This guide covers Persona 5 Royal. Confidants are character relationships linked to Arcana; raising their ranks unlocks useful abilities, but the right meeting time and requirements vary by character. If you are playing the original Persona 5, do not assume Royal’s timing, abilities, or third-semester advice applies unchanged.
For Royal’s additional story content, keep the Councillor, Faith, and Justice deadlines in view: GamesRadar’s guide lists Councillor rank 9 and Justice rank 8 by November 18, and Faith rank 5 by December 18. These are Royal-specific guide dates; check your in-game rank and calendar as you play.
What Confidants do
Each Confidant belongs to an Arcana and offers benefits as the relationship advances. Depending on the character, those benefits can improve combat, Persona fusion, money-making, or how efficiently you spend time. Some Confidants are party members whose ranks add battle support; others help with activities outside combat or unlock extra options in the Velvet Room.

There is no single best priority list for every player. Your most useful ranks depend on the party you use, the abilities you want, your progress through the calendar, and whether you are aiming to see Royal’s additional story material.

How rank-ups and affinity work
Hangouts build affinity through dialogue choices and other event details. A meeting does not necessarily increase the displayed Confidant rank: sometimes it adds points toward the next rank, and you need another meeting before the relationship deepens. The best dialogue response is specific to the character and event, so use that character’s entry in a detailed guide rather than relying on a universal answer rule.
- Carry the matching Arcana Persona. Before a meeting, bring a Persona of the Confidant’s Arcana. RPG Site’s character guides and the structured Megaten Database reference describe Arcana bonuses in their point totals; having the matching Persona improves affinity gained.
- Check whether the meeting will rank up. If a hangout does not advance the displayed rank, it may still be useful affinity progress. Avoid assuming that a no-rank-up meeting means you chose the wrong dialogue.
- Use Fortune as an accelerator. Chihaya’s Fortune abilities can add affinity or provide other readings. The Megaten Database places Affinity Reading at rank 5 in Royal; GamesRadar describes it as a paid boost that can reduce time spent on meetings devoted mainly to building affinity. Reading names vary across references, so check the effect and current in-game description.
What can affect a Confidant’s availability
Requirements are character-specific. A Confidant can be gated by story progress, a calendar date, time of day, a social-stat rank, or a Mementos request. Weather and other circumstances can also affect whether a meeting is available. Check the individual character’s current requirements and schedule before setting aside a day; one generic weekly schedule will not reliably cover everyone.

Use a character guide as a checklist, not as a promise that every meeting will be available on a fixed date in every playthrough. Your story progress and completed requirements determine what you can do next.

Example: unlocking Hifumi
Hifumi shows why individual entries matter. RPG Site places the Star Confidant at Kanda Church at night and says her cooperation requires completing Kaneshiro’s Bank heist, visiting after June 25, and reaching Charm rank 3. Her first rank unlocks Koma Sabaki, which lets Joker swap party members during his turn. RPG Site’s answer-point totals assume you have a Star Arcana Persona with you; the guide also notes that some of her hangouts raise Knowledge.
Those are Hifumi’s conditions and benefits, not a template for other Confidants. For anyone else, check that character’s entry for the relevant story gate, day and time, social-stat threshold, and reward.

A practical routine for spending time
- Pick a goal. Decide whether you are pursuing Royal’s third semester, a particular gameplay benefit, or a broader set of ranks. The available time and best priorities differ.
- Check your next requirement. Look up the individual Confidant’s gate and availability, then confirm that the relevant story event, date, social stat, or request is complete.
- Bring the matching Persona. Have a Persona of that character’s Arcana before starting the meeting so the Arcana affinity bonus can apply.
- Use a Fortune reading when useful. In Royal, Chihaya’s readings can help with affinity or other goals, but the relevant benefits require her own rank progression and a fee may apply to affinity boosts.
- Recheck rank progress after the meeting. If the rank did not rise, decide whether another affinity-building meeting or a different available activity is the best use of your next time slot.
Why a universal max-all schedule is unreliable
A max-all route depends on edition, story progression, deadlines, social-stat requirements, activity availability, and the targets you care about. Romance choices and other player decisions can also affect what a route is meant to achieve. The guide sources cover schedules, requirements, and event choices, but do not establish one complete daily route that guarantees every desired outcome. Use a route only when it matches your version and goals; otherwise, track high-priority deadlines and make choices from the individual character entries.
