pixdflt.dll is a legacy scanner and imaging DLL, not a normal Windows component. If pixdflt.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair the scanner, OCR, or document-capture software that originally installed it rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
The file is associated with PIXDFLT, historically developed by Pixel Translations Incorporated. Its description is ISIS (Image and Scanner Interface Standard). ISIS is a scanner-control and image-processing framework used by document scanners, OCR programs, and capture applications.
That context matters because Windows repair tools generally will not restore this file. The reliable fix is to identify the affected application or scanner driver and reinstall its complete, compatible package.

The wording gives you a useful clue:
- An error when an OCR or scanning program opens usually points to that program or its scanner driver.
- An error only when scanning begins often points to ISIS/TWAIN driver selection or a conflicting driver.
- “Specified module could not be found” can mean that
pixdflt.dllitself is missing, but it can also mean a dependency required by the DLL is missing. - “Wrong version of PIXDFLT” usually means that an old and new scanner component are being mixed.
Do not assume that every copy of the file has the same version, size, path, or architecture. Legacy scanner packages can contain different builds.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the parent scanner application
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
This is the most likely solution. pixdflt.dll normally works as part of a larger scanner or imaging package, so replacing only the file leaves the rest of the driver stack inconsistent.
Identify the parent program
Start with the application named in the error. It may be:
- An OCR application such as an older OmniPage installation
- A document-capture or archiving program
- Scanner software supplied with a Canon or another document scanner
- An application using an ISIS scanner driver
- A commercial imaging program based on Pixel Translations or PixTools technology
If no application name appears, check which scanner you used most recently and which program fails when you select Scan, Import, or Acquire.

- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for the scanner manufacturer, scanner model, OCR software, or document-capture software.
- Select the program and note its exact name and publisher.
Do not use the filename alone to choose a replacement. The scanner model and parent application determine which build belongs on the system.
Repair the application
If the affected program offers a repair action:
- Open Settings with Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps or Apps & features.
- Select the affected scanner or OCR program.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application and test a scan.
Some traditional desktop programs provide repair through Control Panel instead:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the scanner or OCR program.
- Choose Repair or Change.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows and test scanning.
If there is no repair option, use the program’s official installer from the scanner manufacturer or application publisher. Choose the package intended for your exact scanner model and Windows version.
Reinstall cleanly when repair fails
- Disconnect the scanner or turn it off.
- Close the OCR, scanning, and document-capture programs.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Remove the affected scanner software and related ISIS package if the vendor’s instructions identify it.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the complete driver and application package from the scanner manufacturer’s official support page.
- Run the installer as an administrator.
- Reconnect or power on the scanner only when the installer requests it.
- Restart Windows again.
- Open the application and select the scanner from its device list.
If the application has a Repair, Verify, or Verify integrity command, use that before copying files manually. A complete installer restores related files, configuration, licensing information, and scanner data sources that pixdflt.dll may need.
If the program is very old, the manufacturer may no longer provide a package compatible with current Windows versions. In that situation, install only a package supplied by the scanner or application vendor and check whether the application requires a particular compatibility setting.

Fix 2: Reinstall or update the scanner driver
Time needed: 10–25 minutes
A driver change can remove the old PIXDFLT files while leaving the OCR application expecting them. It can also install a driver with a different PIXDFLT build.
Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Imaging devices, Cameras, and Printers, checking each section for the scanner.
- Right-click the scanner.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Record the provider, date, and version.
- Open the Details tab and inspect Driver files or Inf name, if available.
A warning icon indicates a separate device or driver problem, but its absence does not prove that the ISIS software is correct. The application may still be loading an incompatible imaging component.
Install the correct vendor package
Use the scanner manufacturer’s official support page and search by the exact model number. Install the complete Windows package when available, not a random standalone DLL.
If the installer provides separate choices for ISIS, TWAIN, or a scanner utility, choose the interface required by the application. An OCR program configured for ISIS may not work correctly when only a TWAIN package is installed.
After installation:
- Restart Windows.
- Open the scanner application.
- Open its scanner or data-source selection screen.
- Select the newly installed scanner entry.
- Scan a single page.
- Test OCR or document capture if that is where the error appeared.
Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of hunting through multiple driver versions because its free scan shows which drivers it identifies as stale; the repair or driver installation is handled by the full version, while the scanner manufacturer’s package remains the definitive source for this particular DLL.
Remove a stale device entry only when necessary
If the scanner appears multiple times or an old device entry remains after replacement:
- In Device Manager, right-click the obsolete scanner entry.
- Select Uninstall device.
- If Windows offers Attempt to remove the driver for this device, select it only when you are sure the entry is obsolete and you have the current installer ready.
- Select Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the official scanner package again.
Do not remove random entries under System devices or delete driver files from System32 or SysWOW64. Those folders may contain components shared by other software.

Time needed: 15–30 minutes
A missing-file message can occur even when a copy is visible on the disk. Windows may be loading a different copy from an unexpected directory, or the application may be finding a file with the wrong architecture or version.
Some legacy documentation lists both PIXDFLT.DLL and PIXDFLTN.DLL. Do not treat the N suffix as proof that the files are interchangeable.
Find all copies without replacing them
- Open File Explorer.
- Select This PC.
- Search for
pixdflt.dll. - Repeat the search for
pixdfltn.dll. - Right-click each result and select Open file location.
- Right-click the file and select Properties.
- Record the full path, publisher information, version information, and digital-signature status.
The correct file may be in the application’s own directory or in a scanner-driver directory. A copy in a Windows system folder is not automatically the correct copy.

Use the parent application’s repair procedure
If several copies exist, do not overwrite them with one another. Instead:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Close all scanner and OCR programs.
- Make a note of every path.
- Use the application’s Repair option.
- If repair is unavailable, uninstall and reinstall the scanner or imaging package.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application again.
If the vendor specifically documents a duplicate-file conflict, follow that procedure. A reversible approach is to rename the documented suspect file from pixdflt.dll to pixdflt.dll.old, then test. Do not delete it, and do not rename files in system directories unless the vendor explicitly identifies that file and provides recovery instructions.
Check the application architecture
A 32-bit program needs compatible 32-bit dependencies even when it runs on 64-bit Windows. A 64-bit program needs a compatible 64-bit build. Windows does not make all DLLs interchangeable merely because their filenames match.
To check a program’s architecture, consult its documentation or ask the application vendor. Many older programs do not clearly display this information in their normal interface. The scanner package must match the parent program, not just the operating system.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Security software may quarantine a file during a scanner-driver installation or update. It may also remove a file after the package was installed.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
pixdflt.dll, the scanner package, or the OCR application. - Note the detection name and file path.
- Do not restore the file immediately.
- Confirm that it came from a currently installed, known scanner or application package.
- Check the publisher’s support information or contact the vendor.
- If the vendor confirms the package is genuine, restore it according to the vendor’s instructions.
- Reinstall the official package if there is any doubt.
Do not consider a DLL safe merely because a third-party download page labels it clean. An unsourced file can be malicious, modified, or simply the wrong build. Reinstalling a signed vendor package is safer than restoring an isolated file.
Fix 5: Install a missing runtime only when the error names it
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
pixdflt.dll is not itself a Microsoft Visual C++ runtime file. Installing Visual C++ Redistributable packages at random is unlikely to repair a missing ISIS component.
Consider a runtime repair only if the error also names a dependency such as:
VCRUNTIMEMSVCP- A specific Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable package
- An installer failure mentioning a runtime
If that happens:
- Record whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Open Microsoft’s official Visual C++ Redistributable documentation.
- Download the architecture required by the application.
- Run the installer.
- Choose Repair if it is already installed.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the scanner application.
Legacy applications may require an older Visual C++ package alongside a newer one. Do not remove an older runtime simply because a newer runtime is present.

Fix 6: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15–45 minutes
DISM and SFC are secondary fixes here because pixdflt.dll is associated with third-party scanner software rather than Windows itself. They are useful when Windows has broader component corruption, installer failures, or protected system-file problems.
Run DISM
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Leave the window open if progress appears to pause.
- Restart Windows.
Run System File Checker
After restarting:
- Open Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin) again.
- Enter:
sfc /scannow
- Press Enter.
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application.
If SFC reports that it found no integrity violations, that does not prove that the third-party PIXDFLT package is correct. If DISM and SFC report repairs but the same scanner error remains, return to the scanner application and driver reinstall steps.
If repeatedly running these commands is becoming guesswork, Outbyte PC Repair can show what its free scan identifies instead of making you repeat SFC and DISM without knowing what changed; the repair is performed by the full version, and reinstalling the scanner application remains the definitive fix for this file.
Fix 7: Do not use regsvr32 unless the vendor requires it
Time needed: 5 minutes if applicable
regsvr32 is not a universal missing-DLL repair command. It is intended for DLL or OCX files that expose a registration entry point, commonly COM or ActiveX components.
Recommended Free Tools
A scanner runtime or ISIS image-processing DLL normally needs to be found and loaded by its parent application. Registering it does not install its dependencies, configure the scanner, select an ISIS data source, or make an incompatible build work.
Use regsvr32 only when the scanner or application vendor explicitly instructs you to register that exact file. The required command may also depend on whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit. Running the wrong regsvr32 copy can produce another misleading error.
If the vendor supplies a documented command, run it from an elevated Terminal and use the exact path provided. If the vendor provides no such instruction, skip registration and repair the complete package instead.

Avoid websites offering individual copies of pixdflt.dll. They create several problems:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- The file may contain malware or unwanted modifications.
- The version may belong to another scanner model or application generation.
- The architecture may not match the program.
- Related DLLs, configuration files, licensing data, and scanner drivers may still be missing.
- Copying it into
System32orSysWOW64can create a conflicting duplicate. - A “specified module could not be found” error may actually identify a missing dependency.
The safe sources are the scanner manufacturer’s official support page, the OCR or document-capture publisher’s official installer, and Microsoft’s official pages for Windows components and runtimes.
Common causes of pixdflt.dll errors
| Cause | What usually works |
|---|---|
| Scanner or OCR package was removed | Reinstall the complete official package |
| Driver update was incomplete | Repair or reinstall the matching scanner driver |
| Antivirus quarantined the file | Verify the package and reinstall or restore through vendor guidance |
| Old and new PIXDFLT copies conflict | Use the application repair procedure and remove only vendor-documented duplicates |
| Wrong scanner interface selected | Select the required ISIS or TWAIN source in the application |
| 32-bit and 64-bit components are mixed | Install the package matching the parent application |
| A dependency is missing | Identify the named dependency and install its official runtime |
| Windows has broader corruption | Run DISM, then SFC |
| Legacy software is unsupported | Contact the application or scanner vendor for a supported package |
When scanning fails but the application opens
This pattern usually points to the scanner layer rather than the main application. Check the selected data source, scanner driver, USB connection, and whether the application expects ISIS or TWAIN.

Also contact the vendor when the application is tied to an old scanner or unsupported operating system. Compatibility mode may not solve an obsolete scanner-driver dependency, and forcing an unrelated DLL into a system directory can make recovery harder.
FAQ
Is pixdflt.dll a Windows file?
Available evidence points to third-party scanner and imaging software, not a standard Windows file. Do not expect Windows Update or SFC to restore it as a normal System32 component.
Is pixdflt.dll a Visual C++ file?
No. It is associated with PIXDFLT and ISIS scanner technology. A Visual C++ runtime may be a separate dependency, but installing it does not normally replace pixdflt.dll.
Is PIXDFLT the same as PIXDFLTN?
Do not assume so. Legacy scanner documentation lists both names, and the suffix may indicate a related build or naming convention. Install the files supplied by the exact scanner or application package.
Recommended Free Tools
Should I copy pixdflt.dll into System32?
No. Manual copying can create architecture mismatches and duplicate-version conflicts. Repair the program that installed the file.
Will regsvr32 fix the error?
Usually not. Use it only if the application or scanner vendor specifically documents registration for that DLL.
Why does Windows say a module is missing when the file exists?
The named DLL may depend on another missing file, may have the wrong architecture, or Windows may be loading an incompatible duplicate from another directory.
Is the file malware?
The filename alone does not establish whether a particular copy is safe. Verify its path, publisher, signature, and relationship to a currently installed scanner or application package.
Can System Restore fix it?
System Restore may help if the problem started immediately after a known driver or software change and no supported installer is available. It is not the first choice when the scanner vendor provides a current repair package.
The practical fix remains the same: identify the parent scanner, OCR, or document-capture application, then repair or reinstall its complete, compatible package.
