies, while the other is an ascendancy-only baseline with a stated voting limitation. Check what a ranking is comparing and how it was produced before using its S tier as a reason to commit to a character.

How to choose for your goal
Tier labels can hide the trade-offs that matter to an individual player. Compare a specific class and build against the activities you care about:
- League start and campaign comfort: Consider how readily the build can progress with accessible gear.
- Mapping and clear speed: Look for movement and area coverage that suit the way you want to clear groups.
- Boss damage: Separate single-target damage from clear speed, and consider how reliably the build can deliver damage against a boss.
- Survivability: Think about defenses, recovery, crowd control and how much room the build gives you to make mistakes.
- Gear or currency pressure: Check whether the build depends on specific equipment or substantial investment.
- Execution complexity: Account for rotations, timing, positioning and the game knowledge needed to use the build effectively.
These are decision criteria, not published comparative scores for Monk and Ranger. The cited lists do not establish controlled performance results for either class across those measures.

How current is this ranking?
Grinding Gear Games’ official forum lists Patch 0.5.5d, posted September 27, 2026, as the latest official patch located for this comparison. Its notes include bug fixes, not a class ranking; one fix concerns Manifest Weapon being unable to attack enemies while a Talisman was equipped. Check the official patch notes.
A separate September 2026 guide labels its league-start list Forbidden Rites 0.5.5 and says it was updated September 13, but its detailed placements are not used here. An August 10, 2026 guide records eight base classes and 22 ascendancies for its Patch 0.5 / Runes of Aldur snapshot. These dates and labels show why a tier list needs a patch and scope: placements can change, and an older snapshot should not be treated as a current guarantee.

No inspected source provides defensible comparative win rates or controlled damage results for classes. The rankings are useful as opinions about what to consider, not proof that one class performs best for all players or content.
