PEAK Lagging in Multiplayer on PC? How to Diagnose and Fix It

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If PEAK players teleport, freeze, or disconnect, start by finding out whether the problem is network lag, a game connection failure, or low frame rate. Those symptoms can look similar, but the fixes are different. Work through the checks below in order, changing one thing at a time.

First, identify what kind of lag you have

PEAK is a friends-only co-op game, not a conventional public-matchmaking game; its Steam listing describes inviting up to three other players. Landfall says its multiplayer connection troubleshooting involves Photon. That does not mean every stutter is a network problem: a slow or uneven frame rate can make movement look delayed even when the connection is fine. See PEAK on Steam and Landfall’s PEAK FAQ.

What you see More likely explanation Start here
Other players teleport, freeze, or move in jumps Unstable connection, packet loss, Wi-Fi congestion, or a relay/routing problem Try Ethernet, stop other network traffic, restart the router, and test another network
Everyone disconnects at once Steam, Photon, host, service, or shared-lobby trouble Check for service or maintenance problems, then create a fresh lobby
Only one player rubber-bands That player’s connection, firewall, router, VPN, or PC Have that player compare Ethernet with Wi-Fi and test without a VPN
The game looks like a slideshow, but voice chat is clear Low FPS or rendering stutter Check frame rate, GPU use, graphics settings, drivers, and overlays
Inputs stop registering or the character halts Peripheral or controller conflict, or local performance trouble Disconnect controllers, joysticks, wheels, and pedals; test again
Textures fail to load or scenery looks broken Rendering or GPU issue Check system requirements; consider the documented GPU-culling launch option below
You cannot join, or the lobby repeatedly drops Steam friend/privacy settings, firewall, mods, router, or Photon connection trouble Check Steam friendships, remove mods, verify files, and test a new lobby

If the picture itself pauses or runs unevenly while voice chat continues normally, prioritize the graphics checks. If the picture is smooth but other players jump or actions arrive late, prioritize the network checks.

Try these quick fixes first

  1. Close PEAK, then exit Steam completely with Steam > Exit.
  2. Restart the PC and router. Reopen Steam and PEAK.
  3. Stop downloads, cloud backups, video uploads, torrents, and live streams while testing.
  4. Create a fresh lobby and try it with one other player before inviting the whole group.
  5. Confirm the players can invite one another through Steam. As a troubleshooting precaution, have everyone in the group add one another as Steam friends; restrictive profile privacy can contribute to connection problems, according to Landfall.
  6. Test once without mods, overlays, downloads, or streaming running.

Landfall recommends restarting the computer and router, closing other programs, verifying files, and checking connection stability. Steam also routinely goes offline for maintenance on Tuesdays, according to the developer FAQ. If several players begin disconnecting together, check for Steam or game-service trouble before changing Windows networking settings; routine maintenance alone is not proof of a PEAK outage. Fix failed joins and Photon connection problems

Work through these checks when players cannot join, the lobby drops, or one or more people rubber-band. PEAK uses Steam friends and Photon relay infrastructure according to Landfall; a bad route or service-side problem is not always fixable on your PC. Steam’s networking documentation describes relay networking generally, but it should not be taken as proof that PEAK uses Steam Networking: Steamworks networking documentation.

Verify the game files

  1. In Steam, open Library.
  2. Right-click PEAK and select Properties.
  3. Open Installed Files, then select Verify integrity of game files.
  4. Wait for Steam to finish, restart Steam, and test a new lobby.

Verification can restore missing or damaged files; it cannot repair a weak Wi-Fi signal, ISP routing, or a congested network. Landfall documents this path in its troubleshooting guide.

Remove mods completely for the test

Mods do not necessarily cause lag, but they complicate diagnosis and may become incompatible after updates. Landfall advises removing PEAK mods and checking that mod-loader files, including BepInEx folders, are gone; merely disabling Workshop content may not be enough.

  1. Close PEAK.
  2. Remove the mod loader and leftover mod files from the PEAK installation folder. Remove Workshop content if applicable.
  3. Verify the game files using the Steam steps above.
  4. Restart Steam and test an unmodified lobby.

Restore mods only after confirming the unmodified game works. See Landfall’s PEAK FAQ and troubleshooting guide.

Check antivirus and firewall interference safely

A firewall block can prevent joining or maintaining a session; antivirus software can also interfere with game files or network activity. Neither change will fix genuine packet loss.

  1. Add PEAK as an exception in your security software first, then restart Steam and PEAK and test.
  2. If the problem remains, briefly disable third-party antivirus only as a controlled diagnostic test, then re-enable it immediately.
  3. Do not leave antivirus or Windows Firewall disabled. If the test changes nothing, restore the protection settings and continue troubleshooting.

Landfall recommends checking antivirus interference and excluding PEAK where needed: official FAQ.

Look for cFosSpeed

Landfall specifically warns that cFosSpeed, which can be bundled with motherboard utilities, may cause Photon issues. This is a lead to test, not proof that the software is responsible for every connection problem.

  1. Open Windows Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Search for cFosSpeed or motherboard network-optimization software.
  3. If present, temporarily disable its network-shaping feature or uninstall it for a test.
  4. Restart the PC and try PEAK again. Reinstall or re-enable it if the test makes no difference.

Compare VPN on and off

A VPN can change the route to a relay and may help in some cases, but it can also add latency, cause packet loss, or create firewall conflicts. Test the same lobby with the VPN on and off; do not assume it is a permanent fix just because it is commonly suggested.

Check Steam friends and lobby access

Confirm the host can invite each player through Steam, and try recreating the lobby after correcting friendship or privacy settings. Landfall recommends that players in the group be Steam friends when troubleshooting disconnections. Friendship and privacy settings can block or complicate joining; they do not reduce ordinary ping. Use Invite Only if you want to prevent unexpected players from joining.

Tell whether the problem is your network, host, or game

Change one condition at a time so you can interpret the result. Ethernet is a useful comparison with Wi-Fi; a phone hotspot or another internet connection can help isolate a home router or ISP issue if practical.

Test result What it suggests Next step
PEAK works on another network Your home Wi-Fi, router, ISP, or route may be involved Compare Ethernet with Wi-Fi and test without competing traffic
One player has trouble while the rest are fine That player’s connection, PC, security software, mods, or router is a stronger lead Have that player test Ethernet, remove mods, and compare VPN on/off
Changing the host fixes the lobby The original host’s connection or route may be involved Use the working host for now and test the original host on another network
Everyone has the same failure on multiple networks Game, Photon, Steam, or build trouble is more plausible Check service status or maintenance, verify files, and report reproducible errors
Other online games also lag A broader Wi-Fi, router, ISP, VPN, or PC network issue is more likely Test Ethernet, stop other traffic, and investigate the wider connection
Only PEAK stutters visually, while the network feels normal Rendering or local performance is more plausible Follow the FPS and graphics checks below

Changing DNS or forwarding ports is not a standard fix in Landfall’s PEAK guidance. Avoid making router changes without a specific diagnosis.

Fix FPS stutter that feels like network lag

Use this section if frame rate drops, the image hitches, or textures fail to appear. A weak GPU can cause low FPS or rendering trouble; that is different from high network latency.

Check the PC against PEAK’s listed requirements

The Steam listing specifies these requirements for the Windows version:

Minimum Recommended
Operating system Windows 10, 64-bit processor and OS Windows 11, 64-bit processor and OS
Processor Intel Core i5 2.5 GHz or equivalent Intel Core i5 3.0 GHz or AMD Ryzen 5 or equivalent
Memory 8 GB RAM 16 GB RAM
Graphics GTX 1060 or RX 6600 XT RTX 2060 or RX 7600 XT
DirectX Version 12 Version 12
Available storage 4 GB 6 GB

These are the minimum and recommended specifications shown on Steam’s PEAK listing; meeting them does not guarantee smooth performance. On a laptop, check for power or thermal throttling and confirm the game is using the discrete GPU when one is available.

Try graphics and frame-pacing changes

  • Update the GPU driver, then restart the PC.
  • Close unnecessary programs and disable nonessential NVIDIA, AMD, and Discord overlays for a test.
  • Try a frame-rate cap or V-Sync. A cap may improve frame pacing; V-Sync can reduce tearing but may add input latency. Undo either change if it makes the game feel worse.
  • Test another rendering API—DX11, DX12, or Vulkan—using PEAK’s available options. A different API can help rendering on some systems, but it will not fix packet loss.
  • On a hybrid-graphics laptop, open Windows Settings > System > Display > Graphics, add PEAK if needed, and set it to High performance. This path is documented in Landfall’s troubleshooting guide.
  • If Nahimic is installed, disable it temporarily to test. Restore it if it makes no difference.

Use the GPU-culling option only for texture or GPU symptoms

Landfall documents -gpuCulling false for texture-loading and GPU issues, not as a general network-lag fix. To test it, right-click PEAK in Steam Library, select Properties, enter the option under Launch Options, and launch using DX11 or DX12. Remove the option if it does not help or causes a new problem. See the PEAK FAQ.

Rule out an input-device conflict

If movement or inputs halt while the image and other players remain smooth, disconnect controllers, joysticks, racing wheels, and pedals, then test with only the input device you need. Reconnect them one at a time to identify whether a peripheral is involved.

When the issue is probably outside your PC

After the local checks, service or routing trouble becomes a more likely explanation when several players fail at once, changing host or network does not help, or multiple networks show the same connection failure. Landfall says PEAK uses Photon for server relays, so some route or relay problems may be beyond an individual player’s control. Steam maintenance can also affect connections; Landfall notes recurring Tuesday downtime, which is not evidence of a specific outage on any particular day.

For players in Russia, Landfall’s FAQ calls out region-specific ISP restrictions as a possible connection factor. Treat that as regional guidance, not a general explanation for players elsewhere. If the problem is isolated to one player or one home network, continue testing that player’s router, Wi-Fi, security software, and route before concluding the service is at fault.

Send Landfall a useful log if the problem persists

Landfall’s player log records only the latest game session, so copy it immediately after reproducing the problem.

  1. Press Windows key + R and type appdata.
  2. Open LocalLowLandCrabPEAK.
  3. Copy the file named Player.
  4. Email it to [email protected].

Include the exact date and time, player count, host, whether the issue affected everyone or one player, Wi-Fi or Ethernet, VPN status, whether mods or cFosSpeed were installed, and any Photon or Steam error message. A screenshot or short video can help show whether the issue is visual stutter, rubber-banding, or a failed join. Landfall’s instructions are in the official PEAK FAQ.

Fixes to avoid unless a specific symptom points to them

  • Random DNS changes: DNS is not a reliable cure for in-game latency or packet loss.
  • Unnecessary port forwarding: Landfall does not list it as a standard first-line PEAK fix.
  • Leaving security software disabled: Use a brief test only, then restore protection.
  • Buying faster hardware to fix ping: A GPU upgrade may address persistent low FPS, but not ordinary network latency or a relay problem.
  • Installing game boosters or registry cleaners: They are not part of Landfall’s recommended PEAK troubleshooting.
  • Running as administrator as a performance tweak: It is not an established way to reduce latency.

If PEAK still fails after file verification, a clean unmodded test, network comparisons, and a graphics check, send the log and reproducible details to Landfall rather than making unrelated system changes.
