The available descriptions point to clear starting styles, from the Warrior’s heavy melee to the Sorceress’s elemental spells, but class identity is not necessarily an exclusive list of skills. This is a practical reference-based breakdown, not a report of personal gameplay testing.
Which Path of Exile 2 class should you choose?
Start with the kind of combat you want to repeat: close-range weapon hits, elemental spells, ranged crossbow attacks, spear skirmishing, or shapeshifting. Then consider how much setup you enjoy and whether a class’s ascendancy direction appeals to you. The unofficial class guide frames these as useful choice factors alongside skill family, defenses, and resource use; it does not establish a universal winner or a lasting balance ranking.
- Choose Warrior if heavy melee, big weapons, slams, and an armor-focused bruiser direction sound appealing.
- Choose Sorceress if you want an Intelligence-oriented elemental spellcaster.
- Choose Mercenary if crossbow combat, ammunition options, and grenades are the draw.
- Choose Huntress if a Dexterity-oriented spear-and-buckler skirmisher is your preferred starting point.
- Choose Druid if you want a Strength/Intelligence shapeshifter with Bear, Wolf, and Wyvern forms.
These are broad orientations, not exhaustive limits on what a character can build. The descriptions below reflect an unofficial reference marked 0.5.x; they are not hands-on findings or a claim that every detail is current for every patch.
How the classes differ
Warrior: heavy close-range melee
The Warrior is described as a strength-oriented bruiser built around big weapons, slams, and armor. GGG’s December 2024 Early Access announcement named Titan and Warbringer among the Warrior’s launch ascendancies; the later 0.5.x reference also lists Smith of Kitava. This is the clearest starting fit if you want a weighty melee identity, though the descriptions alone do not establish which Warrior setup is strongest.

Sorceress: elemental spellcasting
The Sorceress is characterized as an Intelligence-based elemental spellcaster. Stormweaver and Chronomancer were listed for the class in the launch announcement, while the 0.5.x reference also lists Disciple of Varashta. Choose this direction if casting spells is more appealing than building around a physical weapon style.
Mercenary: crossbow and ammunition
The Mercenary is described as a Strength/Dexterity hybrid who fights with a crossbow, ammunition types, and grenades. Witchhunter and Gemling Legionnaire were named in the launch roster; Tactician appears in the later reference. Its defining starting point is ranged crossbow combat, with ammunition choice and grenades part of the described toolkit.

Huntress: spear-and-buckler skirmishing
The Huntress is a Dexterity-oriented spear-and-buckler skirmisher. The 0.5.x reference lists Amazon, Ritualist, and Spirit Walker as ascendancies. That gives a useful high-level picture of its weapon identity, but the available descriptions do not justify more detailed claims about its exact defenses, resource engine, or workload.
Druid: shapeshifting
The Druid is presented as a Strength/Intelligence shapeshifter with Bear, Wolf, and Wyvern forms; Shaman and Oracle are listed as its ascendancies in the 0.5.x reference. Pick it if changing form is central to the character fantasy you want. The cited class summary does not provide enough detail to rank its forms or explain their full combat mechanics.

Does your class lock you into its signature skills?
Not necessarily. The unofficial 0.5.4 guide says another class can usually use the same skill if it meets the skill’s requirements and weapon rules. Treat that as a general guide-level summary rather than an official guarantee for every skill. Class choice still matters: it determines your starting position and access to class-specific ascendancy mechanics, so a shared skill does not make every class equivalent.
How to make the choice without a misleading tier list
- Pick a skill family and range. Decide whether you want spells, crossbow attacks, spear combat, heavy melee, shapeshifting, or another supported direction.
- Check the class identity. Use the snapshots above to see whether the broad weapon or transformation theme matches what you want to play.
- Think about setup. The guide’s decision framework includes tolerance for mechanical setup, such as combos, weapon or ammunition changes, minion management, or transformation. The available class descriptions do not substantiate a workload comparison for every class, so confirm details in current skill and ascendancy descriptions before committing.
- Consider defenses and resources only where details are established. The guide recommends weighing a build’s defensive model and resource engine, but the class snapshots here do not provide enough consistent detail to compare each class on armor, avoidance, recovery, mana, life, charges, or flasks.
- Ignore rankings without a patch context. Balance can change. A broad class identity is more durable guidance than an uncited claim that one class is “best.”
Which roster are you looking at?
Class counts vary by development point. GGG’s December 4, 2024 announcement listed 6 character classes for the launch of Early Access, with two ascendancies for each. A separate, unofficial PoE2 Tools reference labeled 0.5.x lists 8 base classes and 22 ascendancies. These figures describe different stages and sources; the later count is not an official GGG statistic, and the material available here does not establish the fully current official roster as of October 8, 2026.

That distinction matters when comparing guides: a launch-era list is not a complete later roster, while an unofficial version label is not proof of an official current count. Check a current GGG announcement for roster or availability changes before relying on either as definitive.

PC Gamer reported on August 25, 2026 that Path of Exile 2 was planned to leave Early Access and become free-to-play on December 11, 2026, with Duelist and swords expected for 1.0. December 11 was still a future target on October 8, 2026, so it should not be read as a completed release or an official confirmation.
