It is most appealing if you want a demanding fantasy RPG with character-building and political decisions; it is a weaker fit if you want a simple, fast-paced adventure. Reviewers have praised the Definitive Edition’s turn-based combat option and expanded content, but reported technical problems are mixed and platform-specific—not proof of how every current copy performs.
What kind of RPG is Pathfinder: Kingmaker?
Pathfinder: Kingmaker adapts Paizo’s Pathfinder setting into a deep computer role-playing game. You create and develop a character, explore, fight, and make decisions that affect the story and the realm you govern. Kingdom management is not merely a separate bonus activity: it is tied to the choices your character makes. Paizo describes the relationship directly: “Your kingdom is a reflection of your character and your choices throughout the game.” Paizo’s official game page presents the setting and kingdom premise.
That combination gives the game a particular appeal: it asks you to engage with both a rules-heavy character system and the consequences of leadership. If you enjoy building a character within a detailed tabletop-derived system and seeing decisions carry through a larger campaign, those systems are central attractions. If you would rather spend your time in a streamlined action adventure, the complexity may feel like friction rather than depth.
What do reviews say about the Definitive Edition?
The review picture is mixed, and it is important to distinguish the Definitive Edition from the original release. A positive Metacritic critic-review excerpt describes it as “A brilliant cRPG” and credits the edition with solved bugs and the addition of an official turn-based combat mode. The excerpt does not identify its original publication or author, so it should be read as an unattributed review comment, not a named critic’s verdict.

- In the world of golarion, explore the stolen lands, a region that has been contested territory for centuries - hundreds of kingdoms have risen and fallen in these lands
- Conquer new regions and claim them as your own, carving your kingdom from the wilderness
- Create heroes (or villains) and customize your character, choosing from more than 1000 different abilities, skills, and feats
- Expand your kingdom, opening up new territories, and allowing you to build new towns and community
- Choose your way to fight in real-time with pause, or Switch to turn-based mode to have better control over the fight placement
That praise is not the whole story. Other review and community excerpts include reports of crashes and technical faults, especially in console discussions. These are individual experiences, not controlled tests or a verified present-day failure rate. The available reports do not establish that all platforms behave alike, or that a problem reported for one edition or platform applies to another.
For comparison, GameSpot’s listing gives Daniel Starkey’s review of the original Pathfinder: Kingmaker a score of 6/10 and identifies the original game’s release date as September 25, 2018. That score is for the original game, not a Definitive Edition review, so it should not be treated as a rating of the later edition.

- Story rich: in the world of golarion, explore the stolen lands, a region that has been contested territory for centuries: hundreds of kingdoms have risen and fallen in these lands.
- Conquer: Conquer new regions as claim them as your own, carving your kingdom from the wilderness.
- characters customisation: create heroes (or villains) and customise your character choosing from more than 1000 different abilities, skills, and feats.
- focus on companions: meet with iconic characters from the Pathfinder setting itself in your journey. You'll need to decide who to trust and who to Observe, as each companion has a plan, alignment and goals that may differ from yours
- kingdom building: expand your kingdom, opening up new territories and allowing you to build new towns and community.Play your way: Choose your way to fight in real-time with pause or switch to turn-based mode to have better control over the fight placement
How does combat feel, and is turn-based mode included?
The Definitive Edition’s official turn-based combat mode is a notable addition highlighted in the positive review excerpt. It offers a different way to approach encounters from real-time combat with pause: the turn-based option makes combat unfold in discrete turns, while real-time-with-pause lets you manage action as it plays out. Which suits you depends on whether you prefer a more deliberate, turn-by-turn pace or the flow of pausing and issuing orders.
On consoles, the game is played with controller-based navigation rather than a mouse-and-keyboard setup. The material available here does not establish exact control quality or usability differences, so preferences about interface and input are best treated as personal rather than settled by a universal review verdict.

Which platforms have the console Definitive Edition?
The console Definitive Edition is listed for PS4 and Xbox One. The PlayStation Store listing also says the PS4 product is playable on PS5, while noting that some PS4 features may be absent on PS5. That is a compatibility statement, not a guarantee that every feature or performance characteristic is identical between the two consoles.
Platform matters when weighing technical complaints. A crash report from a console discussion cannot establish PC behavior, and an older review does not verify current behavior after later updates. The available review excerpts do not provide a current patch-status audit or a reliable, platform-by-platform assessment of present-day stability. Treat claims about crashes as attributed reports, not as a confirmed current crash rate.

Is the Definitive Edition worth your time?
It is a strong candidate if you want a long-form RPG whose appeal comes from character builds, Pathfinder-system depth, consequential decisions, kingdom management, and the option to play combat turn by turn. The edition’s additions have drawn positive critical comment, but they do not erase the need to consider your preferred platform and tolerance for technical uncertainty.
- Consider it if: you enjoy complex RPG systems, making choices with political or kingdom consequences, and taking time over combat.
- Think twice if: you want a straightforward adventure, dislike rules-heavy character progression, or expect a confirmed platform-specific stability guarantee from the available review evidence.
- Before choosing a console copy: check the store listing for the exact platform and edition; PS5 playability is listed for the PS4 product, with possible feature differences.
The ESRB rates the Definitive Edition Teen for Blood and Gore, Language, Suggestive Themes, Use of Alcohol, and Violence.
