As of August 18, 2026, Sony’s U.S. PlayStation status page says “All services are up and running.” The widespread incident behind the recent headlines happened on July 24, when sign-in, online play, social features, Store access and other network-dependent services failed for several hours. A green dashboard does not rule out a local, regional, account or individual-game problem, so use the date and checks below to identify which situation applies to you.
Is PlayStation Network down right now?
The official U.S. dashboard currently lists account management, gaming and social, PlayStation Video, PlayStation Store and PlayStation Direct as operational: PlayStation Network status. That result is a service-level snapshot, not a guarantee that every console has recovered. Regional routing, cached sign-in sessions, account errors, an internet provider and a game’s separate servers can all produce failures while Sony’s categories are green.

If several PSN functions fail at once, check the dashboard before changing console settings. During the July 24 recovery, some players continued to see errors after Sony began reporting restoration, because services did not return for every user at the same moment.

What happened during the July 24 PSN outage?
On Friday, July 24, 2026, reports described a widespread disruption rather than a problem confined to one game. Service returned gradually over several hours; Push Square described more than six hours of inconsistent availability before the dashboard returned to normal. GameSpot later reported that Sony had restored service.

| PSN area | What players reported |
|---|---|
| Account management and sign-in | Users could not reliably authenticate or manage accounts. |
| Gaming and social | Online multiplayer, friends lists and other social functions were unavailable or unstable. |
| PlayStation Store and downloads | Store pages, purchases and game downloads failed or loaded incompletely for some users. |
| PlayStation Video and Direct | These network-dependent Sony services were included in the outage reports. |
Recovery was uneven: one service could work while another still returned an error, and a console that had already authenticated could behave differently from one attempting a new sign-in.
Why the outage frustrated players so intensely
The incident began as the Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls multiplayer beta launched, according to GameSpot’s July 24 report. Players who had planned to join the beta encountered sign-in and multiplayer failures at the exact start of the event.
A PSN interruption also affects more than matchmaking. Store purchases, downloads, cloud features and license checks may require account authentication. That does not mean every digital game became unplayable or that ownership was lost. An installed title may launch offline when its license is cached and the console’s sharing or primary-console settings are in order; a recently downloaded game, a newly restored console, a signed-out account or a title that checks online status more often may fail instead. Disc games that support offline play are generally less dependent on PSN for their single-player launch, although their online modes still rely on game servers.

What caused the outage?
Contemporaneous coverage linked the timing to problems at Amazon Web Services (AWS). Push Square reported AWS recovery activity involving restored routes, falling error rates and timeouts, and noted that PSN recovery followed. The evidence supports describing AWS as a likely or reported contributing factor—not as a confirmed Sony explanation.
Sony’s public status updates acknowledged service problems but, in the available reporting, did not publish a detailed postmortem identifying the precise component that failed. There is no supported evidence here of a hack or data breach.
What to do if your PlayStation still cannot connect
These steps are useful when the official dashboard is normal or when you need to distinguish a home-network fault from a platform outage. They cannot repair a confirmed PSN-side failure.

- Check the official dashboard first. Use status.playstation.com and note that it is the U.S. view; availability can differ by region.
- Run the console connection test. On PS5 or PS4, open the Network settings and choose the system’s internet-connection test. Menu wording can vary with system software and language.
- Restart the console. A full restart clears a stalled local session without deleting games or account data.
- Power-cycle your modem and router. Turn both devices off, wait at least five minutes, then turn them on again, as Sony advises for connection errors at its WS-115338-1 guidance.
- Try another network as a diagnostic. A phone hotspot can show whether the home connection or ISP is involved. It may incur mobile-data charges and is not a recommended permanent gaming connection.
- Restore licenses only for ownership or license errors. On PS5, the path is Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses. Sony documents this for the CE-109258-5 license-confirmation path at its support page; it is not a cure for every network error.
- Contact PlayStation Support through the official support hub if the dashboard is green and the problem remains after these checks.
During a confirmed platform outage, do not repeatedly change your password, delete installed games, rebuild the database or factory-reset the console. Those actions generally cannot fix a server-side failure and can create avoidable account or data problems.

When the problem is not PSN
- Likely platform-wide: sign-in, friends, Store, downloads and multiple online games fail together; other internet services work; and Sony reports a degraded service.
- Likely local or ISP-related: the console cannot join home Wi-Fi, other household devices are offline, or a different network works normally.
- Likely game-specific: one title fails while the Store and other games work. That game may have its own server outage even when PSN is operating.
- Likely account-specific: only one account receives an authentication or license error, particularly after changing consoles, signing out or restoring a system.
A status dashboard can also lag behind an individual experience. It may update by service category rather than region, while DNS, routing, account systems and Store infrastructure recover at different speeds.
Will Sony compensate affected players?
No source cited for the July 24 incident establishes an automatic PlayStation Plus extension, refund or account credit. Do not assume compensation unless Sony publishes a specific announcement.
Bottom line
The major PSN disruption was July 24, 2026—not the current status shown on August 18. Sony’s U.S. dashboard reported all services running on that date. Check it before resetting hardware, separate PSN failures from a particular game’s servers, and use Sony’s network or license steps only when the evidence points to a local connection or account problem.
