Path of Exile 2 Monk Leveling Build Guide: Patch 0.5.5 Routes and What’s Verified

Patch scope: This guide distinguishes community Monk leveling routes labeled 0.5.5 from mechanics verified in Grinding Gear Games’ official 0.3.0 notes. The available evidence does not confirm the current live patch or provide enough detail to prescribe an exact gem-by-gem or passive-tree progression. For a route intended to work on your client, check its patch label and current in-game gem and skill details before committing.

Which Monk leveling build should you follow?

Two campaign approaches surfaced with 0.5.5 labels: a Glacial Cascade Monk guide from Mobalytics and a Whirling Assault Martial Artist guide from Exile Codex. Their listings establish that the routes exist, but not their exact skill setups, comparative performance, or whether every instruction remains valid on the current live patch.

  • Glacial Cascade: a community guide is listed as a 0.5.5 Monk campaign build. The available listing does not verify its gem route, supports, gear, or boss performance. Mobalytics guide listing
  • Whirling Assault: a community guide is listed as a 0.5.5 Martial Artist campaign build. Its listing says gem, support, and gear decisions are tied to quests or bosses, but the exact instructions and performance are not verified here. Exile Codex guide listing

These are options to investigate, not a tested ranking. Choose a route only after confirming that its patch label matches your game and that its listed skills and supports are available to your character.

Check the patch before copying a build

Patch version matters for a leveling guide: Grinding Gear Games’ official 0.3.0 notes document changes to Monk-relevant skills and support gems, while search listings also surfaced Monk campaign guides labeled 0.5.5 and an older Game8 Cold Lightning build for patch 0.3 covering Acts 1–3. Those listings do not establish which patch is live now. Official Path of Exile 2 patch notes forum

Before following any guide, check its stated patch, the date it was updated, and whether its skill and support names match your current client. Do not treat a guide marked 0.3 as interchangeable with one marked 0.5.5.

What the official 0.3.0 notes confirm about Monk skills

In its 0.3.0 content update notes, Grinding Gear Games introduced Hollow Palm Technique near the Monk starting location. The notes say this keystone allows quarterstaff attacks while unarmed and grants those attacks additional benefits while used unarmed. They also say Killing Palm, Staggering Palm, Shattering Palm, Hand of Chayula, and Frozen Locus damage became based on the equipped quarterstaff, and that these palm skills could no longer be used without a quarterstaff by default. These statements describe patch 0.3.0; they do not confirm the current behavior. Grinding Gear Games: Early Access Patch Notes — Content Update 0.3.0

The same notes describe a support-gem overhaul: the restriction against using the same support type more than once per character was removed, and many supports gained multiple tiers with changing stats or effects. Because these details are tied to 0.3.0, verify later patch notes and your current client before planning around them.

How to evaluate a campaign route

The surfaced guide listings do not provide enough evidence to declare Glacial Cascade or Whirling Assault the best Monk leveling build. Compare the full guides on the points that determine how they will feel and how costly they are to follow:

  • Campaign coverage: Does the guide give a progression from the early game, or assume that key skills are already available?
  • Boss handling: Does it explain a single-target setup for bosses as well as its general campaign skill?
  • Complexity: Does the route rely on combos or frequent skill changes that you are comfortable executing?
  • Weapon and gear demands: Does it specify a weapon or other equipment you can reasonably obtain while leveling?
  • Patch and respec assumptions: Is the guide current for your client, and does it require passive-tree changes as you progress?
  • Character context: Is it written for a first character or for a later character with access to shared equipment?

Do not assume a build is fast, boss-strong, or inexpensive to respec merely from its title or search listing; those comparisons are not established by the available guide summaries.

Use 0.3.0 advice as dated context, not a current build planner

The official 0.3.0 notes explain why a guide written for that update may discuss unarmed quarterstaff attacks, palm-skill weapon scaling, or multiple tiers of support gems. They are useful for understanding the dated advice, but do not supply current unlock levels, support combinations, passive-tree milestones, or boss-by-boss equipment steps. For a practical route, use a guide that shows its patch and confirm each skill, support, and gear instruction in the game.

Grinding Gear Games described the aim of the 0.3.0 changes this way: “Our goal is to increase build diversity by making many more skills and character archetypes viable into the endgame.” That is the stated design goal for that update, not evidence that a particular Monk leveling route performs best.
