PlayStation Plus Essential now costs CAD $14.99 for one month in Canada, up from CAD $11.99. That is a CAD $3 increase, or approximately 25%, for new customers. The change took effect on May 20, 2026, while the 12-month Essential plan was reported as unchanged at CAD $109.99.
The increase does not automatically mean every PlayStation Plus tier or every existing subscriber is paying more immediately.

The one-month figure comes from the Canadian PlayStation Store listing. That page still contains older copy referring to a CAD $11.99 recurring fee, so use the displayed purchase price rather than the stale description text. Prices and the final checkout total should be confirmed on the Canadian Store before subscribing.

Sony’s broader announcement said price changes for new customers in selected regions began on May 20, 2026. Canadian reporting identified PlayStation Plus Essential as the affected Canadian plan and said the annual Essential price remained CAD $109.99 at that time.

This is a new-customer price change. It should not be read as proof that every existing Canadian subscriber was immediately moved to CAD $14.99.
Who pays the new price?
- New subscribers: The current Store price applies when they start a membership.
- Existing subscribers: They generally continue under their current billing arrangement until renewal or another subscription change, subject to Sony’s notice and subscription terms.
- Lapsed subscribers: When they restart, they may be treated as new customers and shown the current price.
- Members changing plans: Upgrades, downgrades, extensions and other changes can involve current pricing, prorated charges or time conversion.
Sony’s subscription terms say it may raise prices and will notify subscribers by email at least 60 days before an increase takes effect. The exact result for an account depends on its renewal date, status and the change being made, so do not assume that an existing subscription is permanently protected from future pricing.
Is the annual Essential plan a better deal?
For someone who expects to use Essential for a full year, yes. Twelve months at the new monthly rate would cost:
CAD $14.99 × 12 = CAD $179.88
At the reported annual price of CAD $109.99, yearly billing is approximately CAD $69.89 cheaper before any applicable taxes or promotions. The annual price is equivalent to about 7.34 months of the new monthly plan.

Monthly billing still makes sense if you only need online multiplayer occasionally, want to subscribe for a short period, or are unsure how often you will use the service. Paying annually requires more money upfront and is only a saving if you actually keep using Essential.
What does PlayStation Plus Essential include?
Essential includes:
- Online multiplayer for games that require PlayStation Plus
- Monthly games
- Exclusive PlayStation Store discounts
- Exclusive content
- Share Play
- Cloud storage
Essential does not include the larger Game Catalog, Classics Catalog or Premium game trials. Extra adds the Game Catalog and Ubisoft+ Classics. Premium adds Classics, Game Trials, cloud streaming in supported territories and other Premium features. Check Sony’s Canadian plan comparison for the current feature list, because benefits and catalog availability can change.
From January 2026, PlayStation says PS4 games will be added only intermittently to the monthly-game offering. Monthly games are not permanently yours in the usual sense: access generally depends on maintaining the required active subscription.
Do free-to-play games need PS Plus?
If you mainly play free-to-play online games, check each game’s requirements before paying for Essential. Paid games generally require an active PS Plus subscription for online multiplayer, but the requirement can vary by game. Sony’s terms also say online multiplayer generally requires PS Plus unless a game states otherwise.

Players focused on single-player games or eligible free-to-play titles may therefore get little value from an ongoing Essential subscription.
How to stop an unwanted renewal
Turn off auto-renewal before the next payment date:
- Open Settings on PS5 or PS4.
- Select Users and Accounts.
- Choose Account, then Payment and Subscriptions.
- Select Subscriptions and manage PlayStation Plus.
You can also use PlayStation Account Management on the web. Turning off auto-renewal normally preserves access through the already-paid period. It stops future payments but does not generally refund time that has already been paid for.

Sony calculates plan changes using the current value of the subscriptions and may prorate the remaining time. A downgrade generally takes effect at the end of the existing prepaid period.

Voucher time is also converted according to the account’s tier and current rules. Sony’s Canadian voucher guide gives these examples:

Those figures are conversion examples, not a guaranteed way to lock in an old price or bypass the increase. Check the Canadian voucher guide and your account’s displayed result before redeeming a code.
Which plan makes sense now?
Choose Essential if you:
- Need online multiplayer for paid games.
- Want monthly games, discounts, cloud storage and Share Play.
- Do not need a large downloadable game catalog.
- Can commit to a year and use the annual plan.
Consider Extra if you:
- Regularly download games from the Game Catalog.
- Would otherwise buy several included games separately.
- Value a broad rotating library more than owning individual titles.
Consider Premium if you specifically use:
- Cloud streaming in supported territories.
- Classics Catalog games.
- Game Trials and Premium-only features.
Premium cloud streaming requires at least 5 Mbps, or 15 Mbps for 1080p streaming, according to PlayStation’s Canadian information. Extra and Premium are not automatically better value simply because they include more features; the additional cost is worthwhile only if you regularly use them.

Bottom line for Canadian players
The confirmed headline change is the Essential monthly price: CAD $14.99 for new purchases, compared with the former CAD $11.99. The reported CAD $109.99 annual Essential plan is substantially better value for committed users. If you only need occasional online multiplayer, turn off auto-renewal and subscribe when necessary. If you mainly play single-player or eligible free-to-play games, you may not need PS Plus at all.
