Das Redesign der PlayStation App, das Sony am 7. November 2017 ankündigte, machte Online-Freunde, ihre gespielten Titel und ihre Aktivitäten über neue Tabs am unteren Bildschirmrand schneller erreichbar. Außerdem bündelte ein zentraler PlayStation-Button Verknüpfungen zu häufig genutzten PS4-Funktionen. Das beschreibt Sonys damaliges Navigationskonzept – nicht einen nachgewiesenen Anstieg von Interaktionen oder Nutzungszeit.
Was sich in der PlayStation App 2017 änderte
Sony ordnete zentrale Bereiche in einer neuen unteren Navigationsleiste an. Die Tabs „What’s New“, „Friends“ und Profil sollten laut der Ankündigung vom 7. November 2017 den Wechsel zwischen Online-Status, aktuell gespielten Spielen und Aktivitäten von Freunden sowie der PlayStation-Community erleichtern.
Der Freunde-Tab und „What’s New“
Der Freunde-Bereich stellte Online-Freunde und die von ihnen gespielten Titel in den Vordergrund. „What’s New“ bot Zugang zu Aktivitäten und Beiträgen aus dem Freundeskreis und der Community. Sony beschrieb das Ziel als leichteres und schnelleres Wechseln zwischen diesen Ansichten; eine unabhängige Messung der Bedienbarkeit oder eine Statistik zur tatsächlichen Nutzung veröffentlichte das Unternehmen dazu nicht.
Der zentrale PlayStation-Button
Ein neuer blauer PlayStation-Button führte zu häufig genutzten Bereichen. Dazu zählten PlayStation Store, Gutscheincode-Einlösung, Events, Trophäen, PlayStation Plus sowie Listen neuer und kommender PS4-Spiele. Damit standen soziale Ansichten und praktische Schnellzugriffe nebeneinander, statt alle Funktionen in derselben Navigation zu belassen.

Welche Funktionen verlagert oder entfernt wurden
- „Live from PlayStation“: Die Funktion sollte nach dem Update nicht mehr in der PS App verfügbar sein. Spielübertragungen blieben laut Sony über das PS4-Dashboard erreichbar.
- PS4 Second Screen: Die Funktion wurde in eine separate App ausgelagert. Sony nannte als Einsatzbereiche die Navigation durch PS4-Menüs, Texteingabe über die Tastatur des Mobilgeräts und Zusatzinformationen in kompatiblen Spielen.
Die damalige Ankündigung nannte als Mindestanforderungen iOS 9.0 oder höher und Android 4.1 oder höher. Diese Angaben beziehen sich ausschließlich auf den Stand von 2017 und sind keine aktuellen Installationsanforderungen.
Das Redesign von 2017 nicht mit späteren Updates verwechseln
Die App erhielt später weitere, eigenständige Änderungen. Besonders das 2020 angekündigte Redesign war ein separater Schritt; seine Funktionen gehören nicht rückwirkend zum Umbau von 2017.

Was sich über die Wirkung des Redesigns sagen lässt
Die offiziellen Ankündigungen belegen, welche Elemente Sony hervorhob und welchen Zweck das Unternehmen ihnen zuschrieb. Sie enthalten keine Studie oder Nutzungsstatistik, die eine Veränderung bei Interaktionen, Nutzungszeit oder Zufriedenheit quantifiziert. Die Verbesserung der Auffindbarkeit ist daher als erklärtes Designziel Sonys zu verstehen, nicht als unabhängig belegter Nutzererfolg.
