The core rule in Persona 4 Golden is to find what an enemy is weak to, use that opening to gain extra actions, and keep your own party’s vulnerabilities in mind. The protagonist’s ability to switch among Personas makes it easier to cover missing attack types; your other party members contribute their own skills and strengths.
How a turn works
Combat is turn-based. You can attack with weapons or use Persona skills. According to the official Atlus site, striking a Shadow’s weakness knocks it down and activates “1 MORE,” giving the attacker another action. Knocking every enemy down opens an opportunity for an All-Out Attack.

That creates a useful decision loop: learn or test a weakness, exploit it when the opportunity is worthwhile, then decide whether to keep pressuring the enemy, heal, guard, or use an All-Out Attack. A weakness hit is not a promise that every enemy will fall to the same attack, nor does the presence of an All-Out Attack opportunity mean you must take it immediately.
How to find and exploit weaknesses
Use the game’s in-battle analysis and what you observe as you fight. The official site explains the knockdown and extra-action mechanic, but does not provide a complete weakness chart. Enemy affinities can vary, so treat each new enemy as a question to investigate rather than assuming a familiar-looking Shadow has the same weakness as another.

There is a risk on the other side of the mechanic: a player-authored Steam Community guide by Ace Dreamer reports that enemies can exploit party members’ weaknesses to gain extra actions, and may focus attacks on one vulnerable ally. Keep an eye on who is exposed and consider guarding or healing when maintaining pressure is too risky. This specific enemy-side account is community guidance, rather than a complete official rules reference.
What party members contribute
Party roles are best understood as contributions and coverage, not a fixed ranking of characters. Each party member gains a Persona and has individual skills, strengths, and weaknesses. Mike Meeker, Lead Editor at Atlus USA, described party Personas as a source of “devastating spells and powerful physical attacks” in his 2012 PlayStation.Blog beginner guide.
When deciding whom to bring or what to do on a turn, think about the needs of the current fight:
- Coverage: Can the party reach the enemy with the attack types likely to expose a weakness?
- Damage: Does the lineup have useful physical or elemental attacks for this encounter?
- Support: Can someone help the party recover or stay in the fight when it is under pressure?
- Risk: Does an enemy’s attack threaten a weakness on one of the active members?
These are practical ways to compare options, not official character rankings or a universal best-party formula. The available official beginner material does not establish an optimal build for every character or dungeon.

Why the protagonist switches Personas
The protagonist can hold multiple Personas and switch among them, giving you more flexibility than a single fixed skill set. Atlus says Personas obtained in battle can be fused to enhance the protagonist, and that different Personas can suit different situations. In practice, fusion helps refresh your options: build a roster that can cover attack types or capabilities your current party lacks.
Meeker’s beginner guide also explains that Social Links relate to Persona Arcana and make Personas of those Arcana easier to create and use. That makes Social Links relevant to progression as well as story, without changing the basic combat goal: bring useful options for the challenges ahead.

Follow Ups and Cavalry Attacks
The official Atlus page also describes conditional Follow Up attacks involving two party members, as well as a Cavalry Attack in which an ally outside the active party can join. These are additional ways an encounter can develop, but the official page does not enumerate all activation conditions. Treat them as possible opportunities rather than relying on an unverified trigger rule.

Atlus says difficulty can be selected at the beginning and does not affect the story. Its official guidance points beginners toward Very Easy or Easy for a lower-pressure pace. Choose a setting that lets you learn weaknesses and party management at a comfortable speed.
