PlayStation Network suffered a real, widespread disruption on July 24, 2026, affecting sign-in and several other service categories. Sony later marked its services as running again. The incident lasted several hours, but the reviewed reports do not establish an exact official start and end time or a confirmed technical cause. Sony’s status page reported all listed services running when checked on August 17, 2026; that does not rule out a separate problem affecting an individual player.

Was PlayStation Network down worldwide?

Problems were reported across multiple regions, and the disruption affected more than one isolated game or local service. That supports describing the incident as widespread or global in reach, but the available public evidence does not prove that every country, player, or service was disconnected at the same time. Some players had partial access, and reports did not necessarily peak simultaneously. Associated Press coverage described international reports; reports from players and outage trackers are useful signals of reach, not proof of universal downtime or a reliable count of everyone affected.

When did the outage happen, and how long did it last?

The incident took place on Friday, July 24, 2026. Coverage described the main disruption as lasting several hours, with service returning later that day. Reports began during the morning in U.S. time zones, but the sources cited here do not provide an official Sony timeline with precise start and end times. Access also returned unevenly: an overall service recovery did not necessarily mean every player or game was immediately working again. GameSpot’s July 24 report said Sony’s status page had returned to “All services are up and running.”

Which PlayStation services were affected?

Reports described problems across the major categories shown on Sony’s service status page. The effects varied by user; the table summarizes reported issues, not a claim that every feature failed for everyone.

What did Sony say about the cause?

Sony acknowledged that users were experiencing PSN issues and said it was working to resolve the problem and investigating the cause, according to GameSpot’s coverage. The sources cited here do not establish a confirmed root cause. Claims that the incident was caused by a cyberattack, server overload, a cloud provider, maintenance, or an update would therefore be speculation, not a verified explanation.

Is PSN back online now?

Sony’s PlayStation Service Status page listed Account Management, Gaming and Social, PlayStation Video, PlayStation Store, and PlayStation Direct as running when checked on August 17, 2026. That is the latest dated status check cited here, not a guarantee about service conditions after that date or every individual connection. A game can remain unavailable after PSN recovers because its own servers, authentication, or matchmaking are having a separate problem; an account or home-network issue can also produce similar symptoms.

How to tell a PSN outage from a local or game-specific problem

Use several clues together rather than relying on one error message. Sony’s status page is the best place to check whether Sony acknowledges a problem and which service category is affected. Independent outage reports can help show timing and regional spread, but do not prove every user is affected. If sign-in, the Store, and multiple unrelated games fail together, a platform-side incident is more plausible than a single-game outage. If only one game fails while other PSN services work, check that game’s own service status or support channel.

Check the relevant category on Sony’s status page; a generic “PSN is down” report may not identify which service is affected.
Try a second game or PSN service to see whether the problem is isolated.
Check whether another device on the same home network can connect to the internet.
Run the console’s internet connection test and note whether it fails to reach the internet or specifically to reach PlayStation Network.
Consider whether the issue affects one account only. An account restriction or sign-in problem is not the same as a platform outage.

Status pages can lag behind changing conditions, and “all services are up” does not guarantee that every existing session has recovered. Avoid treating a console error code by itself as proof that the console is defective.

What to do if your console still cannot connect

If Sony’s status page shows an outage

Wait for Sony to resolve the affected service and check its status again.
Retry after the page reports recovery; restoration can be uneven across users and services.
Do not repeatedly change your account credentials or factory-reset the console for a confirmed platform-wide failure. A local reset cannot restore Sony’s servers.

If PSN is operational but you still have a connection error

Sony’s guidance for PS5 errors WS-116486-6 and WS-115338-1 starts with checking PSN status. When PSN is active, the steps include reconnecting or resetting the console’s network settings, restarting network equipment, and trying again later. Follow the instructions for the specific error:

Check the PSN status page to confirm the relevant service is available.
Reconnect the console to the internet or reset its network settings, as appropriate to the error. Sony lists this step for PS5 error WS-116486-6 and recommends resetting PS5 network settings when PSN is active for WS-115338-1.
Turn off the router and modem, wait at least five minutes, then turn them back on. Sony specifies this wait in its guidance for both errors.
Reduce other connected-device or network-heavy activity, then retry. Sony includes reducing connected devices in its WS-116486-6 guidance.
If the problem persists while the status page shows services running, consult PlayStation Support with the error code and the results of your connection test.

Changing DNS settings without evidence of a DNS problem is not a reliable fix for a Sony-side incident. Router troubleshooting is useful only when the platform is available and the remaining problem is plausibly local.

Can you play games offline during a PSN outage?

It depends on the title and how it is licensed and designed. A single-player game may work offline if it does not require a server connection and the console can access its license and required game files. Digital games may depend on prior licensing and the console’s offline-use settings; a disc does not guarantee offline access if the game requires online authentication, a mandatory update, or server-side features. Multiplayer, cloud streaming, PlayStation Portal features, Store purchases, and other network-dependent functions require connectivity. Check the specific game’s requirements rather than assuming all digital games stop working or all disc games keep working.

Will Sony compensate PS Plus subscribers?

The public communications cited here confirm that Sony acknowledged the disruption and worked to restore service; they do not establish a compensation offer for the July 24 incident. A PS Plus extension, refund, promotional credit, or game-specific remedy should be treated as confirmed only if Sony announces it through an official channel.
