What’s actually slowing this PC down?

First find where the controller stops appearing: in the PC’s connection, in Steam’s detected-controller list, or only inside one game. That distinction points to the right fix. Check whether the game supports controllers, then test the connection and Steam settings before isolating other devices or software.
1. Check whether the game supports controllers
A controller can work correctly on your PC and still be ignored by a particular game. Steam notes that not all Steam games support controllers. Its Full Controller Support label means a game can be downloaded, launched, and played using only a controller. Partial Controller Support means a controller may work during play, but you may still need a mouse or keyboard for installation, configuration, or menus. If the controller works in other games but not this one, check the game’s store-page support information and the publisher’s current instructions before changing system settings. A game may require a particular configuration or may not accept gamepad input.
2. Find out where the controller disappears
Use the failure point to narrow the cause. If the controller does not connect to the PC, focus on USB or Bluetooth. If Steam detects it but one game does not respond, focus on that game’s support and configuration. If Steam does not detect it, check the connection and Steam’s controller settings.

- Connected, but absent from Steam: inspect Steam’s detected-controller list and test/configuration tools.
- Visible in Steam, but not working in one game: check game support, Steam Input/controller handling, and overlays.
3. Check whether Steam detects the controller
Open Steam’s controller settings, look for the controller among detected devices, and use the available test or configuration tools. Steam’s controller troubleshooting guide covers this process.
If Steam sees the controller, the connection is at least reaching Steam; that does not mean every game will accept input. If Steam does not see it, move on to the wired or Bluetooth checks below.

4. Test the connection
For a USB connection
- Disconnect and reseat the controller’s cable at both ends.
- Try another USB port. If you are using a hub, connect directly to the PC as a diagnostic.
- If available, test with a cable that matches the controller’s connector and supports data, not charging only.
- Check whether the controller appears in Steam. If the problem changes by port or device setup, continue to the USB contention checks.

For Bluetooth
- Charge the controller and put it into its Bluetooth pairing mode.
- Confirm that the controller supports Bluetooth; a wireless controller is not necessarily a Bluetooth controller.
- Check that it is actually paired and connected to the PC, rather than merely appearing as available to pair.
- If possible, try it with another host. If the problem follows the controller, investigate its pairing mode or manufacturer instructions; if it works elsewhere, focus on the PC’s connection path.

5. Check Steam Input, overlays, and software conflicts
If Steam detects the controller but the game does not, review Steam’s controller settings and the game’s controller configuration. Also check that the Steam Overlay is enabled where relevant. Steam Support says, “The Steam Overlay is vital to Steam Controller functionality.” This guidance is specific to Steam Controller troubleshooting; it is not proof that every gamepad problem is caused by the overlay.
- Close the game and restart Steam, then relaunch the game.
- Review the game’s controller settings and Steam’s controller handling.
- Temporarily disable third-party software or external launcher overlays as a diagnostic, then test again.
- If disabling one item fixes the input, re-enable items one at a time to identify the conflict and restore unrelated settings.

6. Isolate other controllers and input devices
Another connected controller or input device can interfere with game input. To check, close the game, disconnect other controllers and unnecessary input devices, then reconnect only the controller you are testing and relaunch the game. Add devices back one at a time. If a particular device brings the failure back, Steam recommends updating or disabling that device’s driver. See Steam’s input-device isolation steps.

If behavior changes with the USB port, attached devices, or intermittent disconnections, test for USB scheduling or contention. Try another port, unplug unnecessary USB peripherals, and—if possible—test the controller on another computer. Steam’s USB connection and contention help describes this issue.

8. If the problem remains
Note whether the controller works over another connection method or on another host, whether Steam detects it, and whether the issue occurs in every game or just one. Those results help separate a controller or connection problem from game-specific support or configuration. For a non-Steam launcher, a particular controller model, or a game with its own input settings, consult the controller maker’s and game publisher’s current official instructions; Steam’s menus and guidance do not establish a universal Windows procedure for every setup.
