Penny’s Big Breakaway is a colorful 3D platformer built around yo-yo tricks, momentum, and escaping pursuit. Reviews highlight its inventive movement and old-school platforming appeal, while noting that the experience is not equally polished on every platform. Here’s what the available critic and player feedback says—and what kind of player is most likely to enjoy it.
What is Penny’s Big Breakaway?
Developed by Evening Star and published at launch by Private Division, Penny’s Big Breakaway launched on February 21, 2024, for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. The game follows street performer Penny and her living yo-yo companion, Yo-Yo, after a mysterious Cosmic String brings the yo-yo to life. Penny must evade the Emperor’s penguin forces.
The official description presents a game of platforming, movement, and yo-yo tricks that build combos. It lists 11 worlds and dozens of levels, and describes the controls as easy to play but hard to master. Story and Time Attack modes are also listed in Limited Run Games’ product description.

What do reviewers praise—and criticize?
Movement and tricks are the main appeal
Nintendo Life praised the central movement and soundtrack. The yo-yo is more than a visual gimmick: it anchors the game’s movement and trick-based play, giving the platforming its distinct identity. That focus should appeal most to players who enjoy building momentum, experimenting with movement, and replaying stages to improve.
It wears its early 3D-platformer influences openly
GameSpot’s review framed the game as an affectionate homage to early 3D platformers and rated it 7/10. That is one outlet’s assessment, rather than a universal verdict. Players who enjoy the style and rhythm of classic 3D platforming may find the throwback approach appealing; those looking for a more contemporary or tightly polished feel may be less persuaded.

The Switch version has a caveat
Nintendo Life noted that the Switch version can feel rough around the edges at times, even while praising its movement and soundtrack. That observation applies to the Switch review and should not be treated as a finding about every platform version.
Is Penny’s Big Breakaway worth playing?
It is a strong fit for players drawn to expressive movement, yo-yo-based tricks, and replayable platforming, particularly if they enjoy time-attack or score-chasing. The premise and movement give it a clear identity, while the reported Switch roughness is worth weighing if that is your platform. The review evidence is favorable in places but mixed enough that the game is better described as a distinctive option than a universal recommendation.
