Yes, but not with a normal HDMI cable. A Chromebook may run the Android PS Remote Play app, depending on its model and ChromeOS support. For a wired picture, you need an HDMI capture card that ChromeOS and a compatible app can recognize. Neither method is guaranteed on every Chromebook.

Why a direct HDMI connection usually fails
The PS4 sends video through its HDMI out port. A Chromebook HDMI port, where fitted, generally sends the Chromebook display to a monitor or television; it does not receive another device’s signal. Connecting the two with an ordinary HDMI cable therefore normally produces no picture. Check the specifications for your exact Chromebook before assuming its port has any input capability.
Method 1: PS Remote Play
How official is Chromebook support?
Sony documents Remote Play for Windows PCs, Macs, mobile devices and Android TV, but does not list Chromebook as a separate desktop platform: Sony’s Remote Play page. The Google Play listing currently labels the Android app as supporting “laptop Chromebook” devices: PS Remote Play on Google Play. That label means the app may be offered to a Chromebook, not that every model will run it reliably. Google Play also warns that unverified devices may not work properly and that some games are incompatible.
Check the Chromebook first
- Open Settings > Apps and look for Google Play Store. Android-app support must be enabled.
- Install all available ChromeOS updates and confirm the device still receives updates.
- Check free storage, Bluetooth and USB permissions, and whether a school or employer administrator blocks apps, controllers or USB devices.
- Note whether the processor is ARM or Intel/AMD only as troubleshooting information; neither architecture is a universal compatibility rule.
- Make sure the Chromebook can use a stable Wi-Fi connection and has the ports needed for a controller.
Prepare the PS4
- Install the latest available PS4 system software.
- On the console, open Settings > Remote Play Connection Settings and enable Enable Remote Play. Sony documents this menu in the PS4 User’s Guide.
- Use the PlayStation Network account associated with the console. If Sony’s setup flow requests it, activate this console as your primary PS4.
- For remote waking, open Settings > Power Save Settings > Set Functions Available in Rest Mode. Enable Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning On PS4 from Network.
- Leave the PS4 in Rest Mode rather than fully powering it off when you plan to connect away from home. Sony’s wake-up guidance is available at Sony support.
Install and pair on ChromeOS
- Open the Chromebook Launcher, then Google Play Store.
- Search for PS Remote Play by PlayStation Mobile Inc. and install it if offered.
- Sign in with the same PSN account used on the PS4.
- Open the app and select the PS4, following its pairing prompts.
- For the first test, keep both devices on the same home network and make sure the console is awake.
- After local pairing works, test waking the PS4 from Rest Mode. Only then try another network.
The app requires current PS4 system software, a PSN account and a fast, stable connection. It can show the console screen and provide touch controls, but the Google Play listing does not guarantee behavior on every Chromebook.

Controllers: the practical test
- DUALSHOCK 4 over Bluetooth: may work, but ChromeOS and the Android app may not expose every function correctly.
- DUALSHOCK 4 over USB: worth trying when Bluetooth fails; use a data-capable cable and confirm ChromeOS detects it.
- Generic USB controller: might appear as an input device, but button mapping is not guaranteed.
- On-screen controls: useful for menus or short tests, but uncomfortable for most full console games.
- Keyboard: handy for text entry in some contexts, not a replacement for a gamepad.
Pair the controller before launching a game. Touch-pad, motion, camera and other special functions can remain unavailable even when basic buttons work.
Network and performance
- Start on the same router. If possible, connect the PS4 to the router by Ethernet and use strong 5 GHz Wi-Fi for the Chromebook; walls, distance and congestion matter more than the label alone.
- Away from home requires the PS4 to stay online and wake from Rest Mode, adequate upload capacity at home, and a stable connection at the Chromebook.
- Latency, jitter and packet loss affect control delay more than headline download speed.
- Hotel, school and coffee-shop networks may isolate devices, use captive portals or block required traffic.
- Hotspot play can consume substantial data and may incur carrier charges.

Games and features with restrictions
Remote Play is not identical to sitting at the console. Sony lists restrictions for some games and content at PS4 Remote Play restrictions. Titles requiring PlayStation Camera, PlayStation VR or other specialized peripherals may not work. Blu-ray and DVD playback, some video services, broadcasting while Remote Play is active, and other protected content can be blocked or show an error. Split-screen, motion-control and camera-dependent features may be unavailable or degraded.

If the device has passthrough, connect capture-card HDMI OUT → TV or monitor as well. The card converts the console’s HDMI signal into a USB video source; the Chromebook still needs a camera, capture, streaming or browser application that can display it.
Compatibility and latency
Hardware support is not the same as manufacturer software support. Elgato’s PS4 setup shows the console-to-capture-card arrangement at Elgato’s guide, but the HD60 X officially lists Windows and macOS, not ChromeOS. AVerMedia’s Live Gamer MINI GC311 lists HDMI input, passthrough, USB and UVC-oriented operation, yet you must still verify that your Chromebook and chosen app recognize it.

Software preview on the Chromebook can add noticeable latency. For serious play, use HDMI passthrough to a television or monitor and treat the Chromebook preview as a secondary display. A USB-C-to-USB-A adapter, HDMI cable, controller cable or powered hub may be needed, but none guarantees compatibility.
HDCP and black screens
HDCP content protection can result in a black screen, no signal or an error. Check the console and capture-card manufacturer’s instructions for ordinary gameplay capture; do not treat bypassing protection as a way to copy protected video.

Troubleshooting by symptom
The app is missing from Google Play
- Check Settings > Apps > Google Play Store and update ChromeOS.
- Confirm an administrator has not disabled Android apps or filtered the listing.
- Availability can vary by device and region. Avoid relying on old sideloaded APKs, which can create security, login and update problems.
The app installs but crashes
- Restart the Chromebook.
- Update ChromeOS and PS Remote Play.
- Clear the app’s cache or storage if appropriate, then reinstall the official listing.
- Test the PS4 on a supported Android phone or tablet to separate console/network issues from Chromebook compatibility.
- If crashes continue, stop treating the Chromebook as a dependable Remote Play client.
The PS4 is not found
- Confirm Remote Play is enabled and the PS4 is awake or correctly configured in Rest Mode.
- Use the same non-guest home network for the first test and verify the expected PSN account.
- Disable VPNs temporarily and check for guest isolation, school filters or firewall restrictions.
- Connect the PS4 by Ethernet if possible.
Connection drops or controls fail
- Test locally, move the Chromebook closer to the access point and wire the PS4.
- Disconnect unnecessary Bluetooth devices and try the controller by USB.
- Lower Remote Play quality or frame-rate settings if the app offers those controls.
- Test another device to identify whether the Chromebook, PS4 or network is responsible.
Capture-card black screen
- Check HDMI direction, cable seating and the selected USB video source.
- Test the PS4 directly on a TV.
- Check for HDCP or restricted content rather than assuming the Chromebook is defective.

Bottom line
Start with the official PS Remote Play app. If it installs, pairs on your home network and recognizes a controller, your Chromebook can be a useful portable PS4 screen. If it fails, a normal HDMI cable will not fix the problem; investigate a verified UVC capture setup only when you specifically need a wired feed, or use a supported laptop, tablet or direct display instead.
