Find the complete CECH model code on the label of your PlayStation 3, including its family digits and regional suffix. Then match that exact code with Sony’s documentation. Appearance alone is unreliable, and PS2 disc playback is limited to specific models.
How do I tell which PS3 model I have?
- Locate the model label. Check the console’s rear or underside for the model name beginning with “CECH.” Sony’s model-number guide uses the CECH-4000 series as an example: find the serial and model numbers on a PS3.
- Write down the entire code. Keep the family identifier (such as CECH-2000 or CECH-4000) and the suffix (for example, A00, B00, A, or B). Do not record only “fat,” “Slim,” or “Super Slim.”
- Check Sony’s documentation for that code. Sony’s PS3 manuals index covers early CECHA00/CECHB00 systems as well as later CECH-4000 and CECH-4200 families.
- Verify the market. Suffixes and specifications can differ by region. The comparison examples below come from Sony’s Japanese-market documentation; a North American CECH-2101A/2101B manual is a separate source.
The printed CECH code is the dependable starting point for checking storage, ports, wireless networking, media-card slots and compatibility.
What is the difference between PS3 models?
Sony documents substantial hardware differences between PS3 families. The following examples are from its Japanese comparison page, so use them as family illustrations rather than a complete worldwide catalog.

Can my PS3 play PS2 games?
For PS2 disc games, Sony’s support information identifies CECH-A00 and CECH-B00 as compatible models. Sony’s page says models other than those do not play PS2 discs: PS3 support for PlayStation and PlayStation 2 game data. Do not infer compatibility from a large original “fat” enclosure; use the exact CECH code.
Later hardware can explicitly exclude the format. Sony’s CECH-2101A/CECH-2101B manual states: “This system is not compatible with and will not play PlayStation®2 format software.” Read the complete CECH-2101A/CECH-2101B manual for that North American model.
Disc playback is not the same as saves or accessories
A PS3 may handle PlayStation or PS2 save data through supported procedures without being able to run a PS2 disc. Sony documents save-data handling separately and lists a memory-card-adapter route in its accessory information. Check the instructions for the specific game, adapter and console code rather than treating save support as backwards compatibility.

Why the regional suffix matters
The same family number should not be treated as a universal specification. Sony’s comparison uses Japanese codes such as CECH-A00 and CECH-B00, while the cited North American manual covers CECH-2101A and CECH-2101B. The available documentation does not provide a complete cross-market suffix map. When buying or troubleshooting a used console, record the suffix exactly and consult documentation for the console’s region.
What should I check on a used PS3?
- Model code: Photograph the label and confirm every character, including the suffix.
- Required feature: If you need PS2 discs, verify that the code is CECH-A00 or CECH-B00 in the applicable regional documentation; do not rely on the shell shape.
- Storage: Confirm the installed HDD capacity against the exact submodel. Published capacities differ across families.
- Ports and networking: Count the USB ports and check whether the documented model includes wireless LAN or media-card slots.
- Region and condition: Confirm the market, console condition and whether the listing includes the correct power cable, controller and video cable.
- Documentation: Use Sony’s manuals and model-comparison pages, not a generic “fat,” “Slim” or “Super Slim” label.
Which accessories work with different PS3 models?
Compatibility is accessory-specific. Sony’s compatibility table lists DUALSHOCK 3 across the PS3 families shown, but other peripherals can have model or version limitations. Consult the official PS3 accessory compatibility table before purchasing an adapter or specialty peripheral.
For display output, Sony lists HDMI as an HD-output option for Blu-ray video in the compared families, so an HDMI cable is the straightforward connection for a compatible HDTV or monitor. For storage upgrades, verify the drive interface, supported capacity and installation procedure for the exact PS3 model before ordering a replacement HDD.

Label reads CECH-A00
This is one of Sony’s identified PS2-disc-compatible models. The Japanese comparison lists a 60 GB HDD, media-card slots, four USB ports, wireless LAN and SACD support.

This is also identified as PS2-disc-compatible. The comparison lists a 20 GB HDD, four USB ports and SACD support, but no media-card slots or wireless LAN.
Label reads CECH-2101A or CECH-2101B
The cited North American manual explicitly says these systems will not play PS2-format software. Their exact storage and other features should be checked against the relevant submodel documentation.

Label is incomplete or unreadable
Do not make a compatibility decision from the case design or a seller’s “backwards-compatible” description. Clean and re-photograph the label, check the underside and rear of the console, and obtain the complete CECH code before buying software or accessories.

Is every original or “fat” PS3 backward compatible?
No. Sony limits PS2 disc support to particular CECH models, including CECH-A00 and CECH-B00 in the cited support documentation.
Can I identify a PS3 model by its appearance?
Only broadly. The exact CECH label is required for reliable specifications and compatibility.

Do all PS3 models have the same number of USB ports?
No. The cited comparison lists four on CECH-A00 and CECH-B00 and two on several later families.
Does a larger HDD mean the PS3 can play PS2 discs?
