Tom’s Guide’s live deal coverage reported the $374/$424 listings and tracked changing availability. 9to5Toys’ retailer-ad roundup reported the rounded prices, Fortnite bundles and extra-controller option. These are historical reports, not guarantees that every retailer had every version in stock throughout the event.
Cheapest option: PS5 Slim Digital Edition
At about $374–$375, the Digital Edition was the lowest-cost route to a new PS5 Slim in the reported Black Friday offers. It suited buyers who already purchased games through the PlayStation Store and did not need a disc drive. Standard console packages generally included one DualSense controller, but check the specific listing and bundle contents rather than assuming extras were included.

The lower sticker price comes with a lasting trade-off: the Digital Edition cannot play PS5 or compatible PS4 game discs. You cannot use pre-owned physical games, lend or resell disc copies, or play 4K UHD Blu-ray movies on it. Digital buyers also rely on digital-store pricing and availability. Adding the optional detachable disc drive later raises the total cost, so choose based on how you expect to acquire games—not just the sale-day price.
More flexibility: PS5 Slim Disc Edition
The Disc Edition was about $50 more than Digital at the reported sale prices. That premium buys the option to play physical PS5 and compatible PS4 discs, shop used and clearance games, lend or resell physical copies, and watch 4K UHD Blu-rays. For someone with a disc collection or a habit of buying discounted used games, those options can outweigh the initial difference. Whether they actually save money depends on the games and prices that buyer chooses.
Physical discs do not necessarily eliminate large downloads or updates; the drive’s main value is physical-game access and disc playback, not a promise of smaller installs. If you never use discs and want the smallest initial outlay, Digital is the more sensible purchase. If you are unsure whether discs will matter later, the Disc model preserves that flexibility without a later drive purchase.
Were the Fortnite Cobalt Star bundles a better deal?
Retailer-ad coverage listed the Cobalt Star Digital bundle at $375 and the Disc bundle at $425—effectively the same prices as the discounted standalone consoles in the other reports. Sony confirmed that the Fortnite Cobalt Star bundle was part of its holiday promotion at participating retailers, but did not publish a complete retailer-by-retailer price list in its announcement.

The bundle could be the better choice for an active Fortnite player who wanted its included cosmetic and in-game content. That content is not a second controller, a full standalone game, or cash with guaranteed resale value. If Fortnite extras do not matter to you, do not count them as meaningful savings; compare the exact contents and seller instead.
Where the offers appeared—and how availability changed
Sony’s stated Black Friday offer window was November 22 to December 2, 2024. Sony also cautioned that offers varied by region and retailer and were subject to availability. Retailers did not necessarily launch or maintain every listing on the same schedule.
- Best Buy: Tom’s Guide price checks recorded $374 for Digital and $424 for Disc.
- Walmart: Tom’s Guide also recorded $374 Digital and $424 Disc. Its major 2024 Black Friday event was reported as starting November 25.
- PlayStation Direct: The $374 Digital price appeared in contemporaneous price checks.
- Amazon: The Digital listing was reported sold out during part of the event, then restocked at $374. Availability changed over time.
- Target: Target advertised select PS5 console offers and Fortnite bundles, but availability varied by product and stock.
Sony’s official announcement confirms the promotional dates and offer categories, not a complete price list for every store. Retailer ads, editorial price checks and checkout availability are different kinds of evidence; a listed promotion did not mean every edition was continuously available online or in every location.

Which model made more sense?
- Choose Digital if you wanted the cheapest entry price and buy nearly all games as downloads.
- Choose Disc if you owned physical games, expected to buy used copies, valued resale or lending, or wanted 4K Blu-ray playback.
- Choose a Cobalt Star bundle if you valued the Fortnite content and confirmed the bundle was in stock at the same price as the matching console.
- Consider the extra-controller bundle if you needed two controllers from day one; its reported $475 price was advertised as a $505 value, but the stated value is not the same as a saving every buyer would realize.
The Disc model was arguably the more flexible all-purpose option, while Digital was the clear pick for minimum upfront cost. Neither is universally better. The right comparison is the $50 premium against your own physical-game use and buying habits.
What to check on a historical or archived listing
- Confirm the exact version: Digital, Disc, or a specifically named Fortnite bundle.
- Check whether the unit was new and sold by the retailer itself, rather than refurbished, used, imported or marketplace-sold.
- Read the bundle contents: Fortnite digital items, a game, and an extra controller are not interchangeable extras.
- Verify model and storage details, delivery timing or pickup availability, and the stated return policy.
- Compare the final pre-tax price plus any shipping charges; account for tax separately.
- Watch for third-party listings or accessory-only products that can appear beside console offers in search results.
In the cited 2024 coverage, $374–$375 for Digital and $424–$425 for Disc were among the lowest widely reported Black Friday prices. Tom’s Guide described $374 as the lowest it had seen for Digital at that time; that is its tracked price history, not proof of a market-wide all-time low. The roughly $75 reduction was meaningful, but inventory moved during the sale and the promotional window has long since ended.
