Sony’s announced PS5 price increases took effect on April 14, 2025 in selected European and EMEA markets, the UK, Australia, and New Zealand. The headline increase of about 25% applied specifically to the European PS5 Digital Edition—not every PS5 model or every country. The figures below are Sony’s April 2025 recommended retail prices (RRPs), not verified August 2026 checkout prices.
Where the PS5 price increases applied
Sony announced the changes on April 13, 2025, citing a “challenging economic environment,” high inflation, and fluctuating exchange rates. The revised RRPs became effective the following day. Retailer prices could change at different times because of existing stock, promotions, taxes, bundles, and local pricing policies.

Sony also warned that other selected EMEA markets not specifically listed could receive increases. That does not mean every EMEA country adopted the same price, so buyers should check their local retailer or PlayStation Direct store where available.

Why the increase was described as “up to 25%”
The 25% figure refers to the European Digital Edition’s reported move from €399.99 to €499.99:
- Previous reported RRP: €399.99
- New announced RRP: €499.99
- Increase: €100
- Percentage increase: approximately 25%
The UK Digital Edition moved from a previously reported £389 to £429.99, an increase of £40.99, or approximately 10.5%. Comparable percentage calculations should not be assigned to Australia or New Zealand without documented previous local RRPs. The wording also should not be read as saying that every PS5 became 25% more expensive.
Which PS5 products were spared?
Standard PS5
The disc-equipped PS5’s RRP was unchanged in Europe and the UK under this announcement. It did increase in Australia and New Zealand, to AUD $829.95 and NZD $949.95 respectively.

PS5 Pro
Sony said the PS5 Pro’s RRP remained unchanged in the markets covered by the announcement. That means its recommended price was not raised in this notice; it does not guarantee that every retailer kept the same checkout price. The PS5 Pro remains a premium purchase, not a lower-cost alternative for someone simply seeking the cheapest PS5.
Standalone Disc Drive
The separately sold Disc Drive became cheaper in the four named regional currencies:

Does buying the Digital Edition plus a Disc Drive still make sense?
The lower Disc Drive RRP makes the upgrade path more attractive, but it does not automatically make it cheaper than buying the standard disc PS5. Compare the total local cost:

- Current price of the standard disc-equipped PS5
A Digital Edition is the better fit for players who buy almost everything digitally, use subscriptions, and want the lowest initial cost. Its disadvantages are the loss of physical-game resale, borrowing, used-game purchases, and Ultra HD Blu-ray playback unless the drive is added later. Digital storefront prices can also be higher than physical-retailer discounts.
The standard PS5 costs more upfront but provides physical-media flexibility immediately. Disc buyers can purchase used games, borrow or resell titles, and shop across retailers. Physical games still commonly require large downloads, patches, or online activation, so a disc does not eliminate digital requirements.

For a PS5 Pro buyer, include the cost of a separate Disc Drive if physical games or Blu-ray discs matter. An unchanged RRP is not the same as a bargain.
Was the United States affected?
The April 2025 Sony announcement did not list the United States among the affected markets. It covered selected EMEA markets, the UK, Australia, and New Zealand. That is not a permanent guarantee that US prices or promotions cannot change later; US buyers should rely on current local retailer and Sony pricing rather than this regional announcement.

- Whether the local price is an RRP or a temporary retailer price.
- Whether a console bundle includes games or accessories that change the value comparison.
- Whether the standalone Disc Drive is compatible and available.
- Whether physical games are regularly discounted in the buyer’s market.
- Whether the buyer wants used games, resale, borrowing, or Ultra HD Blu-ray playback.
- Whether the listed price is current, since the verified figures are from April 2025 and retailers may have changed them since then.

Not necessarily. Sony referred to selected European and EMEA markets. Europe is not one identical retail market, so check the local Sony store or retailer.
Were these prices permanent?
They were Sony’s revised recommended retail prices effective April 14, 2025. Retailers could discount or reprice products, and these figures should not be treated as verified current August 2026 prices.
Is a Digital Edition still worth buying?
It can be worthwhile for buyers who purchase digitally and want the lowest upfront cost. Compare the combined Digital Edition and Disc Drive price with the standard disc PS5 before deciding.
