Yes—Bazzite is a viable gaming operating system, but it is not a universal Windows replacement. It is a Fedora-based, atomic Linux distribution with Steam, Proton, Gamescope-oriented tools, Lutris, and handheld-focused features ready to use. It is especially compelling for Steam-centric desktop PCs, living-room systems, and Windows handhelds such as the ROG Ally and Legion Go. Many single-player and indie games work well; games dependent on unsupported anti-cheat, Microsoft Store installations, proprietary launchers, or model-specific Windows utilities may still require Windows.
This guide explains which hardware and games fit Bazzite, how to install it safely, how to run Steam and non-Steam libraries, and how to recover when something breaks.
What Bazzite is—and what it is not
Bazzite is built from Fedora and uses an atomic image update model. Instead of replacing individual system packages whenever you update, Bazzite deploys a tested system image and keeps the previous deployment available. If an update causes a regression, you can boot the older image or roll back without reinstalling the operating system.
That model is useful for a gaming machine, but it changes how you install software. Use Flatpak applications, containers through Distrobox, and supported gaming frontends rather than copying random Ubuntu commands or layering packages indiscriminately with rpm-ostree. Bazzite provides KDE Plasma and GNOME desktop images; -deck images add Steam Gaming Mode for a controller-first, console-style interface. Choose Bazzite when Steam is central to your library, you want a couch-friendly interface, or your handheld’s Windows software is getting in the way. Keep Windows—or dual boot—if one essential competitive game uses unsupported anti-cheat, you rely on Microsoft Store installations, need specialized RGB/fan/macro utilities, or own older unsupported NVIDIA hardware. A Steam Deck owner who wants maximum Valve-supported integration may have little reason to replace SteamOS.
Hardware compatibility checklist
Graphics cards
AMD and Intel graphics drivers are generally supplied through the kernel and Bazzite image. NVIDIA has dedicated images, but generation matters:
-nvidia-open: modern Turing-and-newer cards, including GTX 16-series and RTX models.- Legacy
-nvidia: supported Pascal, Maxwell, and Volta-era hardware. - Kepler and older: no supported proprietary-driver path; nouveau may work with substantially worse performance or stability.
NVIDIA results can differ from AMD, particularly in Wayland, Gamescope, Flatpak runtime matching, and Steam Gaming Mode. If you change GPU families, rebase to the correct image instead of assuming the existing installation will adapt automatically. Consult the FAQ and hardware guide.

Bazzite supports Steam Deck and families from ASUS, Lenovo, GPD, OneXPlayer, AYANEO, Ayn, and other x86 handheld vendors. Support is model-specific. TDP controls, fan curves, back buttons, RGB, gyroscope, screen rotation, sleep, external displays, fingerprint readers, and controller mappings can vary. Read the exact model page in the Handheld Wiki before flashing an image.
Storage and media
You need a reliable USB drive of at least 16 GB. Bazzite recommends Fedora Media Writer; Rufus and Ventoy are alternatives, although Ventoy may require extra Secure Boot work. Keep at least 3% free space on the installation drive so updates can complete. Back up documents, saves, browser data, and encryption keys before changing partitions.

Choose the right Bazzite image
- Desktop/laptop or handheld/HTPC? Use a standard image for a conventional desktop. Choose Bazzite-Deck when Steam Gaming Mode and controller navigation are priorities.
- KDE or GNOME? KDE resembles a familiar Windows-style desktop and is highly configurable. GNOME is simpler and often more comfortable on touch screens.
- Which GPU? Select AMD, Intel, modern NVIDIA-open, or legacy NVIDIA to match the primary graphics card.
- Do you actually need Gaming Mode? Desktop users may prefer the regular desktop image; handheld and living-room users generally benefit from Deck.
Install Bazzite safely
Before you boot the installer
- Back up your data and confirm the exact hardware compatibility page.
- Decide between replacing your OS, using a second internal drive, or dual-booting.
- Download the ISO from Bazzite’s official site.
- For Windows dual boot, disable BitLocker and Fast Startup, then resize the Windows partition from Windows Disk Management. A separate drive is safer.
Write the USB and install
- Open Fedora Media Writer, select the Bazzite ISO, and write it to the 16-GB-or-larger USB.
- Reboot and select the USB from the motherboard or handheld boot menu.
- Choose language and keyboard, target disk, automatic or separate-drive partitioning, user account, encryption, and desktop/Gaming Mode options. Labels can change between installer releases.
- Use a wired keyboard where possible; a mouse or touchscreen is normally needed to navigate the installer.
For shared-drive dual boot, use automatic partitioning where possible. If Windows is not added to the boot menu, regenerate it from Bazzite with:
ujust regenerate-grubOn separate drives, the firmware’s UEFI boot menu is often more reliable than GRUB for choosing Windows. Do not erase a disk until you have verified its identity.

Bazzite supports Secure Boot after enrolling the Universal Blue signing key. If enabled without enrollment, the machine can show bad shim signature or you need to load the kernel first. Temporarily disable Secure Boot, boot Bazzite, and run:
ujust enroll-secure-boot-keyOn reboot choose Enroll MOK and enter universalblue. The firmware screen uses an English QWERTY layout and typed characters may be invisible. A BIOS update can re-enable Secure Boot and require enrollment again.
Your first 30 minutes
- Connect to the network and complete all system updates.
- Reboot when requested; the new image is not active until reboot.
- Sign in to Steam and test controller detection, audio output, display resolution, refresh rate, and (on a handheld) buttons and power controls.
- Install one known-compatible game before migrating your whole library.
- Learn how to select the previous deployment in the bootloader.
Desktop images update in the background. In Gaming Mode, use Steam Menu → Settings → System → Check for Updates → Apply. From a host terminal, the general command is:

Playing Steam games
Native Linux games
Steam can run a game’s native Linux build directly. That build is not automatically faster or more reliable than its Windows version under Proton; drivers, developer support, and the individual game determine the better choice.
Windows games with Proton
Install a game normally. If it does not work, open its Properties → Compatibility, enable “Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool,” and test one Proton version at a time. Start with the default Proton, then try Proton Experimental or a version recommended by current reports. Changing versions can change the game’s prefix and shader cache, and a successful launch does not guarantee working multiplayer, video, controllers, mods, or launchers.
Check the game’s Steam page, recent ProtonDB reports, publisher support statements, and Bazzite issue documentation. ProtonDB is community-submitted and can be outdated or hardware-specific—not certification.
Epic, GOG, Amazon and other launchers
Lutris is useful for standalone Windows installers, older discs, and launchers that do not integrate with Steam. Heroic Games Launcher is a practical frontend for Epic Games Store, GOG, and Amazon libraries and can create Steam shortcuts for Gaming Mode.

Battle.net, EA, Ubisoft, Rockstar, and similar launchers may work through Lutris, Heroic, or a Steam shortcut, but they are not guaranteed one-click solutions. Launcher updates can break Wine prefixes, DRM behaves differently, and a title may work in desktop mode but fail in Gaming Mode. Change one variable at a time and check current reports.
Microsoft Store and Xbox PC installations do not run locally through the normal Bazzite path. Cloud services such as Greenlight may provide access to streamed games, generally requiring Game Pass Ultimate; that is cloud gaming, not native installation.

Valve documents Proton support for some Easy Anti-Cheat and BattlEye configurations, but the publisher must enable and maintain that support. The same anti-cheat middleware can work in one game and block another. Kernel-level anti-cheat and some competitive titles remain common reasons to retain Windows. Check the individual game, not merely the anti-cheat brand. See Valve’s Proton documentation.
Software and optional tools
Use Bazzite’s preferred hierarchy:
- Bazaar/Flatpak for graphical desktop applications.
- Distrobox or containers for software unavailable as a Flatpak.
- Lutris or game-specific launchers for non-Steam games.
rpm-ostreelayering only when a system package is genuinely necessary.
Useful optional tools include Gamescope for scaling, fullscreen, frame limiting and Gaming Mode; MangoHud for an overlay; ProtonPlus/ProtonUp-Qt for alternate runners; Protontricks for documented prefix fixes; Decky Loader for handheld extensions; Sunshine for game streaming; and emulator Flatpaks for legally obtained game files. Do not install GE-Proton or a collection of launch options pre-emptively.
Troubleshooting
A game will not launch
- Restart Steam and verify files.
- Try another Proton version and remove unusual launch options.
- Test from desktop mode if Gaming Mode fails.
- Check recent ProtonDB reports and back up saves before touching the prefix.
- If a stuck Proton process blocks launches, run
ujust fix-proton-hang.
NVIDIA Flatpak acceleration is broken
After a driver update, update all Flatpaks in Bazaar or open Bazzite Portal → Manage Bazzite → Update Nvidia Flatpak Runtime.

An update caused a regression
Select the previous deployment in the bootloader or run:

Handheld controls or resume are wrong
Confirm the exact model page, update firmware and BIOS, and test both Gaming and desktop modes. TDP, fan, RGB, controller, sleep, and dock behavior are model-specific; generic remapping advice is not a universal fix.
Gigabyte resumes to a black screen
For affected systems, Bazzite documents this hardware-specific workaround:

- Install Bazzite now: Steam is your main library, your GPU/handheld is supported, and you want a console-like interface with rollback.
- Try a second drive or dual boot: you want to experiment but have Windows-only games, launchers, or utilities to preserve.
- Stay with Windows for now: unsupported anti-cheat, Microsoft Store games, essential vendor controls, or unsupported older NVIDIA hardware define your gaming needs.
Bazzite is best understood as an integrated Fedora gaming platform—not magic compatibility software. With a supported machine and a Steam-focused library, it can turn a desktop or Windows handheld into a polished console-style system while keeping a conventional Linux desktop available when you need it.
