Path of Exile 2 Early Access Review: Buy Now or Wait for Free-to-Play?

Path of Exile 2 is already a deep, demanding action RPG, but its Early Access balance and endgame are still moving. Here is who should buy now and who should wait for the planned free-to-play launch.

Path of Exile 2 is worth buying in Early Access only if you actively want an evolving action RPG now. The combat, boss encounters, co-op and build experimentation are already substantial, but the game is unfinished and balance, progression and endgame pacing can change between updates. Steam lists a $29.99 entry Supporter Pack (captured September 30, 2026), while Grinding Gear Games says the finished game will be free-to-play. Steam currently lists December 11, 2026 as the planned Early Access exit date; that is a target, not a guarantee.

What is actually in Early Access?

The current Early Access version is described by Grinding Gear Games as a four-act campaign with a substantial endgame. The planned full release adds two more acts, additional classes, skills, items, areas, bosses and monsters.

The advertised overall scope is much larger than the current campaign alone:

Advertised feature Published scope How to read it
Campaign Six acts The Early Access build currently presents four acts; two are planned for the full version.
Environments 100 Grinding Gear Games product material describes the overall game, not a completed Early Access checklist.
Monsters 600 Advertised total for the full game.
Bosses 100 A boss is advertised for every campaign area; the total includes the wider game.
Endgame More than 100 maps Endgame exists now, but its rewards, density and pacing remain version-dependent.

Those figures are developer-published product claims rather than an independent completion audit. They establish the intended scale, not a promise that every listed element is present or final in the current build.

Is Path of Exile 2 Early Access worth buying now?

Your tolerance for unfinished software is the deciding factor. The entry Supporter Pack is listed at $29.99, with higher tiers at $59.99 and $99.99 on the Steam page captured September 30, 2026. Grinding Gear Games says Path of Exile 2 will be free-to-play after Early Access.

Buy during Early Access if you… Wait if you…
Want to play the available campaign and endgame immediately. Prefer to begin with the complete six-act campaign.
Enjoy testing builds and adapting to balance patches. Dislike wipes, respec changes, nerfs or unfinished systems.
Want to participate in development before the free launch. Do not want to pay before the planned free-to-play release.
Accept that loot, economy and endgame value may change. Want a stable long-term build guide or settled meta.

The purchase is best understood as paid access to a changing game, not a discount on a finished product. If the conditions in the right-hand column describe you, waiting is the more rational value choice.

How deep are the builds?

Build experimentation is Path of Exile 2’s central attraction. Grinding Gear Games advertises:

  • 12 character classes, each with three Ascendancy specialisations.
  • 240 active Skill Gems and 200 Support Gems.
  • 1,500 passive skills, including dual specialisation.
  • 700 equipment base types.

Class selection is therefore a starting template rather than a complete character definition. Skills, supports, passive choices and equipment determine how a character plays, and cross-class experimentation is part of the design. The meaningful question is not simply whether there are 12 classes; it is whether you can understand the interactions, afford to change direction and execute the build reliably.

That last point is especially important in Early Access. A build that feels excellent on one patch can lose damage, defenses or clear speed after a balance pass. Treat tier lists and “best class” claims as dated recommendations, not permanent truths.

Is Path of Exile 2 harder than Diablo?

There is no authoritative apples-to-apples difficulty test, so “harder” depends on what you find difficult. Path of Exile 2 demands more from players who are learning interconnected skills, supports, passives, equipment and resistances at the same time. Its boss encounters also emphasize reading attacks, positioning and deliberate timing rather than simply overpowering every fight.

A Diablo player may therefore find the onboarding, build planning and recovery from a bad choice less forgiving, even if individual encounters vary. Players who enjoy experimenting and learning mechanics will often experience that friction as depth; players seeking a fast, low-maintenance seasonal loop may experience it as homework.

Which class should you start with?

There is no defensible, patch-independent “best” class. The game director has described balance as a matter of balancing every individual skill against every other skill, so class power can move when skills or systems change.

Choose by preferred combat loop

  • Close-range player: choose the current character-select option whose starting skills and equipment support direct melee engagement.
  • Ranged player: favor the option built around distance, aiming and mobility.
  • Spell-focused player: choose the option whose early skills let you manage resource costs and battlefield control.
  • Experimenter: pick a class whose starting position gives access to the passive and gem combinations you want to test, then expect to revise it as patches arrive.

For a first character, prioritize a clear early-game skill, dependable defenses and a build guide dated for your exact patch. Do not choose solely from an old tier list or assume the class with the highest damage in a previous league remains strongest.

PC or console?

Both platforms use the same broad game ecosystem, but the practical experience differs.

Consideration PC Xbox Series X|S / PlayStation 5
Distribution Standalone client, Steam and Epic Games Store. Native console releases.
Input Mouse-and-keyboard precision plus controller support. Controller-first play.
Local multiplayer Less convenient for a shared sofa setup. Couch co-op is a stated console priority.
Account features PC community tools and trading resources are generally easier to access while playing. Cross-play and cross-progression are supported as console priorities; account linking and platform rules still apply.
Hardware Performance depends on your CPU, GPU, memory and settings. Fixed hardware simplifies setup, but you have fewer graphics options.

Grinding Gear Games said console players should feel part of the same community and confirmed cross-play, cross-progression and couch co-op as priorities. The company’s launch FAQ listed macOS as unavailable at Early Access launch; availability may have changed since that original announcement, so Mac users should verify the current client before purchasing.

Why reviews can age quickly

Steam labels the game Early Access and warns that it is incomplete and may change. Grinding Gear Games has already documented adjustments to map resistance penalties, chaos-damage scaling, monster critical damage, Breach density, freeze buildup and individual skill power.

Consequently, claims about loot, economy, difficulty, endgame longevity or class rankings need a patch and date attached. A positive review of the combat and build framework is more durable than a claim that a particular skill is currently dominant. Expect guides, prices and recommended routes to need revision.

Verdict

Path of Exile 2 already offers an unusually broad build system, weighty combat, memorable bosses, co-op and a meaningful endgame. It is a strong Early Access purchase for players who want to play before launch and are comfortable with change. It is not the right purchase for anyone seeking the finished six-act game, a settled economy or a guaranteed final balance. Since the eventual release is planned to be free-to-play, waiting costs patience rather than an unavoidable purchase price.
