Path of Exile 2: Weapon Set Points, Explained

Weapon Set points let you assign passive nodes to different weapon sets, but they are not a separate pool of free power. Learn how their Skill Point accounting works and when separate passive focuses may help.

Weapon Set points let you assign different passive-tree nodes to your character’s two weapon sets, so each can support a different skill or role. They are not a separate pool of free power: Grinding Gear Games says quests that grant Weapon Set points also grant Skill Points, and allocating more passives to the more-developed set can use ordinary Skill Points too.

How do Weapon Set points work?

Weapon Set points are part of passive allocation for your two weapon sets. They let you specialize the passives associated with each set rather than treating both sets as identical. This can be useful when the sets support different skills or jobs, but the value depends on your build and the points needed for each allocation.

Keep general passives in the shared allocation and consider set-specific passives when they directly support the skills or role assigned to that set. Do not assume that having a second weapon set automatically improves a character that only uses one functional setup.

Do Weapon Set points use regular Skill Points?

Yes, the point accounting connects Weapon Set allocation with ordinary Skill Points. In an official forum reply, Grinding Gear Games staff member Jadian said, “This is intentional,” responding to a player who found both Weapon Set points and unspent Skill Points being consumed while allocating passives.

The reply explains that quests awarding Weapon Set points also award Skill Points. You are not required to use those points for both weapon sets; you can spend them as ordinary Skill Points instead. When allocating into the set with more allocated passives, further points can consume Skill Points. If the other set has fewer allocated nodes, extra Skill Points are not needed until the two allocations are equal.

Allocation situation What the official explanation says
Quest grants Weapon Set points The quest also grants Skill Points; the points may be spent as ordinary Skill Points instead of being allocated to both sets.
You add passives to the set with more allocated nodes Further allocation to that set can consume ordinary Skill Points.
One set has fewer allocated nodes Extra Skill Points are not needed for the more-developed set until the allocations are equal.

In practical terms, think of the two weapon-specific paths as different assignments for points your character has earned, not as two independent bonuses that automatically expand your total build budget.

When should I use separate weapon-set passives?

Consider separate passives when your weapon sets serve distinct roles and each role benefits from a different passive focus. For example, one set might emphasize damage while another supports skills that apply curses or exposure. Weigh the benefit of that specialization against its point cost and the path needed to reach the relevant nodes.

A community build guide for version 0.4, “Freeze & Self-Chill IceNova Stormweaver,” illustrates this approach: it uses Weapon Set I as a damage setup and Weapon Set II as a support setup, with the support focus including curse magnitude, exposure effect, and duration. This is a dated example, not a universal recommendation or a guarantee that the same choices remain optimal.

  2. Check whether each role benefits from a different passive focus.
  3. Compare those benefits with the nodes required and the Skill Point accounting for the more-allocated set.
  4. Recheck the build after balance changes, especially if a passive has been removed or changed.

How should I keep a weapon-set build current?

Build choices can become outdated. Grinding Gear Games’ Third Edict FAQ warns that extensive balance changes may require passive reallocation and can change how parts of a build function; a tree may need changes if it contains removed passives. Treat older build guides as starting points and verify their passives and skill assignments against the current game.

The reviewed sources do not establish current interface labels, exact menu steps, a quest-by-quest reward list, or a total number of available points. This guide therefore avoids specific UI instructions and point totals.

Why are both Weapon Set points and Skill Points consumed?

According to the official forum reply, this is intentional. Allocating into the set with more passives can use Skill Points; if the other set has fewer allocated nodes, extra Skill Points are not needed until the allocations are equal.

Should I specialize both weapon sets?

Only if the second set has a useful role and its skills benefit from a distinct passive focus. Compare that benefit with the points and build complexity it requires.
