Sony has not announced a PlayStation 6 release date or launch window. In its May 8, 2026 investor Q&A, the company said it had made no decisions about the timing or pricing of its next-generation platforms. Sony’s official newsroom listing, checked on October 4, 2026, showed no later PS6 release-date announcement.
What Sony’s latest update actually says
Sony’s May 8, 2026 investor Q&A summary addressed memory shortages and console pricing, including next-generation platforms. Its published English summary says: “As for next-generation platforms, no decisions have been made regarding timing or pricing, and we plan to consider these matters while monitoring future conditions.”
Sony explains that higher memory prices increase component and manufacturing costs, while passing those costs on to customers could affect console adoption. The company said it would consider hardware cost reductions, sales and go-to-market strategies, and possible business-model adjustments. The English Q&A is Sony’s summary of a session held in Japanese, not a direct translation of the live discussion.
Why is the timing still undecided?
Sony identified memory costs and supply conditions as factors it was monitoring while weighing the next-generation platform’s timing and price. Its May 2026 summary said the prevailing view at the time was that memory prices would remain elevated and supply-demand conditions tight through 2027. That was a dated market assessment, not a PS6 launch forecast or a guarantee about what conditions would be later.

- Vertical Stand sold seperately
Sony also noted that it then had 125 million monthly active users on its platform, a figure it said had continued to grow. That is platform context from the May 8, 2026 Q&A; it does not establish PS6 demand, sales, or release timing.
Does the January 2028 disc announcement mean PS6 launches then?
No. On July 1, 2026, PlayStation announced that physical game-disc production for new games releasing on PlayStation consoles would end starting in January 2028. Sony said those new games would be available digitally through PlayStation Store and retailers. The policy does not affect games already released, or games that release before January 2028, in disc format.

The announcement does not give a PS6 launch date, specify which PS6 models will have a disc drive, or say that the console must launch after January 2028. The disc-policy start date and the next console’s release timing are separate matters.
