By Holiday 2024, PlayStation 5 hardware had passed through four meaningful stages: the large 2020 launch consoles, lighter internal CFI-1100 and CFI-1200 revisions, the smaller modular 2023 family, and the performance-focused PS5 Pro released on November 7, 2024. The 2023 model changed size, storage and disc-drive flexibility; PS5 Pro raised graphics performance without creating a separate software generation.

Sony’s model groups are documented as CFI-1000 (launch family), CFI-2000/2100 (smaller family) and CFI-7000 (PS5 Pro) at PlayStation Support. A CFI number identifies a model group; it does not automatically indicate a new generation or a faster game-playing experience.
The original PS5: November 2020
Two launch configurations
Worldwide launch began on November 12, 2020, including North America. The standard PS5 cost $499.99 U.S. suggested retail price and included an Ultra HD Blu-ray drive. The PS5 Digital Edition cost $399.99 U.S. suggested retail price and had no drive. Sony’s launch specifications and pricing are in its PS5 Ultimate FAQ.

825GB is the marketed drive capacity, not the free space available after system software reserves part of the SSD. Sony also said more than 99% of the 4,000-plus PS4 games it had tested were playable on PS5, subject to individual compatibility qualifications.

The launch chassis
The original console used a large white-and-black enclosure and shipped with a base for horizontal or vertical placement. Sony’s launch documentation lists approximate dimensions, excluding projecting parts, of 390 × 104 × 260mm for the disc model and 390 × 92 × 260mm for the Digital Edition. “PS5 Fat” is common community shorthand, not Sony’s formal product name. The Digital Edition had no official add-on drive option at launch.
CFI-1100 and CFI-1200: internal revisions, not new generations
What the numbers mean
The CFI-1100 family appeared in 2021 and the CFI-1200 family in 2022. Both retained the original exterior, core PS5 software ecosystem and advertised gameplay target. Sony’s model-number guide explains where to find the CFI identifier: on the bottom of the console when it is vertical, or in Settings > System > System Software > Console Information.
What changed inside
These revisions reduced weight through internal redesign, including changes to cooling and board components reported by teardown specialists. Sony’s consumer support pages do not provide a complete engineering changelog for every board, heatsink or processor change, so detailed claims about die sizes, thermals or power should be attributed to the specific teardown or test that measured them.

- CFI-1100: substantially the same exterior and features as CFI-1000, with a lighter internal design.
- CFI-1200: another internal efficiency revision, again using the original chassis.
- Neither revision added a larger SSD, detachable disc drive or separate GPU performance tier.
- A CFI-1200 should not automatically be called faster in games than a CFI-1000 or CFI-1100.
Regional suffixes such as A or B and regional numbers are not universal global release codes. Availability and launch timing also differed by country.

The 2023 smaller PS5 design
A real consumer-facing redesign
Sony announced the new design on October 10, 2023, with retail rollout beginning in November. Sony described the new chassis as more than 30% smaller by volume, with weight reductions of approximately 18% or 24% depending on the predecessor used for comparison. It is often called “PS5 Slim,” although Sony’s announcement called it the new PS5 model.
Both versions moved to a nominal 1TB SSD. The exterior uses four cover panels, combining a glossy upper section with a matte lower section. A horizontal support is included; the vertical stand is sold separately and is compatible with all PS5 models according to Sony’s announcement at PlayStation Blog.
Modular disc-drive choices

The redesign is easier to place and offers more nominal storage, but it is not a performance upgrade over the previous standard PS5. When comparing prices, count the separately purchased vertical stand and, for the Digital Edition, the drive if physical games or 4K Blu-ray are part of the plan. A console plus drive can approach or exceed the disc model’s price depending on discounts.

Announcement, release and included hardware
Sony announced PS5 Pro on September 10, 2024. Direct PlayStation preorders opened September 26, broader retailer preorders began October 10, and release followed on November 7. The U.S. MSRP was $699.99. The package included a 2TB SSD, DualSense wireless controller and Astro’s Playroom pre-installed. It did not include a disc drive or vertical stand. What Sony says Pro changes
Compared with the current PS5, Sony claims PS5 Pro has 67% more compute units, 28% faster memory and up to 45% faster rendering. Sony also claims ray-tracing performance at roughly double, and in some cases triple, the speed of the current console. A machine-learning upscaler called PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) is intended to improve image detail, while PS5 Pro Game Boost applies to more than 8,500 backward-compatible PS4 games. Wi-Fi 7 support, VRR and 8K output are also supported where the territory, display, software and settings allow.
Those are capability claims, not guaranteed results in every game. “Up to” figures do not promise a universal frame-rate or resolution increase. Pro enhancements vary by title and may require a developer patch; Game Boost does not make every PS4 game visibly better. CPU-bound games may see little proportional frame-rate improvement.
Physical specifications
Sony’s safety documentation lists PS5 Pro at approximately 388 × 89 × 216mm, excluding projecting parts, and 3.1kg. It has a 2TB custom SSD, an AMD-based custom processor with Zen 2 CPU architecture, 16GB of GDDR6 memory plus 2GB of DDR5 system memory, and up to 390W maximum rated power in the cited regional documentation. PS5 Pro is disc-less, but it accepts the same compatible PS5 disc drive sold separately for the smaller Digital Edition. It runs PS5 games and supported PS4 games in the same broad software ecosystem; it did not create a separate generation, user interface or network service. PlayStation VR2, PlayStation Portal, DualSense Edge, Access controller, Pulse Elite and Pulse Explore remained part of the compatible accessories ecosystem.

All capacities are nominal; usable free space is lower because the operating system reserves storage. Owners can add a compatible M.2 NVMe SSD by following Sony’s requirements and installation guide at PlayStation Support.

The $399.99 and $499.99 figures are U.S. launch MSRPs from 2020. In August 2022, Sony announced price increases in selected international markets because of the global economic environment; this was not a universal U.S. price increase at that time. Regional pricing, bundles, retailer promotions and included games can change the apparent cost, so a U.S. MSRP should not be presented as a worldwide price. Which model made sense by Holiday 2024?
Lowest-cost access to PS5 games
A smaller Digital Edition offered the same basic PS5 platform with 1TB storage and the lowest entry price where retailers priced it below the disc model. Choose it only if digital purchases are acceptable, or if adding the official drive later fits the budget.
Physical games and Blu-ray
The smaller disc model combined the reduced footprint with an included drive. It suited buyers who buy, borrow or resell physical games and want 4K Blu-ray playback without adding a module later.

Existing owners who want less bulk
The 2023 model was a size, weight, storage and modularity improvement, not a reason to expect higher frame rates. Replacing a working original PS5 therefore depended on space, storage and drive preferences rather than game performance.
Enthusiasts with a suitable display
PS5 Pro made the strongest case for owners with a 4K/120Hz VRR display and games that support its enhancements. PSSR, higher-quality ray tracing and improved image modes are most useful when the display can reveal those differences.
Used-market shoppers
A CFI-1000, CFI-1100 or CFI-1200 can provide essentially the same advertised PS5 gaming experience. Check console condition, drive operation, included base, warranty status and local price instead of assuming that a higher CFI number guarantees better gameplay. Bundles can also obscure the hardware’s effective price.

How to identify a PS5 model
- Locate the label on the bottom of the console when it is positioned vertically.
- Read the identifier beginning with CFI followed by numbers and a letter.
- Alternatively, open Settings > System > System Software > Console Information.
- Use the number as a family guide: CFI-10xx is the launch family, CFI-11xx the first internal revision, CFI-12xx the later internal revision, CFI-20xx/21xx the smaller chassis family and CFI-70xx PS5 Pro.
- Treat regional suffixes and power ratings as market-specific; do not assume two similarly numbered units are interchangeable worldwide.

What changed—and what did not
- The biggest ordinary-buyer redesign was the 2023 move from the large fixed chassis to a smaller, 1TB, modular-drive family.
- The CFI-1100 and CFI-1200 were manufacturing and internal revisions, not new consumer generations.
- PS5 Pro was the major performance expansion, but it remained compatible with the existing PS5 library and accessories.
- Disc ownership, nominal storage and the cost of stands or add-on drives can matter as much as headline specifications.
- 8K output support does not mean games generally render internally at native 8K.
